The research gave some background understanding on the effect of conference, workshop attendance and study fellowship provision on staff Purposive sampling technique was used to select 36 respondents from the population of 40 academic librarians in Kaduna State university library Kaduna .The response rate showed that 36 copies was filled and returned in useable form The result shows that the both universities provides conference, workshop attendance and study fellowship to library staff to improve their skills and knowledge thereby impacting it on , , library services. The study further reveals suggestions on how to improve conference, workshop attendance and study fellowship provision in Kaduna State university library Kaduna State.Item Open Access APPLICATION OF MOBILE TECHNOLOGY TO ENHANCE SELECTIVE DISSEMINATION OF INFORMATION (SDI) IN NASARAWA STATE UNIVERSITY LIBRARY(Department of Library and Information Sciences, Nasarawa State University Keffi, 2019-09-18) Mohammed, Abubakar Abdullahi; Maifata, Mu'azu Nurudeen; Mohammed, ShehuThe focus of this paper is on the use of mobile technology in the provision of effective selective dissemination of information in Nasarawa State University library, Keffi. Preliminary investigations revealed uncertainty on the rate of use of mobile technology in providing SDI in the university's library neither is there a comprehensive database captured for such purpose. As a result, this research is aimed at studying the level of awareness the provision of SDI has attained in the university, the presence of mobile technology infrastructure put in place, hindrances to provision of this service via mobile technology and necessary steps to curb the stated hindrances and challenges. The target population are the academic staff and librarians who were administered questionnaires and interviewed respectively. A total of 200 copies of questionnaires was administered; 189 copies were returned and found usable. The collected data was analyzed and presented using simple percentages and frequency counts. Majority of the respondents were male across different ranks in the academic cadre and two librarians. Findings revealed that lack of constant internet data bundle and mobile access to emails hinders effective access to SDI on the part of researchers; while lack of standard policy for SDI provision, bureaucratic processes for considering submitted reports as well as funding of internal projects and network downtime count on the part of the university library. The study recommended that there should be improved SDI awareness among lecturers through HOD’s and Deans of faculties especially during board meetings, and adopting an automated SDI system supported with a clear-cut policy for SDI provision in the universityItem Open Access INFLUENCE OF TRADITIONAL INFORMATION COMMUNICATION IN CONFLICT RESOLUTION AMONG BASSA AND EGBURA ETHNIC GROUPS IN TOTO LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF NASARAWA STATE, NIGERIA(Department of Library and Information Sciences, Nasarawa State University Keffi, 2020-08-17) Adamu, Yahaya; Maifata, Mu'azu Nurudeen; Ibrahim, Idi AhmadThis study investigated the influence of traditional information communication in conflict resolution among Bassa and Egbura in Toto IGA of Nasarawa State Nigeria. The study adopted a survey research design and questionnaires were used as an instrument for data collection. The population of the study was made up of the Bassa and Egbura communities in Toto LGA. However, 398 members of the communities were selected as sample for the study; two objective and one hypothesis were formulated and tested. Descriptive statistics were used to analyses the data collected. The study established, among other things that power struggle, political exclusion, and non-compliance with rules and policies of the land. Others are lack of information, dominion and oppression, exploitation and unjust violation of human right. The study also discovered that non-tolerance, victimisation, discrimination, among others are the of ethnic conflicts between the Bassa and Egbura communities. The study recommends power shaiing, equal disti ibution ofiesources, provision of social amenities and infrastructures, information sharing, dialogue, hearing and respecting the views of others, open-mindedness, inter-ethnic interactions, use of town crier, social media, radio, and newspaper should be employed to avoid conflict between the affected communities. causesItem Open Access INFORMATION RESOURCES FOR VISUALLY IMPAIRED STUDENT FOR EFFECTIVE SERVICE DELIVERY IN AHMADU BELLO UNIVERSITY ZARIA, NIGERIA(Department of Library and Information Sciences, Nasarawa State University Keffi, 2024-06-09) Maifata, Mu'azu Nurudeen; Alhaji, Yusuf Mohammed; Abdullahi, Mohammed AbubakarIntroduction: This study investigated the information resources available for visually impaired students to ensure effective service delivery at Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) library, Zaria, Kaduna State, Nigeria. The study aimed to determine the necessary information resources for visually impaired students, identify sources for providing these resources, explore challenges associated with their provision, and find strategies for enhancing resource availability for visually impaired students at ABU, Zaria. Methodology: A descriptive survey research design was employed. The study population comprised 90 students and librarians from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria. Data collection instruments included interviews and questionnaires. Two research assistants, briefed on the study objectives, helped administer and retrieve the instruments within two weeks. Data were analyzed using percentages, means, and standard delations to answer the research questions. Findings/Results: The study revealed that university libraries should utilize specialized software and hardware designed to aid visually impaired students in accessing printed materials. These tools include screen readers, text-to-speech software, and braille displays, which ensure equal access to resources. The study also identified the challenges faced in providing these resources and the need for effective strategies to overcome them. Conclusion: The study concluded that while specialized information resources are essential for visually impaired students at ABU, Zaria, there are significant challenges in their provision. Addressing these challenges is crucial for ensuring effective service delivery and equal access to resources for visually impaired students. Recommendations: The study recommended that university libraries should implement and maintain specialized software and hardware for visually impaired students. This includes investing in screen readers, text-to-speech software, and braille displays. The study adopted survey research design and the population of the study consisted of 172 librarians from the three selected federal university libraries in North West, Nigeria. There was no sampling technique involved in the study because the researcher is interested in the total population; therefore total census method was adopted in the study. Questionnaire was used as the research instalment for collecting data in this study. The data collected was analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency distribution, percentages, mean and standard deviation. Findings reveal that the types of software used in digital information resources in the selected federal university libraries are Q- space, Integrated libraries software, LOCKSS, Fedora and E-print, D-space, LOCKSS, Fedora and E-print are highly utilized software for digital preservation in the selected federal university libraries and Erective power supply, lack of technical know-how, problem of retrieved of record being downloading, ICT are slow inadequate, Life span of physical media where the information is store and weak internet connectivity are the Challenge in the preservation and utilization of Digital Information Resources in the selected federal university libraries. The study concluded the selected federal university libraries have adopted a range of sophisticated software systems, including DSpace, Integrated Library Systems (ILS), LOCKSS, Fedora, and EPrints, to support their digitization and digital preservation efforts. Among these, DSpace, LOCKSS, Fedora, and EPrints are highly utilized for their robust capabilities in managing and preserving digital content. However, the effectiveness of these software systems is significantly challenged by several factors such as erratic power supply among others. Bibliotherapy is the technique of healing through reading, and it refers to the therapeutic process in which the client uses books and educational materials to enhance their mental health. This paper discussed the importance of bibliotherapy application in library and information services and reveals the effectiveness of Bibliotherapy to library customers with mental disorders. Research indicates that Bibliotherapy effectively treats various pathological symptoms that prevail in major depressive disorders, anxiety disorders, grief, and frauma. This study- shows the relevance of bibliotherapy skills in attending to customers with a mental disorder in the University Library environment and provides Librarians with an effective and efficient mechanism to implement the approach.Item Open Access USERS’ SATISFACTION WITH LIBRARY AND INFORMATION RESOURCES AT ISA MUSTAPHA AGWAI 1 POLYTECHNIC, LAFIA, NASARAWA STATE, NIGERIA(Department of Library and Information Science, Nasarawa State University Keffi, 2024-01-12) Mustapha, Hussaini Yusuf; Maifata, Mu'azu Nurudeen; Sani, Suleiman AdamuThis paper examines the library information resources available, and users' satisfaction with information resources at IMAP Library. A questionnaire was used as instrument for data collection. A Survey research design was adopted for the study and three hundred and forty-six (346), registered academic staff and students users were used as target population. While the sample size for the study was one hundred and eighty (180) uses drawn from the target population. To determine the sample size for the study, the researchers made use of Krejcie, and Morgan determining sample size of the study. Thus, 180 copies of questionnaire were distributed to respondent and response rate recorded was 145(80.55%) which was used for data analysis. Questionnaire were used for data collection and statistical package for social sciences (SPSS) was used to analyze the data. Mean and frequency counts were chosen as metrics to measure the responses. The study revealed that majority respondents (147.98.0%) are satisfied with the available resources in library. The respondents (79.52.7%) are very satisfied with the resources in Imap Library resources. This implies that user-satisfaction with resources in libraries as well- stocked materials are well arranged and managed by qualified experienced staff. Findings of this study revealed that users' satisfaction is a function of the quality of resource of a library. Finally, the study recommends that: The feedback of the users is to be considered in the process of library collection developments and to be collected periodically. Computers with a high-speed internet connection, new modern versions systems are to be supplied in the library. The study sought to find out the role of digital libraries in fostering information literacy in Federal University Library Gashua and determine the challenges affecting digital libraries for enhancing information literacy in Federal University Library, Gashua. A descriptive survey research design was adopted for the study. The entire population of the study was 24 librarians from Federal University library Gashua. The questionnaire contained 18 items/ statements. The responses of the librarians were used to answer the research questions. The instrument was structured on 4-point scale. The instruments were face- validated by three experts, two from the Department of Library and Information Science and one from Measurement and Evaluation Unit, Faculty of Education, Federal University, Gashua. Data was collected with the help of two research assistants while the instrument was administered and retrieved within two weeks. The return rate of the administered questionnaire was 100%. Data collected was analyzed using percentages, means and standard deviation to answer the research questions. The findings of the study revealed that contribution to the development of critical thinking skills and information literacy in the digital age, supporting users in navigating and evaluating digital resources among others are the role of digital libraries in fostering information literacy in Federal University Library Gashua. The study concluded and recommended among others that the UniversityItem Open Access EFFECTS OF THE USE OF LIBRARY RESOURCES AS CORRELATES OF INMATES REFORMATION IN CORRECTIONAL CENTRES OF NORTH-CENTRAL ZONE, NIGERIA(Department of Library and Information Sciences, Nasarawa State University Keffi, 2023-09-17) Ahmed, Yusuf; Maifata, Mu'azu Nurudeen; Isha, Rakiyahis paper assessed the Availability and Use of Library Resources as Correlates of Inmates Reformation in Correctional Centres of North-Central, Nigeria. The study was guided by three objectives and three corresponding research questions. Survey research design method was adopted for the study. The total population for the study was four thousand and ninety (4,090) Inmates and correctional Staff in six correctional centres studied. The sample size of the population was one thousand one hundred and fifty nine (1,159) respondents, which adopted purposive sampling technique for determining the sample size of the population. Questionnaire was the instruments used for data collection. Out of one thousand one hundred and fifty nine (1,159) copies of questionnaire administered, one thousand and sixty three (1,063) copies were filled, returned and used for the analysis. Descriptive statistical tool involving frequency counts and percentages, mean and standard deviation were used to analyse the data. The findings of the study revealed that reading from library resources heals the trauma and worries of inmates, it redefines their career and develop the idea of positive relationship after jail. The study further revealed that there are lack of effective provision and use of library resources, inadequate funding, space/accommodation problem, inadequate resources and out-dated library materials, lack of professional Librarians to Mann the library were among other issues. The objectives of the study include, to find out the impact of data privacy and information security in digital library. To determine the challenges affecting data privacy and information security in digital library. To determine the measures for enhancing the impact of data privacy and information security in digital library. Three research questions were formulated in line with the specific objectives that guided the study. A descriptive survey research design was used for the study. The entire population of the study was 15 librarians from Federal polytechnic library, Kaduna. Data was collected with the help of two briefed research assistance using questionnaire, the instrument was administered and retrieved within two weeks with a return rate of 100%. The data collected was analyzed using simple percentages, means and standard deviation to answer the research questions. The finding of the study shows that safeguarding of data privacy and information security is essential for faster trust among users. The finding of the study also shows that there is a lack of robust data protection policies and frameworks specific to digital libraries in Nigeria. Finally, the finding of this study highlights the significance of implementing robust technical and organizational measures to ensure data protection and secure information systems within digital libraries. As the field of LIS evolves and embraces a more entrepreneurial mindset, it is essential to equip students with the necessary skills and knowledge to thrive in an increasingly competitive and dynamic information landscape. This study identifies various teaching and learning facilities that can effectively cultivate entrepreneurial competence among LIS students. The study identifies several key factors that contribute to the development of entrepreneurial competence in LIS students, including practical hands-on experiences, access to cutting- edge technology, mentorship programs, interdisciplinary collaboration, and experiential learning opportunities. These factors enable students to acquire critical skills such as innovation, problem-solving, business acumen, and adaptability. Moreover, the study highlights the role of university libraries as ideal platforms for providing these teaching and learning facilities. University libraries can serve as innovation hubs, offering spaces for entrepreneurial activities, access to emerging technologies, and resources that support the development of entrepreneurial projects. Collaborations between LIS faculty, library professionals, and industry experts play a vital role in shaping the curriculum, designing entrepreneurship programs, and providing mentorship to students. The study also emphasizes the importance of integrating entrepreneurial education within the LIS curriculum, ensuring that students are exposed to business concepts, market analysis, intellectual property, and marketing strategies. It further stressed that social media platforms have created a good forum to facilitate effective two-way Communication and increases library users and usage. Librarians and information professionals using social media stands to promote library and information services. Some challenges of perfecting social media services such as too many social media tools to learn; low interest of librarians in learning and utilizing social media; technology phobia; lack of privacy and identity theft; confidentiality of information; inadequate finding for libraries; and electricity failure were observed. Six research questions were answered. The population for this study was 89 subjects comprising all staff both Professionals and Para-professional from University of Agriculture Makurdi library. There was no sampling for the study. The entire population of 89 was used for the study as sample. Findings of the study revealed types of grey Literature provided, processes of selecting grey literature, methods of acquisition of grey literature, methods of processing of grey literature, extent to which grey literature and the strategies for improving on the selection and acquisition of grey literature in Francis Sulemanu Idachaba Library University of Agriculture Makurdi. The study concluded that there are strategies could be adopted for improving the selection and acquisition of grey literature. It was recommended that the government should make provision for adequate funds for acquisition of grey literature, University management should embark on regular review and supply of new grey materials, regular review and supply of new grey materials the library and creation of proper awareness to both teachers and students on the role of grey literature.Item Open Access Factors Influencing the Utilization of Library Resources Among Primary School Teachers in Sabon Gari Local Government Area of Kaduna State(Library and Information Science Department, Nasarawa State University, Keffi, 2018-10-01) Ridwan, Sani MurtalaThis study examined the factors influencing the utilization of library resources among primary school teachers in Sabon Gari Local Government Area of Kaduna State, three research objectives were formulated: the available library resources in primary schools, the factors responsible for the high/low use of libraries by teachers in primary schools, and the influence of quality of library resources to primary schools ’ teachers in Sabon Gari Local Government to ■ utilize the library. Quantitative research method was used, survey design was adopted, the target population for this study comprised of all 33 primary schools and 1,541 teachers. 155 teachers were used as sample. The findings revealed that: The library resources that are highly available in Sabon Gari Local Government Area are books and pictures, the quality of libra/y resources which influenced teachers of primary schools to use the library are: accuracy and currency of information resources. The study recommends that: Kaduna State Government should intervene more by supplying library resources such journals, proceedings, pamphlets and other audio visual materials like computers, film strip, projector and laptops in Sabon Gari Local Government Area to make leaching and learning more effective.Item Open Access The State Of Preservation And Conservation Of Library Resources In Nasarawa State Board(Department Of Library And Information Science, Faculty Of Education, Nasarawa State University, Keffi., 2017-08-06) Ajav, Gabriel I.The study examined preservation and consei-vation of Resources in Nasarawa State library Board. Three libraries: the Board's headquarters Lafia, Nasarawa State Library Service, Akwanga and Keffi branches were studied. Thesui'vey design was used and the instruments for collection of data were questionnaire and Interview. The population of the study comprises of twenty (20) staff of Nasarawa State library Board. Four research questions were formulated and tested. Descriptive statistics was used to analyse the collated data. The study established, among other things, that the factors responsible for the deterioration of libraiy resources included environmental, biologicalfactors and disaster. It further revealed that the techniques employed by the libraries to check deterioration include cleaning, shelving, and use of chemicals, security measures and environmental control. The problems militating against preservation and conservation of the library resources include poor infrastructure and funding including lack of preservation and conservation policy document among others. Based on the findings, recommendations were made toward improving preservation and conservation techniques.Item Open Access The Impact of Demographic Variables on Job Satisfaction of Professional Staff of the Benue State Library Board, Makurdi(Department Of Library And Information Science, Faculty Of Education, Nasarawa State University, Keffi., 2020-10-05) Tsekyor, Zipporah Member; Iorfa, Terungwa; Ajav, Gabriel I.The study investigated the impact of demographic variables on job satisfaction of the professional staff of the Benue State Library Board Makurdi. The study adopted a descriptive survey research design. The population for the study includes all the 24 library staff of Benue State Library Board Makurdi. Since the population was relatively small and manageable by the researchers, all the 24 library staff of the Benue State Library Board Makurdi was used for the study. The instrument for data collection was a structured questionnaire. Data were collected and analyzed using Means and Standard Deviation to answer the research questions. Findings of the study revealed that aged professional staffs of the library are satisfied with their job while the younger ones are dissatisfied. The study also revealed that female professional staffs are more satisfied with their job than their male counterparts and that married staff are more satisfied than staff who are single. The findings revealed that professional staffs with high academic qualification have greater job satisfaction than those with low qualification. The study concluded that demographic variables such as age, sex, marital status and educational qualification have impacts on the satisfaction of library staff in Benue State Library Board, Makurdi. The recommendation was made that younger library staff should be encouraged to have the dignity of labour which will, in turn, lead to satisfaction with their jobs. Unmarried library staff should give attention and take their work seriously, unlike married library staff, to achieve job satisfaction. Two objectives guided the study, and two hypotheses were formulated and tested at a 0.05 level of significance. The study adopted a survey research design. The target population for the study comprises all the 241 libraiy staff made up of professional librarians and non professionals in the three university libraries in Benue State. The instrument for data collection was a self-developed sfructured questionnaire. Data collected was analyzed using Means and Standard Deviation and Chi-Square Statistic to test the null' hypotheses. The study's findings revealed a positive perceived influence of internet services and mobile technologies on the job performance of university library staff in Benue State. The study concluded that the implementation of internet services and mobile technologies in library operations in university libraries in Benue State has dramatically enhanced the job performance of the library staff. The study recommends the sustainable acquisition and installation of the library's Internet Band Width to . ensure absolute control over its activities to sustain its work output. In addition, the use of mobile technologies in university libraries should be maintained and subscribed to where there are none as it can enhance accessible communication among staff By doing so, work output among library staff will be maximized.Item Open Access Theft and Mutilation of Information Resources in Nasarawa State University Library, Keffi.(Department Of Library And Information Science, Faculty Of Education, Nasarawa State University, Keffi., 2018-10-03) Ajav, Gabriel I.; Agor, Cornelius T.; Akorchur, Simon A.The study focused on theft and mutilation of information resources in Nasarawa State University library Keffi, to determine among others the information resources that are prone to theft and mutilation and the challenges in combating the menace. The survey research design was employed. The population of the study comprised of fifty-seven library staff of the university who formed the respondents. The researchers used questionnaire and observation as the instruments for data collection. The collated data were analysed using frequency counts and percentage. The findings from the data revealed that: Nasarawa State university library collections comprise of both print and non-print resources and are prone to theft and mutilation; hiding of materials for future use, folding, painting and removing of portions in some material as well as overdue and sneaking away with the information material were some of the mode of theft and mutilation in the library. The findings further revealed that restricted lending services, searching users at exit, proper netting of windows and photocopying services constituted security measures employed in the studied library. However, lack of lending services to students, inadequate functional modem security gadgets and inadequacy of staff on duty are some of the issues challenging the security services in the library. The researchers recommend among others the implementation of lending services to student users and provision of adequate functional e-security gadgets to combat the menace in university libraries in general and Nasarawa State university library in particular.
