dc.description.abstract | This study examines the constraints and achievements of ECOWAS. The main contention of this research work is to analyzed out the challenges of economic integration in West Africa sub-region with particular reference to the constraints and achievements of ECOWAS and understanding the political economy of West Africa regional integration and attempts to delineate a viable framework to systematically analyze the productive capacity scheme in the geographical area and their possible contribution to grow within the context of economic integration. However, this study employed both primary and secondary method of data collection. For the primary data questionnaires were administered while for the secondary sources quantitative data were collected. The neo-liberalism theory is adopted as a theoretical framework. The study found out that the approach has to do with the market integration approach to economic integration adopted by ECOWAS with the focus on removal of trade and non-tariff barrier. The weakness is the market integration model lies in the focus on trade liberalization have the main instrument of integration. More so, ECOWAS decision and policies aimed at strengthening integration have little ratification by member state and the implementation of regional policies is difficult. ECOWAS major problematic is especially that its activities are principally funded from contribution of member states. Members either do not pay their contribution on time or some occasion does not pay altogether. The Study therefore, recommended that there is need for the ECOWAS to come out with new effective political will that can change the pattern of economic integration and regionalism in West Africa. | en_US |
