Abstract

Governments worldwide are integrating computer-based technologies into the centerfold of public administrative reforms to digitize the delivery of services and the process of governing The ultimate goal of public service today, is to deliver services to Nigerians, The problem of Nigerian public service is poor service delivery, which is mostly due to lack of accountability, transparency and commitment in making services work for poor and marginalized citizens., the Federal Executive Council (FEC) of Nigeria in 2001 approved the Nigerian National Information Technology (IT) policy. This vision is to make Nigeria an IT capable country in Africa and a key player in information society by the year 2020, using IT as the engine for sustainable development and global competitiveness. This study examined e-Government implementation in Nigerian: challenges and prospect, the study analyzed the challenges and prospect of implementing e-government in Nigeria, the paper relied on secondaiy materials, this consist of published document of government offices or government published materials such as bulletin, journals and magazines. The paper found that Nigeria like many other emerging economies has been making efforts to implement e-governance processes Out of necessity and importance, there are lots of challenges that hamper the effective implementation of e-governance in Nigeria, such as digital divide, infrastructural facilities, skills manpower etc. the introduction of electronic system in Nigerian public service reduced cost of governance, enhanced transparency and accountability in public service, the study recommends that the search for effective and efficient service delivery in the public sector, there is urgent need for the fully implementation of e-governance in Nigeria.
