Item Open Access AGRICULTURAL TERMINOLOGIES IN ENGLISH, HAUSA AND FRENCH.(Department of French Nasarawa State University Keffi, 2016-04-07) Iwala, DinatuThis work is undertaken in the context of the great concern by governments at all levels to promote the agricultural production and ensure food security. The study focuses on the role of effective communication in agricultural extension services taking as case study the fertilizer voucher programme which was conducted by Bauchi stated government, International Fertilizer Development Company (IFDC'), and United States Agency for International Development (USAID). The research paid attention to terminological equivalence used in the implementation of the programme in Hausa, English and French languages with the aim that acquaintance with such terminologies will make communication effective in fertilizer implementation of the programed as the Bauchi case of study is an experimental phase. The data used were collected from handbills, voucher papers and other materials the researcher got since she participated in the programme in the capacity as an interpreter. We gathered the technical vocabulary from these handbills and analyzed them using the linguistic method. The study enabled us to gather a number of similarities in the nature and structure of technical terms, especially in English and French which may be basically as a result of the historical ties between the two languages. Most of the differences were seen in Hausa grammar. It is therefore pertinent that experts in languages make their contributions in standardizing the technical terms and make more effective the communicative aspect of the agricultural extension service. The metamorphosis has manifested interesting phases and trends which have been essentially combatant in nature. From the colonial era to present, colonialism, on the one hand, and against neocolonialism and imperialism, on the other. The period after independence ushered in the literature of auto-criticism, popular in the first instance, with the first set of the second generation of African literary writers. This literature of auto-criticism seems to be at its second phase and more true to type now with Aminata Sow Fall as the precursor of this second phase particularly with the advent of Ex-pere de la nation (1987). That literary work is interested in politics as a societal phenomenon. Thus, Ex-pere de la nation, is for us, a political model for our African political leaders, as this paper intends to divel on.Item Open Access Chinua Achebe and the Gender Issue in the Anthills of the Savannah(Department of French, Nasarawa State University, Keffi., 2013-06-15) Ijah, Gideon AkaseThe history of gender relation worldwide has never been pleasant as women are always at a disadvantage position without any consideration for their emotions and aspirations. Left in this quagmire, women have resolved to take their destiny in their hands by embarking on the struggle forequality with men. This struggle is mirrored in literatures of the world: African male writers especially, present female characters in less than charitable light. Consequently, women writers, paying men in their own coins, present male characters as brutes and monsters. The article attempts an examination of the characterization of female characters to show on one hand what societies stand to gain if women are situated in the main stream of events and on the other hand to set a model for a balance representation of gender issues in world societies and Nigeria in particular.Item Open Access THE CRISIS OF BLACK AWARENESS AND THE DIALECTICS OF VIOLENCE IN AFRICAN AND AFRO-LATIN AMERICAN FICTION(Department of French, Nasarawa State University, Keffi., 2011-08-28) Ijah, Gideon AkaseThe kind of leadership of the future which black writers envisage of their society can be deduced from the caliber of the personalities who people the universe of black literature. For literary protagonists not only faithfully reflect the people who create them, but they also mirror the ideological, political, economical, social and religious philosophies which define a people. The present paper attempts through an examination of two significant black novels - Jugungo by Ecuadorian writer, Adalberto Ortiz and Remember Ruben by the Cameroonian writer, Mongo Beti to identify the heroes who symbolizes the black leadership of the future. The paper argues that the two heroes cannot be good leaders because the do not envisage anything beyond the mere physical extermination of the enemy. It goes further to criticize the writers for failing to wed violence with lucid political ideology. It concludes by making the point that cty positive leader must of necessity combine courage and vision. For if we destroy we lAist have something in mind to replace what we have destroyed otherwise our action will be negative.Item Open Access A CRITICAL ANALYSIS OF TECHNICAL TERMS IN ENGLISH, HAUSA AND FRENCH LANGUAGES IN AGRICULTURAL EXTENSION PROGRAMMES: THE FERTILIZER VOUCHER SYSTEM.(Department of French Nasarawa State University Keffi, 2013-03-01) Iwala, DinatuThis work undertaken in the context of the great concern by governments at all levels to promote the agricultural production and ensure food security. In Nigeria, for example, the two governments have signed a pact in Agriculture, which includes the above, under the FAD AM A projects.Consequently, the translator becomes more or less a “rewrite”. He participates at different levels: first, in the reformulation. And since the task of the translator is to “reproduce” the message, his freedom is limited, thereby making his task very difficult because he needs to ask and answer various questions concerning the text to he translated. What are these questions? The translation at hand is a translation of a pragmatic text which involves pragmatic “explanations What then constitutes the equivalence of the text to be translated? In other words, how can the translator go into the pragmatic “explanations’'? These are the questions this paper seeks to address. The paper compares the French text (Source Language) with the English (Target Language) translation. The source language comes from the French Government but the English version was done here in Nigeria. The paper analyses the translations, discovers some lapses and proffers possible solutions to the problems.Item Open Access DIPLOMACY AND THE QUESTION OF FRENCH LANGUAGE STUDIES(Department of French Nasarawa State University Keffi, 2019-10-01) Adeagbo, Tunde John; Tanitolorun, Ezekiel OladeleNo intellectual of the 21 century makes himself a recluse by language barrier particularly in this era of globalisation. This is because the project is not property financed on one hand and, on the other, the stakeholders of the economic planning programmes did not actually recognize the progress that would be experienced economically if French becomes the second official language. It is also surprising to note that the on-going educational reforms have not addressed the employment of experts in French language which would lead to making it a compulsory General studies course in the tertiary institutions’ curriculum. We have, in the light of this, analysed the Nigeria’ economic situation and spelt out the place of French in its improvement.Item Open Access French Language Proficiency as a sine qua non for National Unity and Development(Department of French Nasarawa State University Keffi, 2019-09-12) Adeagbo, Tunde JohnProficiency is a quality necessary for every positive human because it gives rise to expertise and assures the undertaking. In this paper we have tried to examine the levels of gender differentials in both the traditional Igbo society and in the contemporary Igbo society. In the analysis that follow shows that we had a higher level of differentials in the traditional setting than we now have in this contemporary period. The reason is that the irrational approach to the gender question is fast obliterating the differentiation that should exist between the male and the female.By gender j differentials, we mean the level of awareness, appreciation of the need to j maintain at reasonable levels the gender sensitivity between the male and I female. It is true to some extent that what a man can do, the woman can | equally do, but it is not expedient that women should insist on doing everything the man does even at the expense of nature’s assigned honorific roles of wifehood and motherhood. At the same time we stress that all the rustic are atavistic male chauvinistic character of domination, oppression and marginalization must be done away with. Other wise, when gender differentiations are completely obliterated, gender sensitivity will also disappear with it. This will lead to some un-naturalness. To remain gender sensitive, we have to keep the gender peculiarities in focus to a reasonable limit.Item Open Access Helping to Improve Readers' Skills(Department of French, Nasarawa State University, Keffi., 2022-03-12) Ijah, Gideon AkaseThe main thrust of this article is to bring out remedial measures aimed at assisting struggling readers to attain a good level of proficiency in public secondary schools in Benue State.
