Item Open Access ANTHROPOLOGICAL STUDIES AND ITS RELEVANCE IN CONTEMPORARY NIGERIA SOCIETY(Department of Sociology, Nasarawa State University, Keffi., 2011-01-12) Ogidi, Ambrose WoyengiemiAmong the social science disciplines in Nigeria anthropology seems to be the least recognized. The reason for this may not be unconnected with the role anthropologists played in consolidating colonial administration in Nigeria and other parts of Africa. This no doubt undermined the establishment and popularity of anthropology as an academic discipline in Nigeria from the period of independence. Besides, it equally created some form of bias by the Nigerian government and its citizens in appreciating the relevance and contributions of anthropology in the development of the nation. The paper examines the continued relevance of anthropology in Nigeria as it relates to economic development, protecting and preserving its cultural heritages, promoting national unity and integration, among others. The paper concludes by highlighting some of the challenges facing anthropological studies in Nigeria that includes; poor funding, absence of a professional body and lack of proper enlightenment of Nigerians on the importance of anthropology in modern society.Item Open Access An Appraisal of the Causes and Implications of Medical Tourism on Nigerian Societyand Economy(Department of Sociology, Nasarawa State University, Keffi., 2017-11-02) Ogidi, Ambrose WoyengiemiMedical tourism is a term used to describe the movement of persons from one country to another with the aim of assessing better and effective Medicare. The focus of this paper is to examine some of the contributory factors to the rise of the phenomenon of medical tourism among Nigerians in recent years. The paper identifies two broad perspectives responsible for this trend in Nigeria. They are micro causative and macro causative factors. The paper also identifies some of the implications of medical tourism in Nigeria; amongst these are the huge capital flight to many European and Asian countries and the adverse image it has brought to Nigeria. In fact, more than 80% of the populations in developing countries largely depend on herbal medicine Herbal medicine has its benefits but, it's not completely harmless.This explains reason the world Health Organization affirmed that most people living in Africa regularly use herbal medicine for the management an prevention of diseases. It is believed that some of the factors that contribute to the regular use of herbal medicine include cultural or religious belief, social status and educational exposure of the consumers. This study explored some of the factors associated with regular use of herbal medicine. The paper derived its theory on the health belief model. This study adopted the descriptive survey design where secondary data were used. The data were from existing literature from journals, internet sources, and newspaper and government gazettes. The study revealed that there is high rate of herbal consumption in the community which needs government intervention. The study also found that, some factors that contributes to the use of herbal medicines includes cultural practices, religion beliefs, publicity.through media, family and friends. The study recommends the need to educate and counsel people on the harmful effect of herbal medicine use by the health personnel and other appropriate available channels. There is also need to enforce existing regulation on the manufacturing, distribution, and sale of herbal products.Item Open Access Assessment of Women Utilization of Some Primary Healthcare Centres In Karu Local Government Area of Nasarawa State, Nigeria(Department of Sociology, Nasarawa State University, Keffi., 2022-03-22) Ogidi, Ambrose Woyengiemi; Bilyaminu, Suleiman MuhammedIn most developing countries of the world women regularly utilize healthcare services at the primary level. This is borne out of their biological nature and the roles they play. The paper seeks to assess women utilization of three selected primary healthcare centres located in Gidan-Zakara, Mararaba and Masaka, in Karu local government Area of Nasarawa State. The paper equally examines the state of healthcare facilities women in the three primary healthcare centre studied. The paper adopted descriptive survey for the research design. A sampled population of 276 women between 15 to 49 years was randomly selected from the three study locations. The study captured respondents in the lower and middle strata of the society. It was revealed that easy accessibility to healthcare centres, availability of drugs, were some of the factors for women regular utilization of primary healthcare services in the study locations. The paper recommends the need for government to construct more primary health centres in Karu Local Government. It also recommends that government should employ more qualified and experienced health personnel, so as to meet the growing number of women who regularly utilize primary healthcare centres in the study area.Item Open Access ASSESSMENT ON THE COMPLEMENTARY ADMINISTRATION OF HERBAL AND CONVENTIONAL MEDICINES IN JOS SOUTH LGA OF PLATEAU STATE, NIGERIA(Department of Sociology, Nasarawa State University, Keffi., 2021-04-16) Badung, Vivian Dalyop; Francis, Ojonugwa Onu; Ogidi, Ambrose WoyengiemiIn spite the development of more researched andformulated orthodox medicines, herbal medicines continue to be widely patronized by persons across the world with some patronages complementarily using both forms, oblivious of the harmful effects that may occur. Hence, this research assesses the complementary administration of herbal and conventional medicines in Jos South Local Government Area of Plateau State, Nigeria. A community based cross-sectional research design was adopted. Primary data were obtained using both quantitative and qualitative methods. In the survey, 375 questionnaires were distributed, of which 362 were retrieved, among the sample size using multi-stage sampling techniques of wards, settlements, households, and individuals. Also, qualitative data were collected using in-depth interview from community leaders, ward heads, and few people within the studied communities. Descriptive and inferential statistics of the data were carried out using Statistical Packages for Social Sciences (SPSS) Windows version 20.0. Results from the study shoM' that the rate of herbal consumption in Jos South is very high. It also showed that, most people consume herbal medicines to complement orthodox medicine for faster results when they are dissatisfied with orthodox mode of treatment. The study also reveal that complementary use of herbal and conventional drugs can lead to drugs-herbs interaction which can have negative effect on the body system. Thus, the study recommends health professionals to always enquire the use of herbal medicine from their patients in order to give adequate administration of drugs, and be able to monitor the kinds of herbs consumed by patients in order to avoid drugs interaction in the body. The paper highlight some prospects in the creative abilities of the Nigerian people. And notable of these include: identifying and tracing her pre-historic creative heritage, the international recognition of her rich traditional art, craft and literary works, among others. The paper equally identified the advent of Christianity, Colonialism, Western capitalism, introduction of Western technology' into the Nigerian society as the major challenges in Nigeria’s desire to develop creative heritage. It is on this premise this paper intends to examine climate change, global warming and emerging socio-economic consequences in Nigeria. In almost a century now natural events and human activities have contributing to increase in average global temperatures. Human activities are now exerting an unacceptable negative influence the ecosystem is finding it difficult to accommodate for too long. The paper gives an over view of the history of the scientific discoveiy of change, that began in the early 19th century when natural changes in paleoclimate was first suspected and the natural greenhouse effect first identified. The paper further examines the socio-economic consequences of climate change in Nigeria which is accompanied with global warming: these include reduction in agricultural production, reduction in Gross Domestic Product (GDP), unemployment amongst others. The study hard achieved specific objectives which hooked at the impact of community-based factor such factors could be explain as factor poverty, unemployment, ghetto area, poor educational background and lack 0f proper policies and programmes established by the government or any agency have triggered recidivism, the study to assessed the functionality and rehabilitative facilities in the effective programmes in Kuje correctional center. The study highlighted the causes of recidivism among inmates in Kuje Correctional Centre, to examine the inmates' perception of the basic infrastructural facilities in Kuje Correctional Centre. The study additionally, introduced social survey research design was adopted and questionnaire instrument of data collection was used, 200 questionnaires were administered to inmates in Kuje. correctional center, the questions were obtained and answers were provided through the assistance of research assistance which are the workers from the center, for easy interpretations. The study findings revealed that all the respondents were discovered to be male who are virtually single and within age bracket of 18-35 years. The study also discovered that all the available rehabilitative facilities and programmes are functional including educational programme, carpentry, welding, tailoring, games, guardian and counselling, among others. Die objectives of the study are to understand the undercover investigation role in combating crimes in the society, amidst the growing trend of cybercrime, fraud, banditry, kidnapping, and terrorism. This underscore the undercover security trends in the society. The principle of individualized suspicion and the presumption of innocence and also to violates the right to privacy of citizens. Similarly, spying on the people and carrying out cooperate espionage is important because this is the only way treason and felony can be checkmate, and national security of the country can be assured. The research design employed in the study was a descriptive survey. The study provides statistical data as empirical evidence and descriptive analysis for the study. The findings revealed that government should provide facilities for strong weapon to use against anybody. The study recommended that there should be legislation on privacy protection of the privacy of citizenry so as to maintain some level of trust between the government, security agencies and the society. There should be proper programmes in place that carries out background checks of undercover security agents, as well as psychiatric evaluation, so as ascertain their stability, state of mind, and loyalty to the laws of the state. In conclusion, adequate human capacity training for undercover security agents on how to carry out safe undercover investigation and effective operation to curb criminal elements in the society is germane among the security architecture.Item Open Access Cultural Construction of Childhood Diseases Among The Migili-Koro Ethnic Group of Nasarawa State, Nigeria(Department of Sociology, Nasarawa State University, Keffi., 2023-12-09) Ogidi, Ambrose WoyengiemiThe paper is an explorative description on cultural construction of childhood diseases among the Migili-Koro society of Nasarawa State. There are little or no empirically studies on the cultural construction of childhood diseases in Migili-Koro society. The paper is focuses on exploring the world view of parents in Migili-Koro society on their cultural knowledge about the causes of certain childhood diseases. It adopted Adebayo Lambo's Culture-bound Theory of diseases as Framework. Data were obtained through the qualitative approach that consisted of In-depth interview,' Key informant and Focus group discussions. The paper revealed that, cultural beliefs pervades the Migili-Koro society, and is still very strong in spite of modernization, advent of Western education and even Christianity. Empirical findings revealed that, traditional religious beliefs associated with the evil manipulation of malevolent forces, superstitious belief, the lack of moral conduct, especially on the part of mothers as it relates to marital infidelity, as well as evil intention of relations or neighbours in form of anger, envy, and jealousy were major underlying cultural construction in childhood diseases in Migili-Koro society.Item Open Access DEPLOYING FORENSIC ANTHROPOLOGY IN IDENTIFICATION AND RESOLUTION OF DEATH RELATED SITUATIONS IN NIGERIA(Department of Sociology, Nasarawa State University, Keffi., 2012-06-12) Ogidi, Ambrose WoyengiemiThe paper examines the contributions of forensic anthropology in contemporary human society. It also forecloses the justification for deploying forensic anthropology in the identification and resolution of death related situations in Nigeria. The justification for deploying forensic anthropology in verifying victims is linked with events of air and road disasters that sometimes result in severe burnt of victims; ritual killings where the exact identities of victims could not be ascertained due to fragmentary nature of corpses among other situations. The paper further revealed some challenges forensic anthropology may encounter in the course of doing their job in the country. It recommends, amongst others the need for government to accord special priority to forensic anthropology practice in Nigeria, with the training of forensic anthropologists especially in Western Universities. A major setback for developing and sustaining tourism in the state rests on the fact that successive governments have not been committed to diversifying the state economy (especially the tourism sector) due to over-reliance on revenue allocation from the federal government. This paper is couched on the premise that developing and sustaining the diverse natural and cultural resource bases in Nasarawa State for tourism will greatly accelerate employment and increase the socio-economic development of the state. The paper explores data from secondary sources, and adopts the content descriptive approach in the analysis of data. The paper highlights the diverse natural and cultural resource bases that abound across Nasarawa State; which include the famous Farm Ruwa Waterfalls in Wamba, Peperuwa Lake in Lafia, Hunki Ox-bow Lake in Awe, the Eggon Hills and Caves, Mada Hills and numerous cultural festivals across the state. The paper recommends that in order to attract both local and foreign tourists all year round, there is need to fully commercialize the natural and cultural resource bases in the state. In the context of the Coronavirus as a public health pandemic, this study examined the effects of the Coronavirus on urban family life in the Mararaba suburb, in Karu Local Government Area of Nasarawa State. The study was exploratoiy and adopted the ethnographic thematic approach in the analysis of findings. The study employed the Frustration-Aggression Theoty as a theoretical perspective. The Key Informant Interview guide the primary instalment used in the collection of data was from twenty-five family households selected through a multistage sampling technique. Findings revealed that the Covid-19 lockdown in the study area had farreaching negative effects on the well-being of many urban families. These were in the aspects of irregular daily/monthly incomes, reduction in daily food consumption, and frequency of incidents of family conflict/violence among others. The study suggests social safety nets strategies such as increased farming activities through provisions of subsidized farming inputs to improve food production. This is borne out of the changes that have occurred within the larger family network and the weakening kinship ties among members. The paper examines the expectations of the aced in their relation to other family members, with particular reference to their chil en contemporary Nigeria society. In Nigeria traditionally, children are expected to provide moral and financial support to aged parents; these are in the areas of regular financial assistance to aged parents, provision of medical and emotional support times of ill-health, and regular visit of children to parents among others. The paper however identifies , children are expected to give their aged parents in Nigeria society. In its earliest years of existence, it was effective and met the needs of the population. However, in the last three decades the quality and services in the country had deteriorated to the extent that Nigerians with complicated health problems are now compelled to travel outside the shores of the country for proper medication. The paper briefly assesses the evolution and structure of modern health care delivery in Nigeria and as well examines its importance on the wellbeing of the people. It also examines some of the challenges that have bedeviled modern health care delivery in the country. Significant of these challenges are poor funding of the health sector; dearth of qualified health professionals, inadequate health facilities, prevalence of corrupt practices within the health sector among others. It occurs mainly due to lack of adherence to stipulated building code, ineffective town planning laws as well as frequent use of sub-standard building materials by builders. The incidents of building collapse in different parts of urban centres in Nigeria have assumed a frightening dimension in the last few years. This is because the after-effects of it has always been gruesome and unfortunate both in loss of valuable properties and precious human lives. And this has become a common feature both in the print and electronic media. The paper is an attempt to assess the Nigerian housing sector and persistent problem of building collapse in urban centres in recent years. The paper therefore identifies some possible causes of building collapse in the country to include; inadequate building regulatory frame work, prevalence of corrupt practices among government officials saddled with the responsibility for approving building plans, the preponderance of quacks in the building industry as well as ignorance on the part of many prospective house-owners in the use of sub-standard building materials among others. The paper equally examines some of the consequences associated with building collapse in the country. These include; the untimely death of many persons and - # their families, the homelessness of many persons in different parts of the country; it has also rendered many people jobless as well as destroyed many businesses bwned fry people ampng others. The paper recommends the following measured that could help to minimize or eradicate the persistent problem of building collapse in the 'country. Keyword: Building, Collapse, Persistent, Consequences, Mance.Item Open Access I JAW TRADITIONAL MEDICINE AND ITS THERAPEUTIC VALUE AMONG SOME RESIDENTS OF LAGOS(Department of Sociology, Nasarawa State University, Keffi., 2011-06-10) Ogidi, Ambrose WoyengiemiThe purpose of this study is to ascertain the therapeutic value of Ijaw traditional medical practice among residents of some Lagos suburbs. The result of this study relying on (80) samples of respondents through questionnaire and in-depth interview methods revealed that besides the availability of modern medical services the traditional Ijaw medical practice is one of the means by which people overcome their health problems in Lagos. The study further revealed that Ijaw medical practice had effectively managed and cured such ailments as malaria, typhoid fever, sore-throat, hernia, pile, stroke, bone-fractures, child convulsion, and migraine. Result'from the study showed that ailments were cured by Ijaw medical practitioners who specialized in massage therapy, herbalism, (have knowledge in the use of medicinal herbs, roots, plants and other natural healing properties), traditional bonesetters and elderly Ijaw traditional midwives (TBAs). The study concludes that the Ijaw traditional medical practice may not be in the mainstream of healthcare delivery in Nigeria but its patronage by Lagos residents showed that it constitutes a major alternative solution in the Nigeria's over-stretch medical services.Item Open Access THE IMPACT OF HIV/AIDS PANDEMIC ON YOUNG PEOPLE IN NIGERIA(Department of Zoology, Nasarwa State University, Keffi., 2011-07-29) Ogidi, Ambrose WoyengiemiThe paper is an examination of the impact of HIV/AIDS pandemic on young people in Nigeria. The aim of this paper is to examine the commonest medium through which the HIV spread .It also looks at the different Socio-cultural factors that encouraged the spread of the virus in Nigeria and other Sub- Saharan African Countries. In addition, the paper discusses the impact that accompanies the HIV infection on young people, such as reduction in life expectancy increase in childheaded household, loss of traditional heritage and skills, depletion of the labour force that have adversely affected productivity in the economy, increase in poverty status of young people in Nigeria and other African Countries among others. The result of this paper reveals that the HIV pandemic is like a holocaust that have ravaged the lives of not just young people, but a large proportion of the population in Nigeria and other African Countries
