dc.description.abstractThe society and the employer of labour often ask for students (employee) who have cognitive skills such as problem solving, critical thinking, analyzing data, and presenting them orally and in written format and so on, therefore, the teacher has to engage the students during training in such assessment to depict such characteristics. For this reason, alternative assessment approaches are needed in assessing both the learning process and the learning product. Nowadays, one of the alternative assessment technique used in various disciplines such as mathematics, science and social sciences is portfolio. The purpose of this paper is to introduce a portfolio assessment method which is not commonly used in educational institutions. To achieve this aim, some information of portfolio such as its definition, types and advantages of portfolio were presented. The, portfolio assessment method is also compared with the traditional one in terms of different aspects through presenting research studies in the literature that reported the superiority of the portfolio assessment to traditional assessment tools in education.
