FACTORS PROMOTING ABERRANT BEHAVIOUR AMONG FEMALE INMATES IN CORRECTIONAL CENTERS IN BORNO STATE, NIGERIA: IMPLICATIONS FOR COUNSELLING

dc.description.abstractThis study was a descriptive survey that investigated factors promoting aberrant behaviours among female inmates in Correctional Centers in Bomo State, Nigeria. langet population of the study comprised of 12,967 female convicts and those awaiting trials in 5 correctional centers and 6 lockups in Borno State, Nigeria. Purposeful and stratified random sampling techniques were used in selecting a sample of 300 volunteered female respondents from 5 correctional centers in Borno Mate, Nigeria. Researchers’ designed 24 items Structured Interview Schedule (S.I.S) tagged "Female Inmates Interview Schedule (FIIS)” was the instrument used in collecting data for the study. Data collected were analyzed using Mean and Standard Deviation to answer the research questions while t-test was used in testing e nu ypot esis at 0.05 confidence level. Results of the study showed that poor parenta rearing, i iteracy, street begging and hawking were some of the factors promoting aberrant behaviour among females while age and height are not the promoting factors of aberrant behaviour among females and that religion has significant influence on aberrant behaviour among female inmates in the study area. Some of the implications that require counselling as well as the recommendations proffered are that, poor parenting, hawking, illiteracy and broken homes promote aberrant behaviours among females thus, government at all levels should provide entrepreneurial survival skills and vocational facilities to enhance family well-being and reformatory roles by the correctional centers in Borno State, Nigeria.en_US
