Citizen Journalism is giving traditional media in Nigeria a black eye and challenging it to be more transparent and more investigative. This development and the resultant activity of the social media have generated prospects ' as well as trepidations in Nigeria, though the emergency of this citizen journalism has obviously contributed to the rapid * development of the information society/network society. With the Uses and Gratification theory, this paper therefore juxtaposes the prospects and challenges of Citizen Journalism in Nigeria. Though • citizen journalism as found is delivering news at a speed of lightning and with a high level of immediacy than the mainstream media, it is not though without adverse challenges since journalism as a profession seems to be an all-comers affair. • Obviously there are deficiencies in the strictly upholding of the ' tenets of Journalism profession such as truthfulness; accuracy, * . objectivity, impartiality, fairness, authentication of sources and : public accountability, in citizen journalism.
