Item Open Access CORRUPTION IN THE PUBLIC SECTOR: A CASE STUDY OF LOCAL GOVERNMENT IN NIGERIA(Department of public Administration, Nasarawa state University, Keffi., 2006-04-12) James, A. Ojobo; Sam, Tende B.A.In order to achieve these objectives, various functions have been reserved for the local government councils which are duly enshrined in the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic. of Nigeria. This study is concerned with the high level of corruption in the local government The local government councils, however, continue to be assessed poorly by the general populace in the performance of their duties. A survey carried out in this study established as much in addition, the survey identified problems besetting the councils to range from the perceived structural defects of the local government councils to high operational cost and corruption. This study intend to find out the extent and causes of corruption in the local government and its impact on society with a view of proffering solutions that will wipe out or at least reduce corruption in the system to the barest minimum. The Nigerian local government is used as the focus of the study. Given this objective, primary and secondary data were employed in the collection of the data. It was established that poor conditions of service, lack of rapid promotion, poor recruitment and wrong placement, among others are responsible for corruption in the local government.Item Open Access THE EFFECTS OF SKILLS, CAPABILITY, KNOWLEDGE AND RESOURCES ON THE PERFORMANCE OF WOMEN ENTREPRENEURS(department od interpreneurship, nasarawa state university keffi, 2015-07-19) Sam, Tende B.A.; Tende, JeanneWomen represent a pool ofpotential entrepreneurs in various stages of development, with different demographic patterns and different labour force conditions. Women have decided to take the risks involved combining resources together in a unique way so as to take advantage of the opportunity identified in their immediate environment through production of goods and services. As a result of this notion that the study intends to investigates the effects of skills, capability, knowledge and resources on the performance of women entrepreneurs in Nigeria using Taraba State as our case study. The population of the study is made up the Women entrepreneurs in Micro and Small enterprises (MSEs) within Taraba State and due to none existent separate data base on women entrepreneurs in Micro and Small enterprises, the researcher employed an infinite population i.e. a population without a definite size and a population sample of 200 was adopted and questionnaires were administered to them of 160 were dully filled and returned. The questionnaires were subjected to correlation test, to ascertain the strength of the relationship among the variables and Analysis of Variance was conducted, in order to investigate the significance of the variables of interest and results indicate that skills of women entrepreneur does affect their productivity in Nigeria and knowledge of women entrepreneurs does affect their ability to attract a competent workforce. We then conclude that for women entrepreneurs in Nigeria to grow and positively affect the nation, they need to give rap attention to the development of their skills and knowledgeable women entrepreneurs have the ability to attract competent employees, and competent employees affect the growth and success of their business ventures, therefore it would be conclusive to say that for women entrepreneurs in Nigeria to attract and retain a good workforce, they need to be knowledgeable. We recommend that government should make available resources to women entrepreneurs especially those in the micro and small enterprises and women entrepreneurs should pay rapt attention in the development and growth oftheir skills.Item Open Access ENTREPRENEURIAL PROSPECTS AND CHALLENGES FOR RETIRED CIVIL SERVANTS IN KADUNA STATE(Department of Enterprenuership, Nasarawa State University, Keffi, 2012-02-11) Kassah, Virginia; Sam, Tende B.A.Many workers in developing countries treat lightly the absolute need to prepare for retirement active work. Some of the workers in public service are very attached to their work and they work devotedly to raise the profile of their institutions or organizations without considering the fact that one day they will be asked to vacate their posts or jobs. Whether a public sen>ant prepares for retirement or not, he/she must one day retired or be retired. And the need for alternative means of income for survival comes into focus. This paper adopts the survey method to assess the prospects and challenges of entrepreneurship among retired civil servants in Kaduna state. The papers uses primary data (structured questionnaires were administered and interview was conducted) and secondaiy data (use of textbooks, journals, online articles etc). The hypotheses generated were tested using the Chi-square at 5% level of significance. The major finding in this study is that there is a significant difference in the sunnval of retired civil serwints in Kaduna state who are involved in entrepreneurial activities compared to those who are not involved in entrepreneurship. The paper concludes by recommending that PEN COM (Pension Commission) in affiliation with Pension Fund Administrators (PFAs) should intensify their campaign on retirement and retirement life in order to prepared/provide prospective retirees/retirees with the basic knowledge each category require for a success retirement life after active service.Item Open Access Financing of Micro and Small Scale Enterprises and Poverty Reduction in Nigeria: An Empirical Investigation(Department of Accounting, Faculty Of Administration, Nasarawa State University, Keffi, 2011-07-15) Iyere, Samuel Iheonkhan; Sam, Tende B.A.The establishment of microfinance banks in Nigeria was to assist small and medium scale enterprises in Nigeria in raising their productive capacity and level of employment generation, thus alleviating poverty and enhancing human capital development. The objective of this paper therefore was to examine extent of the contribution of Microfinance Institutions (MFIs) to poverty alleviation and sustainable development. Data were collected from randomly selected sample size of sixty (6o) members and non-members of MFIs inTaraba State.The data was analyzed using frequency and regression analysis at 0 =0.05 aided with the use of SPSS statistical package. The results of the analysis revealed that shows microfinance Institutions (MFIs) has significant effect on poverty alleviation and sustainable development. The paper also established that micro-finance is indeed a strategy for poverty reduction. It was recommended that Microfinance can be more viable strategy for sustainable poverty alleviation if more is to be done on programme outreach and depth.Item Open Access Impact of risk management on the performance of deposit money banks in Nigeria(Department of Entrepreneurship Studies, Nasarawa State University, Keffi., 2016-06-15) Barde, Barnabas E.; Sam, Tende B.A.; Abbah, Edache Idoko James; Paul, VincentThis study examines the relationship between risk management and the performance of deposit money banks from the year 1997 to 2011. The data for performance are aggregate operational risk, market risk and credit risk were collected from the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC). Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and regression analysis. It was found that there exist a significant relationship between risk management and the performance of Deposit Money Banks. It was also found that fraud is in the increase in banks. Based on the finding of the study, it is recommended that Deposit Money Banks should engage more in an all-encompassing risk management practice, by so doing the operational risk, credit risk and market risk will all be given adequate attention. It is also recommended that the Central Bank and Deposit Money Banks should intensify the implementation of strong security and transaction monitoring systems to prevent successful attacks in the electronic payment platforms where frauds tend to be more prevalent.Item Open Access INFLUENCE OF PERSONAL QUALITIES OF CEOS ON FAMILY BUSINESS PERFORMANCE IN NIGERIA(Department of Entrepreneurship Studies, Nasarawa State University, Keffi., 2019-06-30) Paul, Vincent; Abubakar, Lamino Hauwa; Sam, Tende B.A.This study surveyed the influence of personal qualities of Chief Executive Officers (CEOs) on the performance of family businesses in Nigeria. This area of research is important given that researchers in the area of behavioural finance and in management argue that CEOs characteristics such as assumption of control, willingness of successors to manage the business, level of entrepreneurship knowledge, understanding of successor on the competitive nature of business and legal knowledge of the business influence the way business problems are perceived and the decision making process. The numerous and growing challenges which businesses face, particularly in the area of operations ,cost-cutting and production efficiency makes the need to examine how CEOs personal qualities could be beneficial for firm performance. The personal characteristics for 1,215 CEOs across all states of the Nigeria federation were examined out of which only 859 respondents provided the required information. The study adopts survey research and the regression result shows that CEOs personal qualities have significant influence on business performance. Hence, the study recommends that successors to family business should be made to undergo training prior to succession; to enable them have relevant business experience in the operation of such business and be prepared character wise before taking over the family business. More so, to develop good approach in attending to their customers, family members and stakeholders since the study shows that these qualities influence business performance.Item Open Access Magajiya System and Human Trafficking in Nigeria(Department of Political Science,faculty of social science, Nasarawa State University, Keffi., 2011-06-12) Umaru, Ibrahim; Lagi, Theophilus Daniel.; Sam, Tende B.A.; Njoku, Helen O.The Magajiya system is a special form of women trafficking widespread in Northern Nigeria, whereby the Magajiya (the restaurant and brothel matron) *recruits’ and tutors young women to provide menial and sexual services to the male patronizers for a fee. This practice is rampant in truck transit camps, specially designated local brothels, and gidajen kashe ahu ('resting/guest’ houses) in the region. Using the focus group discussion and indepth interview survey methods, this study examined the insidious nature of the ‘Yon Magajiya practice. It also investigated the dynamics of the system and the inherent social, economic and health implications of the phenomenon. Preliminary findings of the survey revealed that teenage women and their parents/guardians are lured into the business by promises of good life in the urban areas. A large percentage of these teenage women are run-aways from broken homes and failed marriages, especially forced marriages. The practice serves as reservoir, conduit and vehicle for the spread of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) and HIV/AIDS as well as visico vaginal fistula (WF) among the younger female victims.Item Open Access THE PLACE OF INFORMAL SECTOR IN POVERTY ALLEVIATION: THE NIGERIAN EXPERIENCE(Department of Business Administration, Nasarawa State University, Keffi., 2007-05-26) Sam, Tende B.A.Nigeria today has found itself in a state of laxolessness partly due to the high level of unemployment, which is has major problem in Nigeria. Successive governments have failed to create new jobs and to ensure job security. This paper suggests the strengthening of the informal sector as an alternative strategy towards job creation and hence alleviating the poverty situation in Nigeria. To move out of poverty; jobs must be created in micro, small and medium enterprises as a right step in attaining the desired reduction in the level of poverty.Item Open Access YOUTH UNEMPLOYMENT AND THE URBAN INFORMAL SECTOR: A CRITICAL ANALYSIS(Enterpreneurship Department, Nasarawa State University, Keffi, 2013-07-01) Sam, Tende B.A.; Barde, Barnabas E.This paper undertakes a critical analysis of youth unemployment and informal sector in Nigeria, as wel as its effects, causes and implications. Youths are very important stakeholder in any society. They are not only the future of Nigeria, but also a major stakeholder and useful resource in nation building. However, available data show that youth unemployment is very prevalent in Nigeria with far reaching implications for stability of the economy.
