dc.description.abstractThis paper examines the concept and functions of education. It also discusses the concept of self-reliance and how to be self-reliant. The paper observes that social studies have a vital role in the lives of individual in the society. In addition the paper examines the nature of social studies and its aspects considered as an instrument * for self-reliance. Among these instruments are skills, values and attitudes. The paper further examines social studies Education for self-reliance in Nigeria. In addition, the paper highlights the strategies and challenges of teaching and learning social studies. The paper concludes that with the aid of social studies education society will change for better.en_US
