Today, individually produced citizen journalism exists in the form of social media platforms such as blogs, YouTube, and Twitter. These social media platforms encourage and facilitate engagement with other citizens who participate in creating content through commenting, liking, and sharing. This practice is considered to be the 21st century version of individualized citizen journalism. It is on this regard that the paper explores the process through which Citizen Journalists using new forms of media attempt to play a role in influencing public opinion in our contemporary society (Nigeria). The paper was anchored by theories of Citizenship and Democratic Participant Media Theory ” respectively. In the paper, the concept of citizen journalism was looked upon as "all forms of public reporting that is being carried out online. Survey research method was used to carry out investigations. The paper however concludes that; Citizen Journalism plays an important role in giving individuals a platform for expression. Thus, the paper recommends the need to sensitize Nigerian journalists on proper use of citizen journalism.en_US
