Item Open Access An Appraisal of Women Educational Development in Keffi Local Government Area(Department of Sociology, Nasarawa State University Keff ., 2017-02-08) Mamman, Mathew Samuel; Abdullahi, Bashir IdrisThe right to formal education for all has been an international goal for decades; hence early 1990s is remarked by women's high attendance in the education sector in Nigeria. Several conferences including, the 1994 International Conference on Population and Development, held in Cairo, and lhel995 fourth World Conference on Women in Beijing, placed women issues at the center of development efforts. This paper appraised women educational development in Keffi Local Government of Nasarawa State and examines the relationship between education and women development in Keffi Local Government Area. The study reviewed several literature and adopted conflict theory as theoretical framework. Based on the nature of the research, 400 questionnaires were distributed, 383 retrieved described and analyzed using Tables and simple percentage. The findings revealed that there is a relationship between education and women development as it indicate that development cannot take place without including women in education. The study further discovered that 50.1% of the total population of women in the study area participates in educational development. Furthermore, it was discovered that religion and culture are significant factor that impedes women educational development. Therefore, the paper recommends that Parents should give equal educational opportunity to children irrespective of their gender. This paper x-rays the determinant factors of modern family planning practices among women of reproductive age in a theoretical perspective. Data collected for this paper were mostly through secondary sources. Findings show that knowledge about modern planning, women's approval of the practice, perceived husband’s approval of contraception, and couples discussion about modern family planning are the proximate determinants of modern family planning practice among women of reproductive age. The paper concludes that traditions and misunderstanding are affecting the utilization of modern family planning thereby preventing women of reproductive age to make knowledgeable choices. Premised on these observations, the study recommends that there is a need to expand and intensify education on modern family planning programmes to adequately cater to women of reproductive age, and modern family planning providers should provide accurate, unbiased, and essential information about the various confraceptive methods. Findings show that educational background, Type and Verity oj Ailments/Diseases, affordability of the health care services, religious and cultural beliejs are the determinants of Health care seeking behaviour among the elderly persons in Nasarawa State, Nigeria. The paper conclude that healthcare seeking behaviour largely determined by the affordability of health providers, type and severity of the ailments/diseases, education background, age, gender, most important y the availability of healthcare services. The paper recommends that Policy formulation and implementation by government should be directed towards improving access to healthcare services. This can be done by increasing the number of health facilities in under-served areas, improved the quality of services in the existing ones, supportive supervision and other measures could be embarked upon in order improve quality and accessibility to health care services and Establishment of public health centers in the core rural areas by the government, Non-governmental organization, religious organizations, communities and spirited individuals would increase the proximity and accessibility of rural aged persons to health facilities.Item Open Access EXAMINATION OF THE FACTORS AFFECTING WOMEN OF CHILDBEARING AGE IN UTILIZING ANTENATAL CARE FACILITIES IN KEFFI LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA, NASARAWA STATE-NIGERIA.(Department of Sociology, Nasarawa State University Keff ., 2021-10-21) Mamman, Mathew Samuel; Akpake, Faridah Ladi; Magaji, Jummai MusaPregnancy and childbirth are natural and often eventful processes that may expose many women to the risk of developing complications during pregnancy and childbirth. Complications in pregnancy and childbirth are the leading causes of disability and death among women in the reproductive age (15- 49) years in developing countries. This paper is an examination of the factors affecting women of childbearing age in utilizing antenatal care facilities in Keffi Local Government Area, Nasarawa State- Nigeria. The utilization theory was adopted as the working theory to explain the factors affecting women of childbearing age in utilizing antenatal care facilities in Keffi Local Government Area, Nasarawa State-Nigeria. The survey design was employed as a research design for the paper. A systematic random sampling technique was used to draw the respondents from the population of the study. Questionnaires and in-depth interviews were employed to generate data. Findings have shown that there is the high level of awareness among women of the ANC health service provided and the financial status of the family is the major challenge confronting women of childbearing age in the utilization of Antenatal care facilities. Therefore, the study recommended that there are need for government to increase awareness on the need for pregnant to utilize the antenatal care service this will go a long way in increasing the attendance of antenatal care this can be achieved through continuous organizing seminars and radio jingles in the local language of the people. However, achieving this objective requires a motivated workforce through the instrumentality of an articulated incentive scheme. This study is conducted to examine how the provision of incentive schemes enhances the performance of health workers in Kogi State. The study which adopts a descriptive survey design reached a sample size of384 respondents out of the total population of9324 using the Rakesh 2013 sample size statistical formula. Again, the study reached respondents through a structured questionnaire designed using five points Likert scale while hypotheses were tested using multiple regression and t-test statistical analysis. The study revealed that there is a significant impact of the provision of monetary, non-monetary incentives and assurance of job security on the performance of health workers in Kogi State. Thus, the study recommends strengthening of mechanism towards the provision of these incentives to health workers as a way of enhancing their performance in Kogi State. Religion and Political Process are interconnected and intertwined. Religion is a belief in a reality beyond what is perceptible by the sense and the practices associated with the belief. The paper discusses the influence of religion on the sustainability of political process in Nasarawa State, Nigeria. The paper uses secondary data predominantly to explore how religion influenced the sustainability of political process in the area of peace building and harmony in Nasarawa State, Nigeria. The paper concludes that religion has been used and is still being used to achieve political interests which have resulted in stunted growth of the process and its sustainability; it has plausible impact on political process in Nigeria especially on the reorientation of the core values of religion in peace building, National coexistence, credible, free and fair elections. Therefore, the paper recommends that the practice of plurality of religion in Nigeria should be geared towards attaining the sustainability of the process. Thus, government should give more power to the National Religious Advisory Board and the Nigeria Inter-Religious Council in promoting inter-religious dialogue and religious tolerance through organized seminars and workshops for religious adherents to help in building and sustaining the political process.Item Open Access INTERNAL DISPLACEMENT AND HUMAN SECURITY IN KARSHI INTERNALLY DISPLACED PERSONS (IDPs) CAMP, KARU LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF NASARAWA STATE, NIGERIA(Department of Sociology, Nasarawa State University Keff ., 2021-02-05) Mamman, Mathew Samuel; Attah, Amana Philip; Orlaade, Abugul PhilipInternal displacement in Nigeria is a recurring and large-scale phenomenon and has affected most of the country’s 36 states. This paper examines internal displacement and Human security in Karshi Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) Camp, Karu Local Government Area of Nasarawa State, Nigeria. The social survey research design was adopted for this paper. Data were collected using quantitative methods. 493 questionnaires were distributed and 443 retrieved from internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Karshi internally displaced Persons (IDPs) Camp, through cluster and snowball sampling techniques. Technique used in the analysis of data for the paper was the quantitative data analyzed using bivariate analysis for this study. Data collected showed that there is a significant relationship between the causes of internal displacement and armed conflict as the main cause of internal displacement. The paper recommends that it is important for the government to secure the territorial sovereignty of the state and to disband any form of internal aggressions within the country’, other sectors of the economy are also important in safeguarding the existence of the people in the country hence the need to increase budget allocation in critical sectors of the economy. Through the increment of the budget allocation towards these sectors, these would enable easy access and affordability> of services by the citizens.Item Open Access Knowledge, Attitude and Practice of Antenatal Care Among Pregnant Women in General Hospital Garaku (Almakura), Kokona Local Government Area of Nasarawa State, Nigeria(Department of Sociology, Nasarawa State University Keff ., 2020-05-12) Mamman, Mathew Samuel; Attah, Amana PhilipAntenatal care (ANC) among pregnant women is an essential factor in reducing maternal and infant mortality. Most women in unindustrialized societies regrettably do not have access to such care. The paper analyzed the knowledge, attitude and practices of pregnant women towards antenatal care in General Hospital Garaku, Kokona Local Government Area of Nasarawa State, Nigeria. The social survey research design was adopted for this paper. Data were collected using qualitative and quantitative methods. 262 questionnaires were distributed among pregnant women between the ages of 15-49 years who registered for antenatal care between the periods of September 2019 to March, 2020 in General Hospital Garaku, Kokona Local Government Area of Nasarawa State, Nigeria through simple random sampling techniques and four health practitioners in the antenatal clinic were also interviewed, their responses were used to strengthen the responses gathered from the pregnant women. Data collected showed that majority of the respondents had knowledge on antenatal care and positive attitudes towards antenatal services. Most practices of the respondents are favourable. Notwithstanding, there are few respondents with little or no knowledge on antenatal care. It was discovered that some socioeconomic factors such as affordability, transportation, proximity to health facilities, family income hinder the utilization of antenatal care services by some respondents. A sample size of students was selected in addition to the use of interviews and a structured questionnaire. Though the incidences of examination malpractice in the university of study were few, this research revealed that examination malpractice by students can be attributed to the desire for academic success at all cost, crowded examination halls, lack of effective supervision and insufficient preparation among other factors. The study found that the major forms of examination malpractice include cooperation amongst students and sometimes lecturers during examinations, spying, use of foreign materials and impersonation. The outcome of ineffective examinations could result in poorly equipped graduates, discouragement of hard work and a reduction in die standard of education in general. It also undermines the credibility of the educational system. It could indoctrinate young people into the culture of dishonesty and fraudulent behaviour. It is suggested that educational institutions should endeavour to prosecute offenders; guidance and counseling sendees should be adequately provided in universities to support and encourage students with varied degrees of challenges; and efforts should be made to fund and equip universities with the necessary manpower and facilities for an enabling learning environment.Item Open Access NATURE OF HEALTH CARE SEEKING BEHAVIOUR AMONG THE ELDERLY/AGED IN KOKONA LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF NASARAWA STATE, NIGERIA(Department of Sociology, Nasarawa State University Keff ., 2019-12-17) Mamman, Mathew Samuel; Attah, Amana PhilipElderly persons, particularly the frail older adult, have been the most significant consumer of health resources. This paper examines the nature of health care seeking behaviour among Elderly persons in Kokona Local Government Area of Nasarawa State, Nigeria. A social survey design was adopted. A sample of 383 elderly persons aged 60 years and above vim drawn, using multi-stage sampling techniques including simple random, systematic sampling, clustered and purposive sampling techniques in the selection of electoral wards, towns/villages, main streets, houses, households and individuals. Prima/y and secondary data were utilized in the study. The primary data were generated through the use of questionnaires and in-depth interview. The questionnaires were analyzed quantitatively using descriptive statistics, such as frequency distribution, mean and percentage. The qualitative data were analyzed using content analysis. The results show that most of the elderly visit both orthodox and non-orthodox health care facilities. The paper recommends that there is need for Government, Non-governmental organizations, religious organizations and community/traditional leaders to create awareness on the negative/harmful effect of self-medication among the elderly persons. Also, Health care provision and advice should include education so as to increase awareness on good nutrition for the elderly, food supplements and adherence to good dietary regime.Item Open Access Pattern of Risky Sexual and Reproductive Behaviour among Adolescents in Keffi Local Government Area, Nasarawa State-Nigeria(Department of Sociology, Nasarawa State University Keff ., 2021-03-30) Mamman, Mathew Samuel; Gwom, Dung DeborahThe incidence of sexual intercourse is prevalent among adolescents. Adolescents engage in several risky sexual and reproductive behaviour like the early sexual debut, having mi 1 iple sexual partners, unwanted pregnancy and unsafe abortion. This is even though society frowns at this incidence as adolescents are expected to abstain from sex. Thus, the objective of this paper is to x-ray the pattern of risky sexual and reproductive behaviour in Keffi Local Government Area of Nasarawa State- Nigeria. A descriptive research design irai adopted. Primary data were obtained using both quantitative and qualitative methods. In the survey, 344 questionnaires were distributed among the sample size using multi-stage sampling techniques of Wards, settlements, households and individuals and six Focus Group Discussions were also conducted. Also, qualitative data was collected using Focus Group Discussion among adolescents. Descriptive and inferential statistics of the data were carried out using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) Windows version 25.0. Results revealed that most adolescents who have had sex started having sex between the ages of I0-I4years. In the same vein, most adolescents have two or more sexual partners hence the incidence of multiple sexual partners. Equally, it was discovered that these induced abortions are often conducted by roadside chemists and or the use ofself-administered pills. The use of some form ofprotection during sexual intercourse is low despite the knowledge of such methods by adolescents. Thus, it is recommended that there is a need for adequate sex education among adolescents to ensure that sexual practice is safe. Sexual education programmes will go a long way in ensuring that adolescents who engage in sexual intercourse protect themselves from risky sexual pract ices such as abortion, multiple partnering, early sexual debut and unplanned pregnancy. Government and major educational stakeholders should include sex education into school curriculums both in the late years of primary education and in secondaiy school.Item Open Access Reproductive Health and Infant Mortality in Karu Local Government Area of Nasarawa State, Nigeria(Department of Sociology, Nasarawa State University Keff ., 2019-12-23) Mamman, Mathew Samuel; Bilyaminu, Suleiman Muhammed; Abdullahi, Bashir IdrisReproductive health came to the fore against a background of increasing rates of infant mortality in Nigeria with its attendant reproductive health implications for the country. The paper examined the relationship between reproductive health and Infant Mortality in Karu Local Government Area of Nasarawa State, and effects of reproductive health on infant mortality, as well as, the effectiveness of reproductive Health services in combating Maternal and Infant Mortality in Karu Local Government Area of Nasarawa State. The study adopted Health Behavioural Model as the theoretical framework. Survey research design was adopted and questionnaires were administered to 100 respondents but 96 retrieved and analyzed using tables and simple percentage. The fmdings revealed that the available Health Care Services are ineffective in providing the needed reproductive health services. The paper recommended that reproductive health programmes should be intensified by the Government and relevant stakeholders should be encourage to - promote reproductive health education so as to prevent the common causes of infant mortality. Parents especially mothers should be educated and encourage to attend ante-natal and post natal checks in government clinics and maternities as this will reduce ignorance among them. This paper examines the socio-demographic characteristics of the Elderly and their health care seeking behaviour among Elderly persons in Kokona Local Government Area of Nasarawa State, Nigeria. A social survey design was adopted. A sample of 383 elderly persons aged 60 years and above was drawn, using multi-stage sampling techniques including simple random, systematic sampling, clustered and purposive sampling techniques in the selection of electoral wards, towns/villages, main streets, houses, households and individuals. Primary and secondary data were utilized in the study. The primary data were generated through the use of questionnaires. The questionnaires were analyzed quantitatively using logistic regression. The results show that marital status, religion, monthly income, living arrangement and number of children are the most significant socio-demographic characteristics affect the choice the types of medicine and health facilities. The paper recommends that policy formulation and implementation by government should be directed towards improving access to healthcare services. This can be done by increasing the number of health facilities in under-served areas, improved the quality of services in the existing ones, supportive supervision and other measures could be embarked upon in order improve quality and accessibility to health care services and there should be an increase availability of key services bv health administrators for the aged population which is a crucial approach to improve health care seeking behaviour among the old. Periodic orientation should be conducted by health administration for health care personnel on rudimentary principles of human relations to make better friendly services for the elderly who need special services
