dc.description.abstract | Politics, which permeates in every area of administration or governance, refers to the activities of government in the administration of the state through numerous decisions taken to allocate resources, as well as to resolve conflicts. It is from the various decisions taken that policies emerge. However, it is not all decisions that result in policies, but all policies are derived from decisions. The foreign Policy of a nation is reflection of its domestic politics, need and aspiration. Much as there is relationship and influence between the domestics’ politics and the foreign policy discharged. A significant and growing literature on international relations (IR) argues that domestic politics is typically an important part of the explanation for states' foreign policies, and seeks to understand its influence more precisely. I argue that what constitutes a “domestic-political” explanation of a state's foreign policy choices has not been clearly elaborated. What counts as a domestic-political explanation is defined by opposition to systemic or structural explanations. But these may be specified in several different ways—I spell out two—each of which implies a different concept of domestic-political explanations. If a systemic IR theory pictures states as unitary, rational actors, then a domestic-political explanation is one in which domestic-political interactions in at least one state yield a suboptimal foreign policy relative to some normative standard. Nigeria as a case study between year 2010 to 2015 showcased the politics and policies towards building a good image international and establishing a strong economy, with growth in social infrastructure and development. It is remarkable that since the return of democracy in 1999, Nigeria has focused on developing strategies partnership with traditional and emerging global powers to support its domestic priorities. It has strengthened old relations and developed new ones and has tried to balance its role as a regional and continental power which addresses domestic concerns. | en_US |
