SOCIAL STUDIES EDUCATION AS A TOOL FOR SELF-RELIANCE IN CONTEMPORARY NIGERIAN SOCIETY

This paper examines the concept and functions of education. It also discusses the concept of self-reliance and how to be self-reliant. The paper observes that social studies have a vital role in the lives of individual in the society. In addition the paper examines the nature of social studies and its aspects considered as an instrument * for self-reliance. Among these instruments are skills, values and attitudes. The paper further examines social studies Education for self-reliance in Nigeria. In addition, the paper highlights the strategies and challenges of teaching and learning social studies.
