dc.description.abstract | In recent years, the wearing ofwristbands has become apopular culture in many parts of the world. This can be identified in sports, annual Carnivals, Medicare, and even Religious Crusades. A cursory examination within the Christian Pentecostals revealed that there is growing popularity in the wearing of wristbands, under the guise of expression offaith, divine healing, protection, and conversion identification with the denominations. This study is an empirical assessment of the symbolism in the wearing of wristbands among Christian Pentecostals in the Mar ar aba suburb, in Karu Local Government Area of Nasarawa State. Through the aid of a questionnaire, three hundred and four respondents were randomly interviewed. The symbolic interactionist theory in the sociology of religion was adopted as a theoretical orientation. Findings from this study revealed that besides demographic characteristics ofrespondents as determinants for the wearing of wristbands, other underlying factors on the symbolism in wearing of wristbands among Christian Pentecostals include, the desire to identify with a particular Christian denomination, healing from spiritual attack, and spiritual re-birth. The study suggests that the symbolism of wearing wristbands among Christian Pentecostals should not be seen from the face value, but rather the need for Christian Pentecostals to be more discreet and objective in associating with persons or religious leaders/clergies in the society. | en_US |
