Item Open Access AN INVESTIGATION INTO FACTORS AFFECTING GIRL-CHILD EDUCATION IN FUNTUA LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF KATSINA STATE(Department of Educational Foundations, Nasarawa State University Keffi, 2003-08-19) Abdulkareem, YunusaThe purpose oft his study was to investigate into the factors affecting girl-child education in Funtua Local Government Area of Katsina State. The sample comprised 150 respondents: 78 males and 72 females both literate and illiterate adults of 30 years and above. Three hypotheses were formulated and tested. Data were analyzed using the x2 (chi-square) test statistics of 0.5 level of significance. Results indicated that parents' level of education; socio-economic status and male attitudes accounted for low enrolment of girl-child in the primary and post primary institutions in the area of the study. It has forced governments across the world to place restrictions on movement while exempting providers of services to strictly observe social distancing while providing services as a way to contain the spread of the virus. Unfortunately, the educational sector in Nigeria is grossly affected with roughly 10.3 million secondary school students been out of school as a result of the school closures with no or limited access to learning activities. To cushion the effects of the pandemic, the world is embracing technological innovations in many sectors; most especially, education. UNESCO has recommended the use of distance learning programmes, open educational applications and platforms by schools and teachers to reach learners remotely. While Nigerian government we reluctant about bringing out policy statement towards providing access to learning activities, most private secondary schools across the country are making use of the available technological resources to initiate e-learning programmes for learners at home. Laudable as these initiatives appears, it also faces militating challenges. This paper addresses the impact of COVID-19 on secondary school education, place of e-learning, its application, benefits and challenges of integrating e-learning in secondary school education in Nigeria. It was eveiybody else's desire that the elections should be peaceful devoid of rigging and manipulations of results so that we can have right type of leaders who will move the country forward and to ensure a sustainable democracy in Nigeria. Under normal circumstances', elections are supposed to be free, fair and transparent going by the rules and regulations guiding it, but in the Nigerian context, the reverse was the case. The paper argues that the foundation of learning is laid during the earliest years of a child, yet many children still miss out this crucial early learning experiences and support for their socio-emotional and physical development. Children safety, health, and happiness, well-qualified teachers, trip(s), exposure to a variety of culture(s) and technology were identified as ways of improving early childhood education in Nigeria. The paper further notes that Early Childhood Care, Development and Education is crucial in the sense that it helps in the building of strong foundation for the child’s physical, mental, emotional and social development just as it improves the well-being of the children through healthy habits like brushing and regular washing of hands. It also brings about the development of literary and numerical skills of the children as well as socialization which helps children overcome shyness and gain self-confidence. The dearth of professionally qualified teachers and caregivers, frequent use of foreign instructional materials for teaching and learning, lack of access to ECCDE programme by children in the rural areas as well as the use of foreign language as a medium of instruction were among the top challenges of the ECCDE in Nigeria revealed from the study. To overcome such challenges, the paper suggests adequate provision of professionally qualified teachers and caregivers, the use of indigenous instructional materials for teaching and learning, the establishment of model ECCDE schools in rural areas as well as the use of indigenous language as a medium of instructionItem Open Access INFLUENCE OF PARENTAL BACKGROUND ON EDUCATION OF THE GIRL-CHILD IN NASARAWA STATE, NIGERIA: IMPLICATION FOR POST COVID SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT(Department of Educational Foundations, Nasarawa State University Keffi, 2003-05-13) Saaondo, Torsar James; Abdulkareem, Yunusa; Nwosu, Patience NgoziThis study examined the influence ofparental background on education of the girl-child in Nasarawa State. The target population consist of755,912 parents from both rural and urban settlement and the sample size is 384. Four research questions were answered using descriptive and inferential statistics (mean and standard deviation) and four corresponding hypotheses were tested at 0.05 level of significance using t-test. The instrument used to collect data from respondents is titled Influence of Parental Background on Education of the Girl-child Questionnaire (IPBEGO). All analysis was done using Statistical Packages for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 21. Findings from the study revealed that Parental income influences the education of the girl-child in Nasarawa State. The study also revealed that rural and urban parents perceive differently education of the girl-child in Nasarawa State. The study concludes that parents from urban who have attained better education have more understanding towards the necessity of girl-child education and have more positive concern towards the education ofg irls than those parents from rural who are less educated.Item Open Access SOCIAL STUDIES AND COUNSELLING AS MEANS OF CURBING TERRORISM AND MILITARISM FOR NATIONAL SECURITY AND PEACEFUL CO-EXISTENCE IN NIGERIA(Department of Educational Foundations, Nasarawa State University Keffi, 2019-05-02) Abdulkareem, Yunusa; Amos, A.A.Social Studies education is a value laden subject, which relates citizen obligation and duties to the state. It is a process of integrating the citizen with national policies, economic, social and technological values. Social Studies is defined as citizenship education that prepares individuals to live cooperatively with one another, appreciate one’s culture and have a thorough knowledge of existing norms, structure and privileges. Counselling on the other hand helps the individual to realize the need for interdependence with various groups of the society and the world at large. The paper begins by explaining vividly the concept of terrorism and militarism and establishes the difference between terrorism and militarism. It reveals that militarism is the offspring of terrorism, and that different countries of the world adopted militarism to protect their nation and restore law and order. The paper reveals that militarism and terrorism are problems that affect harmonious living of Nigerian people. In addition the paper highlights causes of conflicts or crises in the past and recent Nigeria. It further looks at Social Studies and counselling as an imperative paradigm as a means of curbing terrorism and militarism in Nigeria. It suggests that Social Studies and Counselling approaches and strategies be used for harmonious living to enhance lasting peaceful co-existence in Nigeria
