dc.description.abstract | Antenatal care (ANC) among pregnant women is an essential factor in reducing maternal and infant mortality. Most women in unindustrialized societies regrettably do not have access to such care. The paper analyzed the knowledge, attitude and practices of pregnant women towards antenatal care in General Hospital Garaku, Kokona Local Government Area of Nasarawa State, Nigeria. The social survey research design was adopted for this paper. Data were collected using qualitative and quantitative methods. 262 questionnaires were distributed among pregnant women between the ages of 15-49 years who registered for antenatal care between the periods of September 2019 to March, 2020 in General Hospital Garaku, Kokona Local Government Area of Nasarawa State, Nigeria through simple random sampling techniques and four health practitioners in the antenatal clinic were also interviewed, their responses were used to strengthen the responses gathered from the pregnant women. Data collected showed that majority of the respondents had knowledge on antenatal care and positive attitudes towards antenatal services. Most practices of the respondents are favourable. Notwithstanding, there are few respondents with little or no knowledge on antenatal care. It was discovered that some socioeconomic factors such as affordability, transportation, proximity to health facilities, family income hinder the utilization of antenatal care services by some respondents. The paper recommends the need to establish more equipped antenatal facilities in rural communities as well as regular training should be conducted for health practitioners in the antenatal unit in order to update their knowledge on the factors that hinder the utilization of antenatal services by pregnant women. | en_US |
