Abstract
This study examines Urbanization and population explosion I Abuja Municipal Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja. Urbanization basically has to do with the migration of people from the rural setting to urban centres for either political, security or social economics reasons. The research work also analyzed the cause of population explosion, effects of population explosion and how to curb the situation. The data used for the study was generated from primary and secondary sources. The theory adopted for the study is the “push and pull factors theory” which stipulates that these factors are responsible for the movement of migrants from their origin to their destination. Findings from the study revealed that the rapid influx of people into the capital city is caused by search of improved standard of living, the absence of basic social amenities in the rural areas and the essential infrastructures in the city are being over stretched. Therefore, the study recommends that the Federal Capital Development Authority opens up new areas with social amenities to decongest the city centre and government at all levels should make provision for basic infrastructure in the rural areas so as to make rural dwellers comfortable and minimize their rapid migration into the Federal Capital Territory and Abuja Municipal Area Council in particular.
