Item Open Access Civil Society, Mass Media and Democratic Governance in Nigeria(Department of Mass Communication, Nasarawa State University Keffi, 2020-01-07) Santas, Tsegyu; Suleiman, GarbaAbstract Civil society organisations (CSO's) and the mass media are critical institutions | in entrenching democratic governance in the society. They serve as the conscience of the nation as well as monitor the temperature of democracy in any given society. The study explores the activities of civil society organisations and the mass media in promoting democracy in Nigeria. Using library research method, the 'study found that civil society organisations and the mass media were instrumental in entrenching democracy in Nigeria. The study equally shows that these institutions are vital in influencing and providing policy directives to government on important national issues. The study reveals that CSO’s and the mass media are key players in exposing corruption among government officials and politicians. They were able to demand public accountability from those at the corridors of power; they as well fought obnoxious policies and programmes of government thereby consolidating Nigerian democracy. Despite these monumental efforts, the activities of CSO’s and the mass media are threatened by the government through the use of harassment, intimidation, and promulgation of anti-democratic bills to gag their activities. Tne study concludes by reiterating that the government should reconsider its posture in the way and manner it is treating these vital institutions that make democracy to thrive in any nation. This onerous task falls within the essential functions of media men to the society. During period of health epidemics, the populace largely depends on the media to furnish them with critical information about developing stories concerning health crisis. In truth, it is impossible for the journalist to cover the stories from self-quarantine. However, it has been observed in recent times that journalists are not being accorded the same, treatment or care given to medical personnel by the government. And this posture has posed huge challenge to the personal safety of media men in covering health epidemics in Africa. As major front liners in mitigating the spread of viruses in the society, their roles and responsibilities are often forgotten and as such led to the death of several journalists in the course of covering health epidemics. This study attempts to unravel the problem of journalist’s safety issues in the coverage of the coronavirus disease in Nigeria. Employing the library method of data collection, the study unravels the issues or problems and makes a case for journalists covering health epidemics to be adequately taken care of in their quest to furnish their audience with information. The study concludes that safety issues faced by journalists faced amid Covid-19 pandemic ranges from physical, social, psychological and more and had negative impact on the efforts make by journalists and media organizations in the fight against the disease. The study recommends that government and other stakeholders in society to regard journalists covering health disasters as essential workers like their counterparts in the medical profession and therefore make provision for their safety.Item Open Access Perception of Hate Speech on Social Media among Residents of Keffi and Lafia Local Government Areas of Nasaravva State(Department of Mass Communication, Nasarawa State University Keffi, 2020-06-06) Suleiman, Garba; Santas, Tsegyu; Abubakar, Mohammed BabaleThis study was carried out to examine social media and its effects on hate speech in Lafia and Keffi. Survey research design was used, while questionnaire was adopted as the instrument of data collection. Simple percentages and ANOVA statistics were used for data analysis and interpretation. Findings revealed that there was widespread hate speech in the social media space, most especially on Facebook, thereby spurring violence, ethnic and religious hatred, among other discords. The findings also revealed that social media platforms have significantly affected the extent of involvement of the folks in hate speech. Based on the findings of this study, it was concluded that social media platforms play a central role in the perpetuation of hate speeches through social media users. Hence, it was recommended that the users of social media must bear in mind the implications'of involvement in the perpetuation of hate speech and its accompanying repercussions.Item Open Access Reducing Youth Unemployment in Nigeria through Media Entrepreneurship(Department of Mass Communication, Nasarawa State University Keffi, 2020-01-06) Santas, Tsegyu; Francis, Akogwu; Ezeanoikwa, Andrea N.F.This study explores the option of media entrepreneurship as a viable means of empowering Nigerian youths for national development. The study employed the library research to execute the study, while development media and technological determinism theories served as the theoretical framework of the study. The study found out that youths are turning to media entrepreneurship for alternative job opportunities. These opportunities include photography, citizen journalism, screen writers, Disc joker, the internet, business centers and IT experts. Despite the opportunities that new media is providing for youth entrepreneurship, the problems of lack of capital, inadequate power supply, lack of ICT skills among several issues are the challenges facing youth entrepreneurs in Nigeria. Based on these challenges government and the private sectors must provide an enabling environment for young people to establish their own small businesses so as to be gainfully employed and thus reduce the unemplo3ment rate in the country.Item Open Access Social Media Infodemic and the Quest for National Cohesion and Security in Nigeria(Department of Mass Communication, Nasarawa State University Keffi, 2021-04-10) Santas, Tsegyu; Inobemhe, Kelvin; Salisu, Mohammed YakubuItem Open Access STUDENTS PERCEPTION OF THE USE OF FACEBOOK FOR POLITICAL ADVERTISING DURING THE 2015 GUBERNATORIAL ELECTION IN NIGER STATE(Department of Mass Communication, Nasarawa State University Keffi, 2017-06-06) Santas, TsegyuThe study was aimed at gauging student's perception of the use of Facebook for political advertising during the 2015 gubernatorial election in Niger State. Three research questions guided the study to ascertain the level of application of Facebook in political advertising by the political candidates during the elections. The study also sought to find out whether the electorate voting decision was influenced by political candidate's advertisement on Facebook. Survey research was adopted for the study while the questionnaire was used as the research instrument for the study. The Uses and gratifications theory provided the theoretical framework for the study. Findings from the study indicated that Facebook was utilized by political aspirants during the election. Respondent's perception of Facebook usage by the political candidates was very good. Further findings show that electorate voting decision was not influenced by their exposure to political advertising on Facebook. They respondents were rather influenced by religion, ethnicity and political party affiliations. The study, therefore, recommends that extensive political education should be carried out in future elections so that electorate should focus on the credibility and integrity of political candidates rather than religious and ethnic factors or affiliations.
