Abstract

This paper examined the effect of Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) on Academic Adjustment of Senior Secondary School students in Nasarawa State. Two research questions were generated, and two hypotheses formulated to guide the study. Descriptive survey research design was used for the study. The population is made up of39,127 students of senior secondary schools in Nasarawa State. 396 students made up the sample size; simple random sampling technique was also used. The instrument for data collection was designed by the researcher titled Cognitive Behaviour Therapy and Academic Adjustment Scale (CBTAAS). The instrument was validated by experts in the counseling and psychology. With the use of split half measure, a reliability coefficient of 0.83 was realized for the instrument. Mean and standard deviation was used to answer the research questions, and chi-square goodness of fit was used to test the hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance. Findings of the study revealed that CBT had significant effect on motivation and academic adjustment of students in Nasarawa State. It was recommended that the application of CBT should be used in developing academic adjustment of students.
