Abstract

This study examined the use of social media platforms Facebook and Twitter, as Public Relations communication tool for Federal Government of Nigeria's N-Power Programme in Nasarawa State and Federal Capital Territory. The research adopted a survey research design with questionnaire as the data gathering instrument. The survey questionnaire was administered to 465 N-power beneficiaries in selected areas of Nasarawa State and FCT. The findings of this study revealed that 97% of N-power beneficiaries are active users Facebook and Twitter while 94% agreed to following N-power on either Facebook or twitter or both. The study also discovered that Facebook and Twitter are to a large extent being used by N-power for PR communication. Furthermore, the study uncovered that Facebook and Twitter provide interactive platforms for N-power to relate in a mutually beneficial relationship with the beneficiaries and as such, these platforms prove to be effective for PR communication. The study therefore concluded that social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter constitute the primary media for relaying public relations messages of the N-power programme to beneficiaries in Nasarawa and FCT as well as other states of the federation since it adopts a central communication system. Among other things, the study recommended that government agencies, private and non-governmental organizations should leverage on the interactive nature of social media to create and maintain mutual lines of communication with their respective publics.
