Vigilante groups have help in regulating, managing and controlling crime as well as curtailing criminal activities. Some of the menace bedeviling vigilante in fighting crime in Nigeria are inadequate modern gadget and facilities, poor enumerations and lack of proper synergy and internal control system. A survey design was used. One hundred and twenty-three (123) questionnaires were administered and one hundred and six (106) were retrieved. Simple percentages were used for data analysis. Social Contract theory was adopted. Findings shown that the crime rate is alarming and formidable. Therefore, vigilante groups in its current form would combating criminal components and possibly enhanced management of crime and reduction. Findings revealed that members of the community need to collaborates with the vigilante groups for effective support and to proffered ways of solving the problem of crime in Nigeria. The study concludes and recommends that vigilante activities should be strengthen and motivated in carried out effective duty. Monitoring team should be setup in mapping and checking all the activities of vigilante group in crime regulation and control. There should be a policy framework for networks and information system mechanismto boat and equipped them. Training and re-training is a gateway for a well-trained able bodied persons recruited from the community in order to enhanced understanding and maintain cordial relationship and, partnership between the police law enforcement agency and vigilante groups in the community.Item Open Access CAUSES, FACTORS AND THE SOCIO-ECONOMIC IMPLICATIONS OF HUMAN x TRAFFICKING IN NIGERIA(Department of Sociology, Nasarawa State University Keffi, 2015-01-01) Usman, Alhaji Yusuf; Abdullahi, Bashir Idris; Yahaya, Sabo Sarkin NomaHuman trafficking is largely a form of slavery. The international awareness of the crime has over the years increased. Nigeria is a country of origin, transit and destination for human trafficking. This paper x-rayed the causal factors and socio-economic implications of human trafficking in Nigerian society as one of the most recent and widely spread social menace. The paper used secondary data and factors such as greed, poverty, among others were found to be the major predisposing factors in human trafficking in Nigeria. The phenomenon was discovered to have taken a modernized dimension, thus affecting the full development of human capital in the country. Some useful suggestions were advanced to helping in winning the global war against the trade in human persons.Item Open Access CHALLENGES OF ACCESSING BASIC NECESSITIES BY INTERNALLY DISPLACED PERSONS IN GARAKU IDP CAMP, KOKONA LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA, NASARAWA STATE - NIGERIA(Department of Sociology, Nasarawa State University Keffi, 2021-04-05) Mamman, Matthew Samuel; Yahaya, Sabo Sarkin NomaOne red-hot issue that has trapped the attention of the international community is that of internal displacement resulting from both man-made and natural occurrences. The paper examines challenges of accessing basic necessities by internally displaced persons in Garaku IDP Camp, Kokona Local Government Area, Nasarawa State-Nigeria. The social survey research design was adopted for this paper. Data were collected using quantitative methods. 152 questionnaires were distributed among internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Garaku IDP Camp, through simple random sampling techniques. Data collected showed that sex, religion, and educational attainment have influenced the challenges of accessing basic Necessities by internally displaced persons in Garaku IDP Camp, Kokona Local Government Area, Nasarawa State- Nigeria. The paper recommends that Government agencies, Non-Governmental Organizations, Security operatives, and other critical stakeholders should overhaul the relief material distribution process through the strict monitoring of the distribution team to avoid misuse of authority, diversion of relief materials, segregation, harassment, gender bias, and other irregularities before, during and after distribution. Also, there is the need for proper coordination among NGOs and other humanitarian bodies to ensure items provided for IDPs (especially women and children) are not diverted.Item Open Access Combating Armed Banditry in Southern Kaduna, Nigeria: An Evaluation of the Effectiveness of Security Agencies(Department of Sociology, Nasarawa State University Keffi, 2021-06-02) Musa, Emmanuel Umaru; Yahaya, Sabo Sarkin NomaThe research is on combating armed banditry in Southern Kaduna, Nigeria: Evaluating the effectiveness of the Security agencies. A sample of 89 respondents drawn from the five local government areas of southern Kaduna mostly affected by armed banditry was used for the study. The questionnaire was used as a major instrument for the collection of primary data from respondents; in-depth interviews were also conducted to stimulate further information from respondents. Secondary data was sourced from books, journals, newspapers, and online peerreviewed presentations. The routine activity theory was adopted to explain armed banditry in Kaduna State Findings suggested that banditry is on the increase as attacks are weekly and daily, the absence of security agencies in most communities and lack of more sophisticated weapons were responsible for lack of arrests anc stoppage of banditry in the Southern Kaduna region of Kaduna State. The study recommends that governmen should be more committed through the provision of superior firearms and ammunition to security agencies anc increase the number of security forces deployed in the affected communities to combat the phenomenor successfully.Item Open Access COMMUNAL INITIATIVE TOWARDS CRIME CONTROL AND PREVENTION IN KEFFI TOWNSHIP, KEFFI LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF NASA RAW A STATE-NIGERIA(Department of Sociology, Nasarawa State University Keffi, 2021-04-04) Abdullahi, Kassims Adams; Yahaya, Sabo Sarkin NomaSince the dawn of human civilization, crime has been a reoccurring problem. There is hardly any society in the world today without the challenges of crime. This paper examines the communal initiative towards crime control and prevention in Keffi Township, Keffi Local Government Area of Nasarawa State-Nigeria. The social survey research design was adopted for this paper. Data were collected using quantitative and qualitative methods. 101 questionnaires were distributed and 99 retrieved from respondents from four selected elect or al wards in Keffi Local Government Area of Nasarawa State-Nigeria, through simple random techniques. The technique used in the analysis of data for the paper was the quantitative data analyzed using univariate analysis for this study. Data collected showed that loss of lives and properties are implications of crime and criminality among the residents of the study areas and mobilization of the private security group and private neighborhood patrol team are the two top measures often taken by residents of the area to control and prevent crime occurrence. The paper recommends that there is a need to adjust our political and economic system to alleviate poverty. The questionnaire and in-depth interviews were used as major instruments for gathering primary data from the respondents while secondary data were sourced from journals, hooks, reports, articles, speeches, and online documents. 1 he World System and Dependency Theories were used to explain COV ID-19 in Subon-wuse. Findings suggest that the lockdown, social distancing, hand-washing, and wearing of masks measures introduced by the government to curb the rising trends of COVID-19 negates the Socio-cultural. financial, and religious stand of the people. This also affected their daily means of livelihood their need for congregational prayers, and their spiritual obligations in groups'. Ceremonies like burials, marriages, naming, amongst others. It also contradicts the practice of solidarity with cultural ceremonies. Nevertheless, they have really never been accorded that due recognition. This paper therefore, examines the treatment of crime victims in the administration of criminal justice in Nigeria. The paper utilizes secondary data and it was discovered that victims of crime do not only suffer from the direct impact of crime but also suffer mistreatment and neglect within the criminal justice system in the hands of the police and courts; in the process of arrest, investigation and prosecution of offenders. The paper recommends, among other things, that crime victims participate actively, not passively, in the adjudication of their cases. A sample of 89 respondents drawn from the three local government areas affected by the activities of criminal armed marauders was used for the study. The questionnaire was used as a major instrument for the collection of primary data from respondents; in-depth interviews were conducted to stimulate further information from respondents. Secondary data was sourced from books, journals, newspapers, and online peer-reviewed presentations. The routine activity theory was adopted to explain criminal armed marauding activities in Kaduna Stale. Findings suggested that criminal armed marauding activities are on the increase as attacks are now weekly and daily, methods of attacks included killings, kidnappings, and burning of farmlands and houses amongst others, with dangerous weapons including guns, mcitchets, and arrows, while the consequences of the attacks were deaths, hospitalizations, loss of farmlands and loss of cattle amongst others were identified.. The study recommends that government should stop playing politics with banditry and be more committed through the provision of superior forearms and ammunition to security agencies and increase the number of security forces deployed in the affected communities to combat the phenomenon successfullyItem Open Access Effects of Imprisonment on Inmates of Nigerian Prisons(Department of Sociology, Nasarawa State University Keffi, 2014-01-01) Yahaya, Sabo Sarkin Noma; Usman, Alhaji YusufA prison is supposed to be a place for reformation in behaviour of an individual whose life pattern is not in tandem with accepted norms, values or behaviors in the society or persons who by omission and commission have violated the criminal laws of the land which attract prison terms. The current philosophical trend in prisons operations today is that of the twin concepts of reformation and rehabilitation of inmates. However, the Nigerian prisons instead of fulfilling this primary and manifest objective, they are found to impact negatively in the lives of inmates both while in the prison and after discharge. This paper therefore examines some of these impacts the imprisonment has on the inmate. The paper utilizes secondary data and it recommends, among other things, that the Nigerian correctional institutions should also subscribe to other community correctional measures such as probation and parole so as to reduce the trauma of solitary life of imprisonment. And that adequate provision should be made for proper placement and reintegration of discharged prisons inmates.Item Open Access Examination of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps in Combating Pipeline Vandalism in the Niger Delta Region, Nigeria.(Department of Sociology, Nasarawa State University, Keffi, 2021-01-17) Ishaya, Daniel Leku; Yahaya, Sabo Sarkin Noma; Zakari, AbdulkadirThis paper examines the rising cases of oil thefts, illegal bunkering and pipeline vandalism in Nigeria and the examination of Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps in curbing the menace. The study examines the causes of oil thefts, illegal bunkering and pipeline vandalism as well as the measures adopts by the Corps to combat crime and criminality in the region. The problems associate with the study are the persistence vandals in the Niger Delta region is due to the enthroned corruption by Nigerian elites, governments inappropriate policies, high level of youth unemployment, ineffective and corrupt law enforcement agencies and international crime collaborations. Literatures review and related materials were reviewed as well as theoretical school of thought. Secondary source of data collection was used for the study. The study revealed that government should make an effort to curb the problem bedeviling the region and to strengthen the NSCDC. The paper concludes and recommends that Niger delta need enough security architecture and collaborative effort of the community to regulate and management the illegal crime. There should be a synergy and ways to put an end to oil thefts, pipeline vandalism, illegal oil bunkering in order to make Nigeria economic robust and business destination by international bodies.Item Open Access EXAMINATION OF TRADITIONAL METHODS OF CRIME PREVENTION AND CONTROL STRATEGIES IN DOMA LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA, NASARAWA STATE-NIGERIA(Department of Sociology, Nasarawa State University Keffi, 2022-06-07) Yahaya, Sabo Sarkin NomaStrive by all societies for improvement in peaceful coexistence among people and the eventual development of its society is a moral obligation for policy-makers at all levels. This paper is an examination of the traditional methods of Crime prevention and control strategies in Doma Local Government Area of Nasarawa State-Nigeria. The social survey research design was adopted for this paper. Data were collected using quantitative and qualitative methods. 382 questionnaires were distributed and 356 retrieved from respondents from four selected electoral wards in Doma Local Government Area of Nasarawa State-Nigeria, through cluster and snowball sampling techniques. The technique used in the analysis of data for the paper was the quantitative data analyzed using univariate analysis for this study, content analysis for qualitative data and transcribed verbatim into English, together with observational notes. Data collected showed that traditional norms and values ensure crime prevention control through taboos and diseases. However, the majority of the respondents are not satisfied with the traditional strategy of crime control and prevention because it is a rudimentary and ancient method of crime control that has not evolved to contend with the current crime realities. The paper recommends that the government must enhance the cooperation and relationship between the traditional system, the vigilante groups, and the police in Doma Local Government Area of Nasarawa State-Nigeria. This cooperation can be realized through the legislative framework Also, the government and concerned stakeholders must continue to encourage and advocate for the improvement of vigilante group activities through increased funding and capacity development of its members since they are closer and accepted by their various communities. This will lead to crime prevention and control at the community-based level and indeed, the general society.Item Open Access Implication of Long Term Incarceration on the Inmates in Keffi Correctional Centre, State-Nigeria(Department of Sociology, Nasarawa State University Keffi, 2021-01-01) Yahaya, Sabo Sarkin NomaThe importance of criminal justice to the smooth running of any society cannot be over accentuated. Indeed an effective criminal justice system is regarded by many as fundamental to the maintenance of law and order. The paper examines the implication of long term incarceration on the inmates in Keffi Correctional Centre, Nasarawa State-Nigeria. The social survey research design was adopted for this paper. Data were collected using quantitative methods. 84 questionnaires were distributed among long term incarcerated inmates in Keffi Correctional Centre, Nasarawa State-Nigeria, through snowball sampling techniques. Data collected showed that the majority of the inmates in Keffi Correctional Centre were on long incarceration jail term and inmates in the Correctional centre were not classified according to the degree of offenses committed. The paper recommends that there is a need for a total overhaul of the criminal justice system where the police would do a proper investigation of cases with facts and evidence before sending a crime suspect to face on their part need the court for prosecution. The Judges to expedite the trial process to avoid people spending too much time awaiting trial and end up serving more than the sentenced time. The correctional centres their part should perform their constitutional functions effectively for proper rehabilitation and reformation for possible reintegration into the society. Also, the study results showed that inmates in Keffi correctional centre arc not being classified according to the gravity of on their crime.Item Unknown Implications of herdsmen and farmers conflict on food security in Doma local government area of Nasarawa State, Nigeria(Department of Sociology, Nasarawa State University Keffi, 2022-05-09) Yahaya, Sabo Sarkin NomaPeace is one of the preconditions for development to flourish in any nation of the world. This study examines the implications of the Herdsmen and Farmers conflict on food security in Doma Local Government of Nasarawa State, Nigeria. A social survey design was adopted. A survey of 381 respondents was drawn, using multistage sampling techniques involving electoral wards, towns/villages, main streets, houses, households, and individuals. Primary and secondary data were utilized in the study. Primary and secondary data were utilized in the study. The primary data were generated through the use of questionnaires and in-depth interviews. The questionnaires were analyzed quantitatively using tables; frequency, percentage, and in-depth interviews were transcribed verbatim. The results indicate that destruction of crops and trespasses on farms were the most causes of Herdsmen and Farmers conflict and has negatively impacted the area. It is based on this that the study recommends that grazing reserves should be properly gazetted and customary owners paid adequate compensation to avoid the taking over of land by force and States should be seen clearly and specifically make budgetary provisions for ranch development, International agencies should come to the aids of States and Federal Governments by partnering to facilitate the provision of amenities like fencing materials for farmland and ranches.Item Open Access Implications of Kidnapping for Ransom on Foreign Investment in Nigeria(Department of Sociology, Nasarawa State University Keffi, 2022-12-12) Mmahi, Okoro Paul; Udo, Chikezie Osisiogu; Yahaya, Sabo Sarkin NomaNigeria has the potential to give business owners and investors high returns on their investments. Other survivors whose houses have been burnt and part of their families killed have also been displaced with its unsavoury attendant consequences where poverty is the basic among others. So far the security agencies in the country such as the military, police e.t.c. have failed to secure the lives and properties of innocent Nigerians in the North-East in light of almost everyday occurrence of bombings and killings in the North. Whatever victory the security agencies claimed as reported in the newspapers is always neutralized by greater bombings, killings and destruction by dreaded Boko Haram sect, it is against the above background that this paper examine insecurity, insurgency and poverty in Northern Nigeria. The rate at which examination malpractice occur in the educational system is highly disturbing. This paper x-rayed law and Examination Malpractice in Nigeria. Data collected for this paper were predominantly through secondary sources such as journals, library materials, internet sources and books. The findings show that Examination Malpractice in Nigeria has become so internalized and legitimized among students and it is regarded as a normal process of passing examinations. This aim at individual or social group who come to adopt increasingly radical views in opposition to political, social or religious 'status quo. Radicalization occurs across multiple reinforcing pathways as a process to support terrorism and violent extremism and in some cases the Joint terrorist; groups to combat the risk of vulnerability trying to assimilate them into society. The; problems! of radicalization and radical ideology has become a major impediments and threats to national security challenges and a means of promoting political violence ideological and religious extremism. Most people were vulnerable to victims of restorative justice in the society as a result of decriminalization which is the removal of criminal status from certain behaviour or action and equally reclassification of law relating to certain acts of misconduct considered as a crime. The reformatory justice system is| applied retroactively reflects changing social moral views than an act is not harmful in decriminalized. De-radicalization, disarmament, restorative justice, reintegration are measures advancing to tackle the underlying problems, fueling terrorism! Therefore, the paper concludes and recommends measure that can be strengthened in the radicalization program for successful operations or performance involving procedure and methods of effectively in the restorative justice.Item Unknown REFORMATION OF JUVENILE OFFENDERS IN BORSTAL CORRECTIONAL CENTRE IN SOUTHERN KADUNA LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA, KADUNA STATE, NIGERIA(Department of Sociology, Nasarawa State University Keffi, 2021-03-03) Yahaya, Sabo Sarkin Noma; Ofeh, Gabriella Adamu; Faridah, Ladi ApakeThis study examined the reformation of juvenile offenders in a borstal training institution (BTI) in Southern Kaduna Local Government Area of Kaduna State, Nigeria. Cases in BTI were reviewed. The methods deployed to combat delinquency, and the effectiveness of the methods deployed in reforming inmates. The Social Control and the Reformative theories were adopted to explain the reformation of juvenile offenders in BTI. A survey design was adopted for the paper where two hundred and fifty-five respondents were drawn from a population offour hundred and sixty-one using a multistage sampling technique. One hundred and fifty-five Questionnaires were administered to inmates and 10 IDIs were also conducted to augment the quantitative data. The study found that pressure from friends and lack of parental guidance is the major factors accounting for delinquent behaviour. Also, results showed that methods deployed to combat juvenile delinquent cases in the BTI include, carpentry and tailoring. The reformative programmes they are majorly subjected to are educational and vocational skills. Further findings revealed that the methods deployed in reforming inmates in BTI are fairly effective. The study concludes that there is a relationship between the reformation method and the reduction in cases of juvenile delinquency. The routine activity theory was adopted to explain banditry in Niger State. Findings suggest that banditry is on the increase as attacks occur weekly and daily. The absence of police posts, offices of other security agencies and near absence of sufficient security personnel on constant patrol were responsible for lack of arrests and stoppage of banditiy in Niger State. The study recommends that government of Niger State should be more committed through the provision of superior forearms and ammunition to Nigerian Police and increase the number of Police Officers and their operatives deployed in the affected communities to combat the phenomenon successfu y.
