Item Open Access IMPACT APPRAISAL OF ENTREPRENEURSHIP EDUCATION AS A GENERAL COURSE ON ENTREPRENEUR SKILLS ACQUISITION OF UNIVERSITIES UNDERGRADUATES IN KADUNA STATE, NIGERIA(Department of Library and Information Science, Nasarawa State University Keffi., 2012-10-05) Ibrahim, Adamu; Adamu, Yahaya; Usman, Bashir AhmadThis research work focuses on the appraisal of the impact of entrepreneurship education as a general course to universities undergraduate students on their entrepreneur skills acquisition. The study has seven objectives and seven null hypotheses were formulated and tested. Descriptive survey design method was adopted in the study. Self constructed structured questionnaire titled "Entrepreneurship education and entrepreneur skills" (EEE5) was used for data collected from 300 undergraduate students from three selected universities in Nigeria. 255 copies of questionnaire were properly filled and subjected to statistical analysis. Regression analysis was employed to test Null hypotheses one, two, three, four, five and seven Pearson Product Moment Correlation Coefficient was used to test null hypotheses six. All the hypotheses were tested at significance level of 0.05. The results of the study reveals, among other that teaching of entrepreneurship education as a general course in universities has no significant impact on undergraduate students' skills acquisition for Business formation in Nigeria. One of the advices provided is that every programme should have Entrepreneurship education integrated into its curriculum rather than teaching it as a general course, and that the course should not be a separate, isolated course but should be integrated into all courses.Item Open Access EFFECT OF PEDAGOGICAL APPROACHES TO TEACHING AND LEARNING ENTREPRENEURSHIP EDUCATION ON STUDENTS IN LIBRARY AND INFORMATION SCIENCE SCHOOLS IN NIGERIA(Department of Library and Information Science, Nasarawa State University, Keffi., 2016-02-15) Maifata, Mu'azu NurudeenThis study investigated the effects of Pedagogical Approaches to Teaching and Learning Entrepreneurship Education on Libraty and Information Science Students in US Schools in the Universities in North-West States of Nigeria. The study adopted a survey research design and questionnaire was used as instrument for data collection. The population of the study was made up of the academic staff and students of LIS Schools in Ahmadu Bello University Zaria and Umaru Musa Yar'adua University, Katsina. Twenty nine 29 academic staff and 283 students were selected as sample for the study, two research questions and one hypothesis were formulated and tested. Descriptive and Inferential statistics were used to analyse the data collected. The null hypothesis formulated was rejected suggesting that there is significant relationship between the Pedagogical Approaches to Teaching and Learning Entrepreneurship Education in the LIS Schools and the effect of Entrepreneurship Education on the LIS Students. The study revealsthat effectiveness of the entrepreneurial pedagogy is of paramount importance and should be developed in the university system. Indeed, the method of teaching should be based on students rather than the lecturer; it also, reveals that students prefer learning entrepreneurship through practical approaches rather than through theoretical ones. The study adopted a survey research design and questionnaire was used as instrument for data collection. The population of the study was made up of the academic staff and students of LIS Schools in Ahmadu Bello University Zaria and Umaru Musa Yar'adua University, Katsina. Twenty nine 29 academic stqff and 283 students were selected as sample for the study, two research questions and one hypothesis were formulated and tested. Descriptive and Inferential statistics were used to analyse the data collected. The null hypothesis formulated was rejected suggesting that there is significant relationship between the Challenges of Teaching and Learning Entrepreneurship Education and the effect of entrepreneurship education on the LIS Students. The study reveals that poor funding, insufficient teaching gadgets for practical -oriented training, emphasis on theoretical knowledge, poor enabling environment, ineffective style of instruction, poor or ineffective planning, supervision & evaluation of the programme across board among others affects the success of entrepreneurship education. The study adopted a survey research design and questionnaire was used as instrument for data collection. The population of the study was made up of the academic staff and students of LIS Schools in Ahmadu Bello University Zaria and Umaru Musa Yar 'adua University, Kafsina. However. 29 academic staff and 283 students were selected as sample for the study, two research questions and one hypothesis were formulated and tested. Descriptive and Inferential statistics were used to analyse the data collected. The null hypothesis formulated was rejected suggesting that there is significant relationship between the course content and the pedagogical approaches to teaching and learning entrepreneurship education in the LIS Schools studied. The study established among others, that there is some level of compliance with the National Universities Commission Standard on Entrepreneurship Education in the Library and Information Science Schools studied. But the partial implementation o f the NUC content area and the use of traditional teaching methods will affect the graduates' entrepreneurial skills upon completion of their programmes. The study recommends for the full implementation of NUC entrepreneurship course contents and issues concerning teaching strategies should be reviewed and contemporary approaches to teaching/learning be adopted.Item Open Access EXPLORATIVE STUDY ON THE ADOPTION AND UTILIZATION OF MOBILE DEVICES FOR ACADEMIC ACTIVITIES AMONGST DISTANCE EDUCATION STUDENTS IN NIGERIA(Department of library and information science , Nasarawa State University Keffi., 2017-08-06) Kabir, Fatima S.; Adamu, YahayaThe study investigated the adoption and utilization of mobile devices for academic activities amongst distance education students in Nigeria. The study had three objectives and three null hypotheses. Descriptive survey design was adopted for the study. The population of the study was 55,746 final year students of six distance learning institutions in 2013/2014 academic session in Nigeria. The researchers adopted stratified sampling and simple random sampling to select 940 students used for this study. A structured questionnaire titled ‘Students Use of Mobile Phones in Distance Education in Nigeria (SUMPDEN) ’ and Individual Innovativeness Scale (IIS) of Hurt, Joseph, & Cook 1977 were used for data collection. The instrument was validated by four experts in educational research. The reliability of the instruments was determined by conducting a pilot test using 94 students of National Teachers Institute, Kaduna Study Centre, using Test-Retest method. Data obtained from the pilot study were coded and analyzed. Cronbach Reliability coefficient obtained was 0.77. The instruments were administered personally by the researchers with the assistance of five trained research assistants. Data collected were analyzed using Pearson Product Moment of Correlation. The results showed among others that, students of Open and Distance Education have no requisite skills on usage of mobile devices for academic activities in Nigeria. Based on the outcome it was concluded that students in Open and Distance Education in Nigeria do not maximize the usefulness of a mobile learning system that provides access to learning materials that would help improve learning outcome amongst students. The researchers recommended among others that government and stakeholders in distance education should create awareness programmes that will enable students to acknowledge the importance of mobile phone technology in distance education institutions in Nigeria.Item Open Access The State Of Preservation And Conservation Of Library Resources In Nasarawa State Board(Department Of Library And Information Science, Faculty Of Education, Nasarawa State University, Keffi., 2017-08-06) Ajav, Gabriel I.The study examined preservation and consei-vation of Resources in Nasarawa State library Board. Three libraries: the Board's headquarters Lafia, Nasarawa State Library Service, Akwanga and Keffi branches were studied. Thesui'vey design was used and the instruments for collection of data were questionnaire and Interview. The population of the study comprises of twenty (20) staff of Nasarawa State library Board. Four research questions were formulated and tested. Descriptive statistics was used to analyse the collated data. The study established, among other things, that the factors responsible for the deterioration of libraiy resources included environmental, biologicalfactors and disaster. It further revealed that the techniques employed by the libraries to check deterioration include cleaning, shelving, and use of chemicals, security measures and environmental control. The problems militating against preservation and conservation of the library resources include poor infrastructure and funding including lack of preservation and conservation policy document among others. The population of the study was made up of the academic staff and students ofLIS Schools in Ahmadu Bello University Zaria and Umaru Musa Yar'adua University, Katsina. However; 29 academic staff and 283 students were selected as sample for the study, two research questions were formulated and tested. Descriptive statistics were used to analyse the data collected. Eighteen universities with 480 library staff were randomly selected and used for has sample for the study. Thirty (30) items structured questionnaire which was validated by experts was used for data collection.Item Open Access Design and Implementation of an Effective Academic Web-Based Content Management System(Library and Information Science Department, Nasarawa State University, Keffi, 2018-10-01) Folorunso, Monsuru IbikunleIn education, teaching and learning using Internet is one of the main important media for lecturers or instructors to provide teaching materials, post announcement, provide online quiz etc. AWCMS is a web-based system application developed to assist academics to create their personal profile and manage their course contents for teaching and learning purposes. Having this student-to-lecturer interface, the interaction between lecturers and students will be more effective and convenient. The research work comprehensive explained what content management systems is all about, its type and a review of work done in that area was carried out. The benefit of integrating this type of application in an educational setting was emphasized with a prototype design and implementation snapshots. The methodology adopted and utilized in this study is Structured System Analysis and Design Methodology (SSADM), using a 3-Tier application architecture.Item Open Access Plagiarism and Academic Performance of Students in Federal Tertiary Institutions of Adamawa State.(Library and Information Science Department, Nasarawa State University, Keffi, 2018-10-01) Mamza, Wavi PurThis study investigated the Plagiarism and its Effect on Academic Performance of Students in Federal Tertiary Institutions in Adamawa State. To achieve this, two objectives and two research questions were formulated. Survey research method was adopted for the study. One hundred and twenty questionnaires were administered. >n the Students of Federal Tertiary Institution in Adamawa State that is, forty each in Modibbo Adamawa University of Technology Yola, Federal College of Education Yola and Federal Polytechnic Mubi Yola Campus. Descriptive statistic was used to answer the research questions while inferential statistic of chi square was used to test the null hypotheses. The findings revealed that: The bulk of the Students of Federal Tertiary Institutions in Adamawa State are completely ignorant of the concept “plagiarism “as a crime and its consequences; lack of orientation and the desire to earn more grades constitute the major reason why students in Federal Tertiary Institutions in Adamawa State spend their time plagiarizing. The study recommends that: the managements of Federal Tertiary Institutions in Adamawa State should find a way of organizing programs such as library instruction/skills to their students on how to use other people's work without plagiarizing to avoid its consequences.Item Open Access Sources of Information for Inheritance Conflict Resolution by Traditional Rulers in Daura Emirate Council of Katsina State, Nigeria(Library and Information Science Department, Nasarawa State University, Keffi, 2018-10-01) Bako, Musa Katsayal; Ibrahim, Musa MaimunaThe study investigated how traditional rulers source and access information to resolve inheritance conflicts in Daura Emirate of Katsina State, Nigeria. The study specifically identified the knowledge and experience of traditional rulers in Daura Emirate about inheritance, source of information consulted by traditional rulers, and challenges encountered when accessing information in resolving inheritance conflicts. The study employed qualitative method using case study approach, from social constructionism perspective and information interchange theory as theoretical framework. The population of the study comprised all the traditional rulers appointed by Daura Emirate, of Katsina State, with a sample size of fifteen (15) participants’ selected using non-probability sampling techniques (purposive sampling). The study further used analytical inductive process to identify 348 narratives explaining how traditional rulers in Daura Emirate sources and access information to resolve inheritance conflict. The narratives collapsed into six (6) emergent categories to explain, traditional rulers’ experiences about inheritance, and how they source and access information for inheritance conflict resolutions. Findings indicated that traditional rulers in Daura Emirate of Katsina State believed that: inheritance is divine and are shared to the heirs; Source of information the traditional rulers consult to aid in sharing of inheritance are from: textual references and non-textual references; discontent by the heirs, ignorance and holding information with only little exception were the challenges experienced by the traditional rulers in Daura Emirate Council. The study recommend that traditional rulers should be more aware of information related to inheritance as stipulated in the Holy Qur'an and Hadith. This can be done through workshop, symposium and seminar organized by the Emirate council.Item Open Access Availability and Use of Smartphone Services by Students of Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Kaduna State.(Library and Information Science Department, Nasarawa State University, Keffi, 2018-10-01) Aliyu, AbdulkadirThe study examined the availability and use of smart phone services by students of higher institutions in Kaduna Stale with its main focus on Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria. The specific objectives are to; find out the services available or. smart phones used by students; discover which sites the student visit regularly. He study used primary data and selected a sample of320. The study use questionnaire and the data were analyzed using descriptive statistics using SPSS version 16.0. The findings of the study revealed that the service mostly used by the students is web browser. The study recommended; that the students should create a balance between mobile use and academics. It is concluded that wrong use of smart phone could result to negative consequences that would affect the academic performance of the students.Item Open Access Availability and Use of Government Documents by Academic Staff in Library Complex of Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria(Library and Information Science Department, Nasarawa State University, Keffi, 2018-10-01) Ibrahim, Hassan Mallam; Alhassan, Yahaya Karaye; Suleiman, MusaThis study examined the availability and use of government documents by academic staff in the library complex of Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria. To achieve the objective of the study, three research questions were raised and answered. The population of the study comprised all the academic staff in the twelve faculties of Ahmadu Bello University. Survey research design was employed, purposive sampling was adopted where 186 academic staff were selected and questionnaire was used as instrument for data collection. Descriptive statistics was used to analyze the data collected. The study discovers that: technical report, government gazettes, annual reports, statistical reports, law reports, bulletins among others were the types of government documents that were highly available (in hard copy format) except statistical and annual reports which are in both hard and soft copies (offline) only available in the Library Complex of A.B.U Zaria; family members/colleagues/friends and personal experience were the main sources of awareness of the academic staff The study, therefore, recommends among others that: the library complex of A.B.U Zaria should institute current awareness service with the aim of making the academic staff aware of the availability of government documents as soon as they are acquired. The awareness can be created through mobile phone text messages, library bulletin, e-mail addresses, social media, text message. The study concludes that lack of effective awareness creation undermines the high level of use of government documents by the academic staff of Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria.Item Open Access Assessment of Undergraduate Degree Programmes in Library and Information Science of University Library Schools in Northern States of Nigeria(Library and Information Science Department, Nasarawa State University, Keffi, 2018-10-01) Ibraheem, Isyaku; Aduku, Baba S.The Study assessed Undergraduate Degree programme of library and information science of University Library Schools in Northern states of Nigeria. Survey research method was used and using simple random sampling technique, four (4) library schools were selected for this study; Documentary sources (BMAS) and questionnaire were the instruments used to collect data. 80 copies of questionnaire were administered to the academic staff and 67 copies were returned. Finding of the study revealed that, professional competencies pointed to the need for library schools to continue reviewing their curriculum to fit in the contemporary age expectations; administration and conduct of UTME and Post-UTME screening test should be entrusted to the care of men and women of proven integrity; Emphasis should also be put more on current Information Technology courses such as Communication Systems, Database Management, System Analysis and Information Science and more current and up to date facilities for teaching should be acquiredItem Open Access Assessment of Marketing Strategies Used for Marketing Information Resources and Services in University of Nigeria Library, Nsukka(Library and Information Science Department, Nasarawa State University, Keffi, 2018-10-01) Lucky, Abdulsalami T.; Umar, Isaac MamoThis study was carried out to assess the marketing strategies used for marketing information resources and services by the University of Nigeria Library, Nsukka. To achieve this, three research questions were raised and answered: What are the information resources and services available in UNN libraries, Nsukka?, What are the marketing strategies used in UNN libraries, Nsukka?, What are the challenges encountered in marketing the information resources and services to users in UNN libraries, Nsukka? Survey research design was adopted for the study and questionnaire was used as instrument for data collection. 146 respondents were used for the study. The study discovers that: the major strategy used in marketing of the information resources and services are the use of librarians to inform their colleagues (faculty members) and students, library notice board, electronic mails, library website and mobile phone. The study recommends that librarians should be taught marketing concepts through workshops and in-house training. This should be done regularly and the University library should as a matter of urgency organise a user education programme, this could be in form of a course in all the departments within the University while orientation programme could be organised for students.Item Open Access Availability, Adequacy and Effectiveness of Library Resources and Services in Some Selected Public Libraries in Nasarawa State(Library and Information Science Department, Nasarawa State University, Keffi, 2018-10-01) Musa, Suleiman; Solomon, Agube A.; Kudu, DogaraThis paper examined the availability, adequacy and effectiveness of library sources in some selected public libraries in Nasarawa State. Descriptive survey design was used in carrying out the study. The population of the Study was two thousand six hundred and sixty-seven (2667) users of Nasarawa State Public Libraries out of which two hundred and sixty-Seven (267) users were selected as sample. Questionnaires was used as instrument for data collection, the data collected was analyzed using frequency counts and percentage. The study discovered among other that: publication are the information resources available in Nasarawa Stale public libraries; Lack of funding by the government; trained Librarians; Internet service; trained security personnel among others are the challenges faced by the public libraries in Nasarawa Slate in providing effective services to users. The study recommends among other that: Nasarawa Slate Government should provide necessary support to public libraries in order to improve on electronic information resources e.g. e-reports, e-journals, CD-ROM and audio/visual materials so as to meet the varied information needs of the users; The Nasarawa State Government should make a concerted effort to improve on the public libraries funding, trained security personnel, provide internet services, trained Librarians. This will show more commitment of state government to public libraries in Nasarawa state.Item Open Access Awareness and Use of Electronic Information Resources in University Libraries and Academic Performance of Postgraduate Students in North Central States of Nigeria.(Library and Information Science Department, Nasarawa State University, Keffi, 2018-10-01) Chuks-Ibe, P.O.; Udensi, J.N.; Madu, E.C.; Saka, K.A.This research work examined the level of awareness and the extent of utilization of electronic information resources (EIRs) in university libraries on academic performance ofpostgraduate students in North central states of Nigeria. Two research were raised and answered: What is the level of awareness of the available electronic information resources (EIRs) by postgraduate students in the university libraries in the North Central States of Nigeria? How often do postgraduate students utilize EIRs in University libraries in North central states of Nigeria? survey research design was used with a target population of 15, 338 postgraduate students. A sample size of 556 postgraduate students was determined using a multi stage sampling technique. Four rating scale questionnaire was used as the instrument for data collection, frequency and simple percentage were used to analyse the data. It was discovered that the postgraduate students’ level of awareness of EIRs was low and that the utilisation of CD-ROMs was discovered to be “very often”. It was recommended among others that the management of university libraries should from time to time organise user awareness programmes that will enlighten the postgraduate students on the types of available electronic information resources as well as educating them on how to use them.Item Open Access Provision of Information Literacy as an Antidote for Socio-Economic Growth of the Rural Dwellers in Nigeria.(Library and Information Science Department, Nasarawa State University, Keffi, 2018-10-01) Ode, EIijah O.On a daily basis, problems are arising and becoming more difficult to solve because people lack access to meaningful information vital to good decision making and developmental needs. The budding numbers of people who are victims of the ugly scenario are often the rural communities who have no common means of becoming information literate due to their economic and information deficiencies. The thrust of the paper is that providing appropriate information literacy will strengthen and empower the socio-economic development of the rural dwellers in Nigeria and make them to become critical and effective information users who will be able to participate actively amongst global actors in the information -based economy. Against this backdrop, the paper advocates the provision of information literacy as a veritable resource that will enhance the socio-economic development of the rural communities in Nigeria. The paper further highlights the role of information literacy in the developmental needs of the rural populace, identifies some inherent challenges in the provision of information literacy to the rural dwellers and way forward were identified on how to medicate the challenges of providing information literacy to the rural dwellers.
