dc.description.abstract | This study examined the politics of resource control and development in Niger delta. The study adopts a descriptive survey design. The population for this study was drawn from Delta State, Rivers and Bayelsa with sample size of four hundred (400) using random sampling techniques. Questionnaire was use as an instrument to collect data, the questionnaire was composed of both structure and unstructured. Data collected for the research work were analyzed using simple statistical tools such as simple percentage, tables or frequencies distributions tables. Base on findings it is revealed that military in politics distort Nigeria’s Federalism, lack of visionary political leadership and corruptions are the major contributor to the agitation for true federalism in Nigeria. Corruption and diversions of the substantial revenue accruing to all the three levels of government, and federal government quest to control oil and gas resource in the Niger Delta is responsible for the fiscal federalism crisis and adverse politics of resource control in Nigeria. Base on the finding the following recommendations were made: The character of the Nigerian state must be restructured, The Federal Government should see the development of Bayelsa State and the entire Niger Delta Region as a top priority in the developmental agenda of the government, and stop paying lip-service to the people of the region, The derivation principle as the revenue allocation formula in the country must be strictly followed and government must sincerely fight against corruption which is the bane of the Nigerian problem. | en_US |
