Item Open Access AN ASSESSMENT OF THE PRACTICE OF FEMALE GENITAL MUTILATION AMONG THE PEOPLE OF BORGU LOCAL GOVERNMENT OF NIGER STATE(Department of Social Studies, Nasarawa State University, Keffi, 2015-05-11) Ibrahim, Muhammad Hassan; Aliyu, Bello Mohammed; Abdulrahman, Ansharifat YetundeThe Origin of Female Genital Mutilation is as old as history itself At a time, both Culture and Religion encouraged Circumcision. The paper outlined some objectives to include whether Female Circumcision can reduce emotions and libido towards opposite sex and to find out why such practice is still in existence in Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State. The study review wide range of literature on Female Genital Mutilation practices around Africa and Borgu Kingdom in particular. Cross-sectional Survey design was employed and multistage sampling technique was used to select a sample of 230 in five communities in Borgu local Government Area. Data collected were subjected to descriptive statistics analysis and Conclusions drawn sees Virginal Mutilation as a violation of the right of the female child. And it has no any relationship what-so-ever with promiscuous behavior. Therefore, the government must enact and uses anti-female genital mutilation laws if this practice must be abolished in the area.
