IMPACT OF COUPLES' LITERACY LEVEL ON RESOLUTION OF MARITAL DISPUTES AND DIVORCE

| dc.description.abstract | This study investigated impact of couples' literacy level on resolution of marital disputes and divorce issues in Kwande Local Government Area of Benue State, Nigeria. Four research. questions and two hypotheses guided the study. A descriptive survey design was adopted for the study. A total sample of 220 couples, comprised 110 literates and 110 illiterates w/ns selected randomly. The instrument of the study was developed by the researchers and validated. It is a structured questionnaire adopted also for the interview schedule. The reliability coefficient of 0.92 of the instrument was determined by Cronbach alpha procedure. The data analysis was conducted using SPSS, IBM version 20. Research questions were ■ answered using percentages, while hypot heses were tested at 0.05 level of significance using X-tests. The findings of the study showed that literate and illiterate couples preferred to resolve marital disputes out of court. They also preferred family assets to be given to the husband during divorce. The findings of the study also indicated that literate and illiterate couples do not differ in their resolution of marital disputes and divorce issues. Hence, couples' literacy has less impact on resolution of marital disputes and divorce. Based on the findings, it was recommended that government should strengthen marriage institution by training more professional counselors, among others. | en_US |
