Item Open Access Advertisements & Marketing of Modem African Healing Shrines(Department of Mass Communication, Nasarawa State University Keffi, 2019-01-06) Michael, Matthew; Ezeanoikwa, Andrea N.F.African media landscape has witnessed the increasing presence of African healers who had strategically appropriated for themselves the media resources of the modem world in order to advertise their healing practices. They promise their modem clients wellness and healing through the psychological conditioning of their clients, and the appropriations of African worldview on media channels—to persuade their clients. Harnessing modem scholarship on the media and religion, the present paper engages the cultural significance of these healing adverts and their polemic against the legitimizing monologue of modem medicine. It also problematises these African healing adverts in the wider contexts of global discourses and the creative tensions in the marketing of these religious and ethnic products on modem advertising landscape. On the other hand, it underscores the totemic importance of these adverts of wellness to contemporary modem Africa especially in the context of the lingering bankruptcy of its health sector, the increasing conditions of poverty and the failing economy of most African states. Citizen Journalism is giving traditional media in Nigeria a black eye and challenging it to be more transparent and more investigative. This development and the resultant activity of the social media have generated prospects ' as well as trepidations in Nigeria, though the emergency of this citizen journalism has obviously contributed to the rapid * development of the information society/network society. With the Uses and Gratification theory, this paper therefore juxtaposes the prospects and challenges of Citizen Journalism in Nigeria. Journalist are people that got formal training in the field of Journalism, equipped with ethics and legal rights on how to go into the society gather information and send it across to the heterogeneous audience with intention of effecting positive impression on them. However, Science reporting apart of exposing the activities of scientists it provides modern gadget that made communication more effective and made feedback actualised in mass communication with the emergence of cell phones and social media. This study is to study Nigeria Media(African Independent Television (AIT) Channel Television, Nigeria Television Authority, (NTA I, Galaxy Television, NTA 2 Lagos, Human Right Radio). Aiming at discovering if these Journalist do consider to engage the activities of Scientist in media running order in form program, panelist discussion, news documentary and four Journalists were interviewed at the course of this study to ascertain how journalist cover scientist invention in Nigeria. Based on the findings it is revealed that media houses do not a lot much time to science programme and the media policy effects the journalist interest in covering science activities. This is true because, films are a "uniquely rich medium for the purpose of studying culture." Thus, one of the primary benefits, particularly among nations, is thatf ilms are entertaining, engaging, and in many cases stimulate curiosity toward other cultures.Jit is in this regard that the paper identified the various ways by which film can be used to foster intercultural communications (especially between Nigeria and among other nations). The paper was anchored by Cultural critical studies theory & Standpoint theory respectively.Jit thus conclude & recommends that movies do help in shaping cultural attitudes and customs, as audiences adopt the attitudes and styles of the characters they watch on screen. Therefore, Filmmakers should always write their movie stories to influence cultural attitudes toward certain social issues.Item Open Access Broadcast Media Coverage of Genetic Disorder Counselling in Nigeria(Department of Mass Communication, Nasarawa State University Keffi, 2019-03-03) Ezeanoikwa, Andrea N.F.; Anzaku, Zainab; Anthony, Ogande; Nyiyongu, Charles NgushaHealth as “a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being is not merely the absence of disease”. In Nigeria, most of genetic disorders are not properly understood and this leads to divorces. The aim of this study is to expose the needfor broadcasting media to be covering the counselling sessions on non-genetic disorder bearing in mind the features of radio and television, it will go a long way to stop breaking up ofm arriages because of ignorance and limited resources to the citizens they do not know that counselling sessions are held to manage the situation. Using the survey method 100 individuals between the ages of 16-45 were randomly selected for evaluation of genetic disorder counselling awareness. Questionnaires were taken to hospitals, Asokoro District Hospital Abuja and Federal Medical Centre Keffi, Nasarawa State. From this it was discovered that 80% of the respondents showed that they were not aware that these Hospital offer such services and individuals exposed to counselling agreed that genetic counselling would help in prevention of genetic diseases. Among other things the researcher recommended that broadcast media should take it as a duty to keep citizens on the awareness, counselling sessions on genetic disorder to ease their anxiety.Item Open Access Impact of Social Media on Political Behaviour among Youths in Imo State, Nigeria.(Department of Mass Communication, Nasarawa State University Keffi, 2022-12-12) Ezeanoikwa, Andrea N.F.Concern over Youths political engagement have attracted attention of political stakeholders as well as the interest of scholars in political communication and electoral studies. Being a global phenomenon resulting from hybrids of deterministic causations, youth civic and political engagement receives attention from multi-theoretical and cross disciplinary perspectives with diversifying prognoses. From media centric perspective, the quality and quantity of information, access to, and representation in the media have been isolated as causes of Youth political malaise. Political economy theorists, for instance blame the hyper-commercialization of the media in a post materialist world for the political apathy being experienced by the youth. A corpus of studies, mostly from advanced democratic climes are however, challenging the monolithic notion on youth's political engagement. Premised on the social media affordance, these alternative viewpoints believe that youth may not be engaging in electoral politics, they are exploiting other participatory repertoires created by the new communication ecology. Giving these mixed findings, that are mostly Western centric, we explore the forms of political behaviours of young people in Imo State, South-East Nigeria within the theoretical prism of Civic Volunteerism Model. Findings revealed that social media political campaign s have positive relationships with both online and offline political participation, with online participation begin higher, even after controlling for political interest, political knowledge and political efficacy. The results have practical and policy implications that need to be addressed to guarantee the future of participatory political culture.Item Open Access Imperative Of Media Policy And Usage By Political Parties In Nigeria(Department of Mass Communication, Nasarawa State University Keffi, 2018-01-01) Iredia, Tonnie O.; Ezeanoikwa, Andrea N.F.The main thrust of this paper is to determine the expedience of politicians employing certain strategies for getting their messages to people especially the electorate. The paper hypothesizes that no strategy is as effective as the uge of the media for the purpose. Anchored on the Selective Perception and Uses and Gratifications Theories, the paper relied on questionnaire and interview as instruments for data gathering for the study. Copies of the questionnaire were administered on three hundred respondents made up of politicians and civil'Society groups in Nigeria while five mass communication and political science scholars were interviewed to corroborate the response or throw light on them. Findings revealed that whereas it is helpful to diversify the strategies and methods of political communication in a polity, the pervasive nature of the mass media makes them the best harbinger of information to the greatest number of people. The paper therefore recommends that politicians should design and adopt a media policy for their political parties while ensuring that their officials and supporters keep to the philosophy and format of their chosen policy as guiding principles in publicizing their activities.Item Open Access Reducing Youth Unemployment in Nigeria through Media Entrepreneurship(Department of Mass Communication, Nasarawa State University Keffi, 2020-01-06) Santas, Tsegyu; Francis, Akogwu; Ezeanoikwa, Andrea N.F.This study explores the option of media entrepreneurship as a viable means of empowering Nigerian youths for national development. The study employed the library research to execute the study, while development media and technological determinism theories served as the theoretical framework of the study. The study found out that youths are turning to media entrepreneurship for alternative job opportunities. These opportunities include photography, citizen journalism, screen writers, Disc joker, the internet, business centers and IT experts. Despite the opportunities that new media is providing for youth entrepreneurship, the problems of lack of capital, inadequate power supply, lack of ICT skills among several issues are the challenges facing youth entrepreneurs in Nigeria. Based on these challenges government and the private sectors must provide an enabling environment for young people to establish their own small businesses so as to be gainfully employed and thus reduce the unemplo3ment rate in the country.
