Item Open Access Assessment of the Health and Living Conditions of Migrants in Keffi Local Government /Area of Nasarawa State(Department of Sociology, Nasarawa State University Keffi, 2018-01-01) Mamman, Matthew Samuel; Zakari, AbdulkadirThe paper is an Assessment of the health and living conditions of migrants in Keffi Local Government Area of Nasarawa State with the objective to examine the nature of migrants' living conditions in Keffi Local Government Area of Nasarawa State. The paper adopted Health Belief Model as theoretical framework. The paper employed social survey design and used questionnaire as instrument for data collection. 100 questionnaires were distributed and 93 were retrieved for analysis. The paper revealed that migrants' health and living conditions are more vulnerable to health risks and expose to hazard in the course of migration. The paper concludes that the circumstances surrounding the migration process increase migrants' vulnerability and expose migrants to various health risks. Therefore the paper recommends that a formal and mandatory health insurance should be established for all migrant workers with a reasonable cost that is suitable to the employers' capability, income, length of stay and Strategies should be developed, and national policies that regulate the right and access to health care of migrants in Nigeria should be instituted and sustainedItem Open Access Assessment of the Nature of Labour Casualization in Nigeria(Department of Sociology, Nasarawa State University Keffi, 2013-03-03) Zakari, Abdulkadir; Ifah, Sunday S.; Bilyaminu, Muhammed S.Casualization of labour has become a global challenge that has been of major concern to labour unions and government authorities in different parts of the world including Nigeria. Its widespread has not only crept from the private sector into the public sector of the Nigerian economy but it has also permeated core government establishments. Given the above, the study assesses the nature of labour casualization in Nigeria. The paper is a theoretical discourse hence it adopts a qualitative research approach and relies on secondary data sources obtained from journal articles, government publications, books, as well as web-based studies on labour casualization. The study is guided by Karl Marx's Conflict Theory which best highlights the precariousness and unevenness of Labour Casualization. The findings reveal a national workforce that is characterized by an undesirable level of casualization in both private and public establishments occasioned by the generally high level of unemployment in the country which presents a depressing job situation for casual workers due to the rarity of opportunities for confirmation of appointments from casual to permanent employment. The paper, therefore, recommends that the country should prioritize efforts towards the creation of decent employment opportunities for its employable populace.Item Open Access Effect of Strategic Human Resource Management on Organisational Performance in Nigeria(Department of Sociology, Nasarawa State University Keffi, 2018-01-01) Zakari, AbdulkadirStrategic Human Resource Management (SHRM) is a logical offshoot of organizational development. This paper x-rayed the effect of strategic human resources management on organizational performance in Nigeria with the objective to examine the current trends in strategic human resource management in organizational performance in Nigeria. The paper adopted Contingency theory as theoretical framework. Secondary sources of data collection was used for collection of data. This paper concludes that an effective Strategic Human Resource Management system allows organizations to address human resource issues strategically. The paper recommends that management should make provision for constant and effective training to help boost the capacity of the employees of the organization and should make it a policy for managers to involve their subordinates with tasks that will help with their performance and service delivery skills.Item Open Access EFFECTS OF LABOUR CASUALIZATION ON EMPLOYEE COMMITMENT IN NASARAWA STATE HOUSE OF ASSEMBLY, LAFIA - NIGERIA(Department of Sociology, Nasarawa State University Keffi, 2022-01-01) Zakari, Abdulkadir; Ifah, Sunday S.; Bilyaminu, Muhammed S.The “world of work” in recent times has witnessed an unacceptable rise in labour casualization. While global unemployment stays excessively high at around 207 million people in 2022, hundreds of millions more, through the casualization of labour, have been strapped into “working poverty”. Just as the rest of the world is relatively overwhelmed by its continuous rise, Nigeria is currently experiencing the most bizarre labour crises occasioned by casualization. The paper examines the effects of labour casualization on employee commitment in Nasarawa State House of Assembly (NSHA), Lafia, Nigeria. A social survey research design was adopted to lodge a mix- research approach which utilized primary and secondary data. Census Sampling Technique (CST)was also adopted since the entire workforce of the NSHA is not a large population. The CST is a statistical method that studies all the units of apopulation. The study is guided by Social Systems Theory which evaluates social phenomena within the context of a complex interrelationship of component elements towards system efficiency. The findings reveal a labour force that is characterized by an overwhelming majority of casual staff. The paper makes use of secondary data mainly from newspapers, textbooks, magazines, scholarly articles, the UXs reports, among others, to explore emerging trends of drug abuse among youths in Nigeria. The paper concludes that Drug abuse is a universal problem and the trends have completely changed. Hence, the paper recommends that government should have a well- defined comprehensive and realistic policy on the control of drugs; and Public education should be targeted at the vulnerable segment of society, such as the older children, adolescent and young adults.Item Open Access Examination of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps in Combating Pipeline Vandalism in the Niger Delta Region, Nigeria.(Department of Sociology, Nasarawa State University, Keffi, 2021-01-17) Ishaya, Daniel Leku; Yahaya, Sabo Sarkin Noma; Zakari, AbdulkadirThis paper examines the rising cases of oil thefts, illegal bunkering and pipeline vandalism in Nigeria and the examination of Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps in curbing the menace. The study examines the causes of oil thefts, illegal bunkering and pipeline vandalism as well as the measures adopts by the Corps to combat crime and criminality in the region. The problems associate with the study are the persistence vandals in the Niger Delta region is due to the enthroned corruption by Nigerian elites, governments inappropriate policies, high level of youth unemployment, ineffective and corrupt law enforcement agencies and international crime collaborations. Literatures review and related materials were reviewed as well as theoretical school of thought. Secondary source of data collection was used for the study. The study revealed that government should make an effort to curb the problem bedeviling the region and to strengthen the NSCDC. The paper concludes and recommends that Niger delta need enough security architecture and collaborative effort of the community to regulate and management the illegal crime. There should be a synergy and ways to put an end to oil thefts, pipeline vandalism, illegal oil bunkering in order to make Nigeria economic robust and business destination by international bodies.Item Open Access Impact of Urbanization on the Family Structure in Nigeria(Department of Sociology, Nasarawa State University, Keffi, 2019-01-01) Mamman, Matthew Samuel; Zakari, AbdulkadirThe world has been experiencing rapid growth of cities in the2T‘ century and urban population has more than tripled, from just over 750 million to about 8 billion. This paper discusses the impact of urbanization on the family structure in Nigeria. The paper makes use of secondary data to explore the impact of urbanization on the family structure in Nigeria. The paper concludes that urbanization has largely impacted negatively on the family structure. Therefore, the paper recommends among other things that policy makers should give more attention to the plight of urban and rural dwellers especially as regards to gross inadequacy of basic infrastructures as this will have significant control on ruralurban migration triggered by the gross inadequacy of these basic infrastructures in the rural area and government must make efforts to disperse population through it housing schemes by encouraging private partnership in the provision of descent housing where needed.
