EVALUATION OF POLYPROPYLENE AND PALM KERNEL SHELL AS BIOFILTER MEDIA FOR DENITRIFICATION OF FISH CULTURE WASTEWATER
(Department of Fishery, Nasarawa State University Keffi, 2015-09-26) Dauda, A. B.; Akinwole, A. O.
Nitrification removes ammonia and Nitrite-Nitrogen (N0i-N) from aquaculture w a stew at u but lead to increase in the amount of Nitrate-Nitrogen (NCh-N) in the system. NOj-N though not toxic to fish at low concentration affects growth and yield at higher concentration thus making further denitrification of the waste water a necessity. This study investigated Polypropylene bio-block (PP) and Palm Kernel shell(PK) as biofilter media for the denitrification columns were used. Wastewater from African catfish (Clarias gariepinus) monoculture facility was ueat* “S"IS ' determine media. Selected water quality parameters were measured in effluent wastewater an lofi Ic,fi L ,moved,. the change in water quality. 'The denitrification efficiency was determined using and Volumetric N Percentage ( ./ oJn conversion rate(VNR). Data obtained were analyzed using t-test. The parameters in the filtrates were within the range recommended for aquaculture, water reuse and discharge into the environment, NO3-N in filtrates was reduced to 45 mg/L in PP and 25 mg/L in pk in the denitrification system.

PRELIMINARY SURVEY OF AQUACULTURE POTENTIALS OF MANGROVE OYSTER (CRASSOSTREA GASAR) IN ARID ZONE NIGERIA.
(Department Of Fishery, Nasarawa State University Keffi., 2016-01-01) Sule, S.; Sotolu, A. O.
The need for aquaculture intensification and expansion for sustainable production of rich protein means that there is the need to turn to the living resources of the adjacent sea, creek waters and inland water bodies mostly shell fish species. The tide of public opinion needs to be turned to the culture of mollusk which offers great potentials both as a rich protein source and as a source of income. In time past Mangrove Oysters known as lesser fishery resource was either invisible or ignored, but should now be seen as an extractive industry with a proud renewable potential and thus sustainable way of making a living. This survey is aimed at establishing the potential culture of oyster on River Yobe. Water quality parameters of importance were accessed which include water depth, salinity, pH, dissolved oxygen and freedom from pollution. Basic requirements of culture area are the same for fish farming. Facilities for culture are inexpensive and can be easily made using local materials. Most important to establishing an oyster farm is the correct placing of collectors and adequacy of harvesting as they thrive successfully without formulated diets and concludes that salinity has no effect on growth and survival since the study area is a freshwater environment.

AMINO ACID AND PROXIMATE COMPOSITIONS OFCULTURED AND WILD CLARIASGARIEPINUSFROM MAKURDI-NIGERIA
(Department Of Fishery, Nasarawa State University Keffi., 2016-03-03) Nege, S. A.; Ayuba, V. O.
Amino acid and proximate analysis of Clarias gariepinus from Lower Benue River and the earthen ponds were carried out using standard methods. Apart from Leucine, all the other 16 amino acids analyzed did not vary statistically between C. gariepinus from Lower Benue River and the cultured one. Proximate compositions of the fish samples indicated a statistical variation in fat, ash, crude protein and moisture contents as C. gariepinus from Lower Benue River was higher in crude fat (5.99±0.015%than3.40±0.055%) and ash content (2.74±0.035%than 1.91±0.010%). Higher values of crude protein (16.73±0.030%than 15.97±0.035%) and moisture content (80.65±0.150than 77.24±0.015) were recorded. The results of this study clearly indicate that fish sampled from these two sources have adequate protein and amino acid levels required by man on daily basis as stated by FAO/WHO/UN in about 10g weight.
