Item Open Access EFFECTS OF COGNITIVE BEHAVIOUR THERAPY ON ACADEMIC ADJUSTMENT OF SENIOR SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS IN NASARAWA STATE(Department of Educational Foundations, Nasarawa State University, Keffi., 2020-06-11) Abeshi, Christiana LadiThis paper examined the effect of Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) on Academic Adjustment of Senior Secondary School students in Nasarawa State. Two research questions were generated, and two hypotheses formulated to guide the study. Descriptive survey research design was used for the study. The population is made up of39,127 students of senior secondary schools in Nasarawa State. 396 students made up the sample size; simple random sampling technique was also used. The instrument for data collection was designed by the researcher titled Cognitive Behaviour Therapy and Academic Adjustment Scale (CBTAAS). The instrument was validated by experts in the counseling and psychology. With the use of split half measure, a reliability coefficient of 0.83 was realized for the instrument. Mean and standard deviation was used to answer the research questions, and chi-square goodness of fit was used to test the hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance. Findings of the study revealed that CBT had significant effect on motivation and academic adjustment of students in Nasarawa State. It was recommended that the application of CBT should be used in developing academic adjustment of students.Item Open Access GENDER DISCRIMINATION AND ATTITUDE OF WOMEN TOWARDS POLITICAL PARTICIPATION IN NASARAWA(Department of Educational Foundations, Nasarawa State University, Keffi., 2016-10-16) Abeshi, Christiana LadiThis paper investigates gender discrimination and political participation of women for development in Nasarawa State. This descriptive research design has emphasis on survey approach. The population for the study comprised of all women in three senatorial zones of Nasarawa State, out of which 600 women were randomly selected from the three senatorial zones in the State. One research question and three hypotheses were postulated to guide the study. A questionnaire was administered to gather relevant data. Mean and standard deviation were used to answer research questions while hypotheses were tested using t-test and analysis of variance. The findings show that, Nigerian women have a negative attitude towards political participation due to obstacles that undermine women's participation in politics. As a result; gender, religion and age of women were found to have a significant influence on women discrimination towards political participation in Nasarawa State. Specific indices covered were study habits and attitude to school and academic performance of senior secondary school students. Two hypotheses were formulated. A descriptive survey design was employed. The sample size for the study was three hundred and eightyeight (388) senior secondary schools students. The study also employed chi-square statistics in analysing the data at 0.05 level of significance. Findings revealed that there was significant impact of counseling on the secondary school students' study habits and attitude towards school. As Good mental healthItem Open Access INFLUENCE OF COUNSELLING ON PARENTS OF SPECIAL NEEDS CHILDREN WITH LEARNING DISABILITIES AND AUTISM IN NASARAWA STATE.(Department of Educational Foundations, Nasarawa State University, Keffi., 2016-09-17) Abeshi, Christiana LadiThe paper examines the influence of counselling on parents of special needs children with learning disabilities and autism in Nasarawa state. The variable under used were psychological feeling, economic demand and social aspect. Three research hypotheses were formulated to guide the study. Ex-post facto research designed was adopted. The population of the study comprises all parents with children with learning disabilities across the three senatorial zones of Nasarawa state all of primary four children with learning disabilities and autism, about fifty of them. The sampling size was manageable based on the population instruments for data collection was questionnaire, it was adopted from Fitz Patrick and Ritchie. Tire research hypothesis guided the experts in validating the instruments. To determine reliability Cronbach Alpha of 0.85 was obtained. The result indicated that there is a significant influence of counseling on psychological feelings, economic demand and social aspect of parents of special needs children. It was recommended that parents should be sensitive, and counseling to have an unbiased attitude towards children with learning disabilities.Item Open Access INFLUENCE OF FARMER-HERDER CONFLICT AND EMOTIONAL BEHAVIOUR ON ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT OF JUNIOR SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS IN BENUE STATE, NIGERIA(Department of Educational Foundations, Nasarawa State University, Keffi., 2022-11-29) Abeshi, Christiana Ladi; Haruna, Iya AyubaThe study investigated the influence of farmer-herder conflict and emotional behaviour on the academic achievement of Junior Secondary School Students in Benue State. Three research questions were answered, while three hypotheses were tested at 0.05 level of significance. A descriptive survey research design was adopted. The population of the study was 15433 and the sample was 377students (male andfemale). Multi-stage sampling techniques were used to draw up the sample for the study. Three instruments were used to collect data, a questionnaire developed by the researcher and an Achievement test in Mathematics and English. The validity index for the questionnaires is 0.86, 0.85 and 0.83: for the achievement test instrument, Mathematics and English respectively. The reliability index for the questionnaires was 0.82 while that of mathematics was 0.87 and English Language was 0.79 for the achievement test. Descriptive statistics of Mean and Standard deviation were used to answer the research questions while Chi-square was used to test hypotheses 1-3 at 0.05 level of significance. The findings of this study revealed that aggression, depression and anxiety influence the academic achievement of Junior Secondary School students in Benue State. Hence, it was recommended, among others, that government should, as a matter of urgency, constitute a fora for all parties involved to profer a lasting solution to the conflicts between herdsmen and farmers.Item Open Access INFLUENCE OF HAWKING ON ACADEMIC ADJUSTMENT OF PRIMARY SCHOOL CHILDREN IN WESTERN SENATORIAL DISTRICT OF NASARAWA STATE, NIGERIA(Department of Educational Foundations, Nasarawa State University, Keffi., 2022-01-15) Abeshi, Christiana Ladi; Haruna, Iya AyubaThe paper examined the influence of hawking on academic adjustment of primary school children in Western Senatorial Zone of Nasarawa State, Nigeria. Descriptive survey design was adopted. The population of the study was 6500 children. A sample size of 388 primary school children who hawk were selected using accidental sampling techniques. The instrument used for data collection was researcher developed questionnaire titled Influence of hawking on the academic and social adjustment of primary school children (HACSAQ) with 15 items. The instrument were validated by three experts in the Faculty of Education, Guidance and Counseling Unit. The instrument yielded a reliability coefficient of 0.78 after analysis. Three research questions were generated and three hypotheses were formulated. The researcher used mean and standard deviation in answering the research questions and chi-square of goodness offit was used in testing the hypothesis at 0.05 level of significance. The findings, revealed that hawking has a significant influence on absenteeism, aggression and truancy of primary schools' children. Based on the result of the study, it was concluded that, hawking has a significant influence on primary schools' children absenteeism, aggression and truancy. Therefore. they need counseling to help them out of their academic and social problems. Based on the findings, it was recommended that schools counselor should assist primary school children to understand the consequences of absenteeismItem Open Access INFLUENCE OF PARENTAL SOCIO-ECONOMIC STATUS ON EMOTIONAL ADJUSTMENT OF SENIOR SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS IN NASARAWA STATE(Department of Educational Foundations, Nasarawa State University, Keffi., 2019-09-28) Abeshi, Christiana LadiThis study investigated the influence of parent’s socio-economic background on emotional adjustment of senior secondary school students in Nasarawa State. The variables under study are parents’ educational level, parents’ income level and occupational status. In doing this, three research questions were structured to guide the study. Also, three hypotheses were formulated to be tested at 0.05 level of significance. The study adopted a descriptive survey design which is aimed at examining the influence of parent’s socio-economic background on emotional adjustment of secondary school students in Nasarawa State. The population of this study covers sixty five thousand students (65,000). The sample size was 376 students. In undertaking the study, the researcher made use of structured questionnaire. The questionnaire which has 15 items was constructed to elicit responses from the respondents. The validity and reliability was high enough for this study. The data obtained from the study was analyzed using tables, percentages, mean scores and standard deviation were used to answer the research questions while chi-square statistics were used to test the hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance. The finding revealed that parents’ educational level, income level and occupational status have significant influence on emotional adjustment of students. The study recommended that with parental educational level, income level, and occupational status having a significant influence on the emotional adjustment of secondary school students, the government should at least provide free education to citizens and make adult education more pronounced and provide jobs to parents to help them have income to cater for their children’s educational needs that will give positive emotional adjustment.Item Open Access INFLUENCE OF TETFUND ON THE PROVISION OF INFRASTRUCTURAL FACILITIES IN NASARAWA STATE UNIVERSITY, KEFFI, NIGERIA(Department of Educational Foundations, Nasarawa State University, Keffi., 2021-07-30) Abeshi, Christiana Ladi; Haruna, Iya AyubaThis study investigated the influence of TETFUND on the provision of infrastructural facilities in Nasarawa State University, Keffi, Nigeria. Descriptive survey research design was adopted. The population of study comprised 21,451 students from Nasarawa State University, Keffi. The sample this study made up of 300 students from seven faculties of the Nasarawa State University, Keffi. The study employed simple random sampling technique for the selection of sample size. The The obtained data were analyzed using Cronbach Alpha correlation coefficient which yielded a co-efficient of 0.84. The collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistics of mean and standard deviation to answer the research questions. The chi-square was used to test of the hypothesis at 0.05 level of significance. Finding from the study revealed that TETfund has significant influence on the provision of lecture halls in Nasarawa State University Keffi with the recommendation that TETFund and school management should provide enough computer/lCT facilities in Nasarawa State University.Item Open Access MENTAL HEALTH EDUCATION ON REDUCING STIGMA AMONG UNIVERSITY STUDENTS’ SEEKING COUNSELLING IN NASARAWA STATE, NIGERIA(Department of Educational Foundations, Nasarawa State University, Keffi., 2019-02-20) Abeshi, Christiana LadiThe study was designed to assess mental health education on reducing stigma of university students towards seeking counselling in Nasarawa State, Nigeria. Two research questions guided the study and two hypotheses were formulated and tested at 0.05 level of significance. The study employed descriptive survey research design. A total of 1520 students of Nasarawa State University serve as target population comprised Faculties of Law, Education, Social Sciences, Arts, Administration, Environmental and Natural and Applied Science. The simple random sampling technique of balloting without replacement was used to select 150 second year students as 10% of the population based on Krejcie Morgan (1970). An adapted instrument, assessing mental health towards seeking counselling (AMITSE) was used to solicit information from the respondents. The instruments were validated and logical validity indices were 0.83 and 0.79 with internal consistency reliability of 0.87 and 0.89. Chi-square statistic was used for the analysis. The results showed that mental health education had significant stigma reduction among students seeking counseling, implication of the findings include providing support for mental health programmes directly targeting stigma towards seeking counseling. Recommendations centered on the need for counselors to teach cognitive behavioural strategies to university students to help them to know how to manage stigma and discrimination.Item Open Access PERCEPTION OF COUNSELLORS ON THE MANAGEMENT OF STUDENTS’ ATTITUDE ON COMPUTER BASED TEST TOWARDS COVID-I9 PANDEMIC IN NASARAWA STATE, NIGERIA(Department of Educational Foundations, Nasarawa State University, Keffi., 2020-02-20) Abeshi, Christiana Ladi; Allahnana, Kwanza MaikudiIn this 21st century, Coronavirus (COVID-I9) pandemic has impacted and changed lives on a global scale since its emergence and spread from China in late 2019. It has caused millions of infections, and thousands of deaths worldwide. However, the control of this pandemic still remains unachievable in many African countries including Nigeria, despite the application of some strict preventive and control measures. Therefore, this study assessed the perception of counsellors on the management of secondary school students’ attitude on Computer Based-test towards COVID-19 pandemic in Nasarawa West Senatorial Zone of Nasarawa State, Nigeria. Descriptive survey research design adopted in this stud)>. The target population of this study comprises 24,403 senior secondary school students from 86 senior secondary schools in Nasarawa West Senatorial Zone. The population constitutes 15,953 male and 8,450 female students. The sample of the study comprised 1315 senior secondary school students from 20 senior secondary schools. The sample was made up of 748 male and 528female students using stratified random sampling techniques was employed. The instrument for the data collection consists of 5-Point Likert scale type of Strongly Agree, Agree, Undecided, Disagree, Strongly Disagree. The questionnaire developed by the researchers to elicit information on how councilors feel and perceived about students ’ attitude on Computer based test towards COVID-19 pandemic. The instrument is called Computer Based-Test and Students Attitude on COVID-19 Questionnaire (CBTSACO) which have 40 items. Construct validity was used to established validity index of 0.86 while Cronbach 's alpha was used to established reliability index of 0.89. Data generated from this study converted into numerical data and descriptive statistics of means and standard deviations were used to answer research questions while inferential statistics of Chi-square (x2) was used to test the formulated hypotheses at 0.05 level of significant using SPSS version 23. Findings from the study revealed that some of the students' have negative attitude while some exhibit positive during computer based test toward COVID-19 pandemic. It was recommended that government should improve the level of technological awareness and utilization of computer based test at the secondary schools’ education for both the teachers and the students and more COVID-19 machineries need to be provide and teachers should encourage male and female students 'to exhibit positive attitude towards computer based test and COVID-19 pandemic for safety.Item Open Access RELATIONSHIP OF COGNITIVE, CULTURAL VARIABLES AND ATTITUDE OF UNIVERSITY STUDENTS TOWARDS ENTREPRENEURSHIP EDUCATION IN NASARAWA STATE UNIVERSITY, KEFFI(Department of Educational Foundations, Nasarawa State University, Keffi., 2018-09-04) Abeshi, Christiana Ladi; Jerry, JummaiThis study examined the relationship of cognitive and cultural variables and attitudes of university students towards entrepreneurship education in Nasarawa State University Keffi. The study focused on variables such as self-efficacy creativity value orientation, beliefs and moral belief Three research questions were generated and three null hypotheses were also formulated. Correlation research design was used. The population of the study was 104,953 students and a sample size of 400 university students were selected using Research Advisor (2006) statistical table for determining sample size. The researcher developed questionnaire for data collection titled Cognitive and Cultural Variables and Entrepreneurship Education Questionnaire (CCVEEQ). To determine the validity of the instrument, it was subjected to critical appraisal by experts. To ascertain the reliability of the instrument a reliability Test was conducted using Chronbach alpha, a reliability coefficient 0.85 was generated. Data were collected and analyzed using mean and standard deviation to answer the research questions and Pearson product moment correlation to test the hypotheses at 0.085 level of significance. The major findings were that cultural beliefs, self efficacy and value orientation have significant relationship on attitude of university Students towards entrepreneurship education. Based on the findings, it was recommended that psychologists and guidance counsellors should assist students to adjust their level of thinking so as to be greater performers at entrepreneurial classes. Three research questions and three research hypotheses guided and tested the study. The descriptive survey design was adopted for the study. The population of the study comprised 2980 teachers. 298 teachers from 24 selected secondary schools constituted the sample of the study. A 14-item structured questionnaire constructed by the researchers title Teachers' Motivation and the Administration of Secondary Schools Questionnaire (TMASSO) was used for data collection. Descriptive statistics of mean and standard deviations were used in answering the research questions while the chi-square (x2) test of goodness off it was used to test the hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance. The findings revealed that influence of teachers' in-service training and influence of teachers' participation in decision making significantly influenced the administration of secondary schools in a globally depressed economy. Based on the findings of the study, it was recommended among others that school administrators should from time to time send their teachers for in-service training so as to increase their knowledge and skills which will make them perform better in their schools. In addition, appropriate school authorities should try to can't their teachers along by involving them in the decision making process of schools.Item Open Access WOMEN EMPOWERMENT THROUGH FUNCTIONAL EDUCATION AND ENTREPRENEURIAL TRAINING PROGRAMMES IN NIGERIA(Department of Educational Foundations, Nasarawa State University, Keffi., 2022-02-14) Abeshi, Christiana LadiThe aim of this paper was to identify the strategies that will be effective in empowering women through the provision of entrepreneurship education and training. In spite of the tremendous role women play in the society, their educational neglect has made it difficult for them to realize their potentials. This paper subscribes to the view that the provision of appropriate entrepreneurship education and training will enhance the women’s earning power and improve the family welfare. Three research questions were formulated for the study. 240 women who are participating in Adult Basic Education (ABE) Programmes in Nasarawa State were sampled from Lafia metropolis Akwanga and keffi for investigation. Utilizing the focused group discussion technique, the subjects through the semi-structured questionnaire, indicated their demographic characteristics, perception of the ABE programme and their preferred entrepreneurial skills. Using frequencies and percentages, majority of the women are young, single, unemployed and had dropped out of school. They perceived the current ABE curriculum as indicative. Majority of them desired training in Home management, Clothing and Textile skills. Many of these who are in the rural areas prefer training in Agricultural production to other vocation
