Item Open Access APPRAISING GENDER IMAGING OF FEMALE ROLES IN SELECTED NOLLYWOOD FILMS(DEPARTMENT OF THEATRE AND CULTURAL STUDIES, FACULTY OF ARTS, NASARAWA STATE UNIVERSITY KEFFI, 2021-07-12) Abimiku, Abigail EslaThe media is one of the strongest means of communication as it informs, educates and entertains. Film however as an arm of the media is seen as the mirror of the society as it is supposed to depict the societal practices and also ridicules the society. The African woman despite her strength and struggles have been neglected to the background due to the cultural roles ascribed to them and even though they try to gain recognition and the chance to showcase their strength and skills, the manner in which they have been portrayed has kept them stunted. Instead of contributing to socio-economic growth, they try to gain recognition amongst their male counterparts. Hollywood films have also helped in projecting these images rather than create awareness for a fair representation of African women through films. It is against this back drop that this research work has tried to identify those roles and images that have been ascribed to women and to find out its effects on the woman’s self-esteem and also ascertain if the films attempt to correct the negative narrative given to women at the end of such films. Hinging on the feminist theory, the research has used the qualitative method of research and also looked at Mr and Mrs and The real man with a few references from Dry as coded films analyzed for the purpose of this work. Findings included women given the images of ambitious, objects of male gratification, weaker sex and irresponsible. These images rub them of self-esteem and although some films try to correct such images it comes rather at the end where there is little or no room for further achievements. Recommendations are that female artists should learn to reject roles that will demean their reputation and producers and script writers should learn to improve on the films they write and produce to give women more relevance thereby boosting their self-esteem and representation.Item Open Access ASSESSMENT OF PACKAGING AS A MEANS OF MARKETING NIGERIAN CULTURAL CUISINES FOR GLOBAL MARKET(DEPARTMENT OF THEATRE AND CULTURAL STUDIES FACULTY OF ARTS, NASARAWA SATE UNIVERSITY, KEFFI, 2021-03-11) Okpete, kennethThe study, “Assessment of Packaging as a means of Marketing Nigeria Cultural Cuisines for Global Market”, is aimed at examining the various ethnic groups and their cultural dishes in Nigeria, to determine the extent packaging' contribute in the marketing and promotion of indigenous cultural Cuisines, to determine the challenges of packaging Nigeria Cultural Cuisines for global market and factors affecting exports of Nigeria Cultural Cuisines. We have been inundated daily with reports of wife battering, child abuses and molestation, rape and sexual harassment, acid attack, parental negligence and now killings of spouses and children at the slightest provocation. All these culminated into what is today known as domestic violence. The study also found that patriarchy permeates the consciousness of young male adults thereby leading to an almost conscious perception of superiority. This in turn leads to acceptance of violence as a corrective for the inferior gender. The processes used for addressing issues of domestic violence in our society, especially the fonnal court processes have resulted in delay in the dispensation of justice. Hence, the need for a participatory modelled Alternative Dispute Resolution-ADR that would aid in addressing the challenge becomes necessary. The study was aimed at establishing that Alternative Dispute Resolution approaches could significantly help in addressing issues of domestic violence at Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) of Federal Capital Territory, Abuja. This study collected quantitative data from 385 respondents from the area and qualitative information from 4 Key Informants using structured instruments namely the questionnaire and interview guide. From the analysis, the study revealed that Information, Education and Communication (IEC) materials achieve a significant level of citizen participation. This is especially so at the Placation level of participation where citizens collaborate with government in creating awareness on issues. Thus, the study recommended that Alternative Dispute Resolution mechanisms be adopted in resolving domestic violence. The mechanisms should be those that delegate and give citizens participation and control of the communication processes. In addition, a paradigm shift should be engendered to reorient the culture and tradition of patriarchy. ADR mechanism such as mediation, negotiation and conciliation should be sustained as the first line of conflict management and resolution with regards to issues of domestic violence.Item Open Access PARTICIPATORY COMMUNICATION STRATEGIES FOR SUSTAINABLE CONSTITUENCY PROJECT IMPLEMENTATION IN EDO STATE, NIGERIA(DEPARTMENT OF THEATRE AND CULTURAL STUDIES, FACULTY OF ARTS, NASARAWA STATE UNIVERSITY KEFFI, 2021-07-23) Eigbe, Augustine IbhagbosoriaThis study examined the relevance of communication and participation in relation to sustainable constituency project implementation in Edo State, Nigeria. Constituency projects are projects designed and nominated by legislators to extend the dividends of democratic governance to their various individual constituencies in order to enhance development at the grassroots level These projects are usually recommended by the legislature to the executive arm of government in the process of annual budgeting with the supposed noble objective and intention that when they are completed, it would enhance social mobility and economic development amongst the citizens of the country. Be that as it may, there are contending and challenging issues around the annual budget tracking and comprehensive information about the implementation status of constituency projects where such projects have made little or no impact on the communities where they are sited over the years. This study is of the assumption that with effective communication and the active participation of the intended beneficiaries in the constituency project cycle, there would be likelihood of transparency, accountability, sense of ownership and, thus guarantees project sustainability. Participatory Communication Theory and the Communicative Planning Theory were adopted to buttress the need for the use of participatory communication strategy for sustainable constituency project implementation in the state. Consequently, the method of participatory communication involving questionnaire, and interviews were used to investigate previous constituency projects implementation in Edo State. From the findings of this study, it has been observed over time that despite the humongous amount allocated for these projects across the three (3) Senatorial Districts of the state; it has been woeful tales of substandard, abandoned and over invoiced projects. In conclusion, the study reaffirmed participatory communication strategy as a panacea for sustainable constituency projects in the state. Among other things, the study recommends therefore, that there should be underlying policies, legislative and institutional frameworks that should provide not only a pragmatic, but also scientific criteria and parameters for determining the why, how, and where of constituency projects in Edo State, NigeriaItem Open Access UTILISING PARTICIPATORY COMMUNICATION APPROACH FOR CURBING CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE IN PUBLIC PRIMARY SCHOOLS WITHIN ABUJA MUNICIPAL AREA COUNCIL(DEPARTMENT OF THEATRE AND CULTURAL STUDIES, FACULTY OF ARTS, NASARAWA STATE UNIVERSITY KEFFI, 2021-07-07) Ughegbe, Lemmy AvuwakogheneUtilising Participatory Communication approach for curbing Child Sexual Abuse in public primary schools with in Abuja Municipal Area Council is the focus of this study because whereas there is a rich literature on the psychosocial consequences of child sexual abuse, there is a paucity of literature on how to prevent or curb this menace, which is on the rise in the city. This study therefore examined how participatory communication approach can be deployed through some of its tools and models in empowering the pupils with knowledge and safety tips to avoid falling victim of the menace. The study was anchored on Participatory Communication Theory (PCT) and Symbolic Convergence Theory (SCT) for its theoretical framework for their pragmatic relevance. While it found the participatory communication tools of drama and storytelling not just potent but indispensable tools in empowering and equipping pupils with knowledge and safety measures to help curb the menace, it also discovered that government through relevant regulatory agencies need to do more in the education and sensitisation of pupils and staff of primary schools within the said municipality. The study concluded by recommending that the policy makers - the Education Secretariat, the Education Resource Centre (ERC), Department of Policy Implementation (DPI) and all stakeholders within the Abuja Municipal Area Council introduce Child Sexual Abuse Prevention Education into the primary school education curriculum. It also urged the various stakeholders and education regulators to make it a policy that participatory communication tools such as drama and storytelling are maximally utilised in conducting advocacy campaigns and enlightenment for pupils, teachers and parents.
