Item Open Access The Acceptance and Utilization of Television in Teaching and Learning of Mathematics in Secondary Schools in Kogi State.(Department of Mass Communication, Nasarawa State University Keffi, 2010-12-12) Akaase, Ter Moses; Anum, Victoria A.This study 'The Acceptance and utilization of Television in the teaching and learning of mathematics in secondary schools in Kogi State" investigated the role of television in enhancing the teaching and learning of sciences especially mathematics in schools in the state. Survey method was used ‘ with questionnaire or the main instrument to elicit responses from the population. Analysis of data was used done using simple percentages on 516 students 464 teacher return rate of the instrument which represented 98°A> of the study sample. Findings showed 2% utilization level of television in the teaching and learning of mathematics and statistics in secondary schools in the state', the negligible percentage is even derived from NTA network programmes which are targeted not only in Kogi state. The study recommends that the state government should evolve a policy . towards statistic and other science subjects in its secondary schools by acquiring and utilizing television in the teaching and learning of subjects', this means upgrading other facilities also and providing permanent sources of electricity in the schools.Item Open Access An Analysis of Social Media Marketing In Nigeria(Department of Mass Communication, Nasarawa State University Keffi, 2019-01-05) Joshua, Damilare,; Akaase, Ter Moses; Anthony, Lorver Igyuve; K.S., AkpedeSocial media have no doubt become popular marketing instruments in the world and most businesses in Nigeria are now actively engaging platforms such as Facebook and Instagram to promote their brand, goods and services to the Nigeria publics. The purpose of this paper is to examine the concept of social media marketing and how well Nigerians have adopted the phenomena. Through a review of relevant literatures, the study identified the products that can be marketed on the social media, the edge of social media marketing over traditional media marketing, dimensions of social media marketing, benefits and challenges of social media marketing in Nigeria. The study revealed that there are evident challenges warring against social media marketing in Nigeria, salient among being poor online marketing knowhow by marketers, inconsistence, illiteracy, privacy issues and negative feedbacks. Despite these challenges however, this study concludes that social media marketing has a bright future in Nigeria, provided prompt calculated steps are taken by the government, corporate organisations, marketers and social media users to address the challenges of social media marketing in NigeriaItem Open Access AN APPRAISAL OF THE USE OF RADIO IN THE ADOPTION OF INNOVATIONS IN FADAMA III PROJECTS IN BENUE STATE(Department of Mass Communication, Nasarawa State University Keffi., 2018-02-02) Akaase, Ter Moses; Umaru, Zakari; Ahmad, Jubrin IbrahimThe paper, investigates the extent to which radio is contributing to knowledge and successful adoption of agricultural innovations by farmers involved in the Fadama Ml Project in Benue State. Survey was used to elicit information from respondents. Findings show that Benue State has been actively involved in using radio for knowledge and adoption of agricultural innovations.by % farmers especially in the Fadama III Project. Such innovations include improved variety of seeds, soil selection and application of fertilizers of various types; preservation methods, judicious distribution of crops as well as livestock farming and fish culture. The general conclusion reached by the study is that broadcasting is the appropriate channel of development communication and Benue State Radio Service is making tremendous contributions to the development of agriculture in the state. These social media platforms encourage and facilitate engagement with other citizens who participate in creating content through commenting, liking, and sharing. This practice is considered to be the 21st century version of individualized citizen journalism. It is on this regard that the paper explores the process through which Citizen Journalists using new forms of media attempt to play a role in influencing public opinion in our contemporary society (Nigeria). The paper was anchored by theories of Citizenship and Democratic Participant Media Theory ” respectively. In the paper, the concept of citizen journalism was looked upon as "all forms of public reporting that is being carried out online. Survey research method was used to carry out investigations. The paper however concludes that; Citizen Journalism plays an important role in giving individuals a platform for expression. Fadama III Project in Kogi state of Nigeria" set out to investigate the extent to which broadcasting is contributing to knowledge and successful adoption of agricultural innovations by farmers involved in the Fadama III project in the state. Survey method was used with the questionnaire/ to elicit information from respondents. Qualitative and quantitative data presentations along with chi-square statistical methods were used for data analysis. Findings showed that the state has been actively involved in using radio and television for knowledge and adoption of agricultural innovations by farmers especially in the Fadama III project. Such innovations include improved variety of seeds, soil selection and application of fertilizers/ preservation methods/ judicious distribution of crops as well as livestock farming and fish culture. Finding also showed that significant relationship exists between broadcast media and the knowledge and adoption of agricultural innovations in the state. It draws attention to complications in the issue of privacy and the need for ethical obedience when new media journalists go about gathering and disseminating news stories. The paper also touches on what constitutes the invasion of privacy and how Nigerians have/can deliberately put their right to privacy in danger. Factors that makes privacy protection challenge in the new media era were also critically examined. Peculiarity of the rural area demands specific programmes and strategies for their development and poverty alleviation enhancement. The main aim of rural communication and development is to increase the income, nutrition, health, educational and social status of the rural dwellers and poor resource farmers through improved communication system, functional infrastructural facilities and increased food production. The IC methods include town criers, folktales, songs, comic plays, oral poetry and traditional festivals. The IC system includes verbal, non-verbal and signs. The papep further explains that Nigerians consumers are now better guided when making purchase decisions owing to new media platforms such as the social media, online shopping bots, search engines, blogs, e-newspapers and phone calls/SMS which have given them a bigger voice, better information access,' more product options and the capacity to detect lies told by sales personnel about products. Issues such as the disruption of the management of the relationship between companies and the simulation for acquisition of excessive products which leads to wastage and environmental pollution were raised as new mediainjluenced consumerism problems in the discourse. The paper concludes that though the impact of new media on consumerism is undeniable, more needs to be done to fully protect consumer interest in Nigeria. The paper recommends that consumers need to yield themselves to consumer rights education even as the government, mass Media and consumer rights organisations further intensify efforts in creating more awareness on the consumerism movement. Several governments have implemented control measures including setting up special hospitals and travel restriction to mitigate its spread. Propose conceptual models for the COVID-19 outbreak in Nigeria with the consideration of individual behavioural reaction and governmental actions, such as travel restriction, stay at home, lock down, hospitalization, quarantine and others. Considering the internet as playing a leading role in providing platforms for the dissemination of health-related information. In this century, potential citizens are accessing the internet and social media applications to find and disseminate information regarding disease outbreaks and sharing their positive and negative experiences to inform societies. The study established among other things that Internet, social media, mobile phone, SMS are new ways o f communications that has been adopted and used worldwide. The study also found out that though social media helps distributing vital information as well as educating the public. Unfortunately, however, this comes with myriad misinformation. The study also seeks to explore global best techniques of evaluating the impact such community relations programmes have on the aforestated communities. In order- to prosecute this assignment therefore, a critical analysis of the above problem is done through opinion andfactual survey of residents of the host communities as well as management and staff of the company. Survey was used as the research design, while questionnaire was used as the instrument of data collection. Findings showed that Taraba Radio Service (90.7 FM) has been actively involved in the dissemination of agricultural innovations programmes; such innovations include improved variety of seeds, soil selection and application of fertilizers of various types, preservation methods, judicious distribution of crops, as well as, livestock farming and fish culture. Findings further showed that the farmers have adopted some of the farming techniques they have learnt on Taraba Radio Service (90.7 FM). Based on the findings, it was concluded that the farmers know about the agricultural innovation programmes and have adopted the techniques learnt to a great extent. It was, therefore, recommended, among others, that for higher achievements in agricultural sector through the broadcast media, there should be a policy initiative to expand the broadcast media, especially radio and integrate the other media involved in agricultural information with radio for more adoption of agricultural innovations and development in Taraba State and indeed the entire nation.Item Open Access IMPORT OF GLOBAL NEWS FLOW IMBALANCE ON NIGERIA: MEDIA STEREOTYPING AND GLOBAL PERCEPTION(Department of Mass Communication, Nasarawa State University Keffi., 2018-03-02) Musa, Balka Maina; Akaase, Ter MosesNews flow controversy is one of the inevitable problems in international communication, in the light of this, this paper examined the import of global news flow imbalance on Nigeria with reference to media stereotyping and .global perception. The paper examined the background of news flow controversy which emanated from the grievance of the third on how they are been underreported by the developed countries and even if they are reported, they are always stereotyped as; poor, hapless, and characterized by disaster and diseases. This led to the call for new world information order (NWICO). The MacBride Commission, however, noted that part of this imbalance is often branded the logical consequence of the . developed gap between the industrialized nations and the third world. The paper further identifies the implication of news flow imbalance on a Nigeria. The paper suggested that Nigeria as a nation should encourage the establishment of media channels with global reachItem Open Access INFLUENCE OF THE HEALTH BELIEF MODEL ON EXCLUSIVE BREASTFEEDING AMONG NURSING MOTHERS IN MINNA, NIGER STATE(Department of Mass Communication, Nasarawa State University Keffi, 2018-02-06) Gana, Hope; Akaase, Ter Mosesinformation sources such as healthcare personnel's or hospital attendants, family and friends, facebook, television, radio, newspaper have bee'n used as an important source of communication to nursing mothers. The study assessed the attitude of exclusive breastfeeding among nursing mothers in Minna, Niger State. The study employed the health belief model as a foundation. It equally used the survey method, using questionnaire as research instrument. The study population consisted of nursing mothers attending postnatal care and health talks in 33 health care centers. The study found out that the hospital attendants were rated the highest well known information source, while others such as facebook had the lowest rating. Television, newspaper, radio, family and friends were rated averagely. Most nursing mothers also indicated that they came across messages on exclusive breastfeeding a month and above. Findings also indicate that nursing mothers had positive attitude towards exclusive breastfeeding. Based on these findings the study recommends that other information source such as facebook, television, radio, newspaper and family and friends need to be improved upon
