Item Open Access Assessment Of Outdoor Radiation Levels And Radiological Health Hazards In Abzat Quarrying Site In Keffi, Nasarawa State.(Department Of Library And Information Science, Faculty Of Education, Nasarawa State University, Keffi., 2021-06-04) Idris, M.M.; Isah, S.H.; Iliya, M.M.; Wada, H.M.; Ma'aji, U.M.In this study, the assessement of the outdoor background radiation levels in Abzat quarrying sites in Keffi, Nasarawa State has been studied. The outdoor in-situ background exposure rate level for thirty (30) quarryng spots were done using a well calibrated portable halogen-quenched Geiger Muller (GM) detector (Inspector alert nuclear radiation monitor SN: 3544) at 1 m hieght above above ground level. The spots where the measurement were taken, a Global Positioning System (GPS) was used to record the geopoints. Radiological health hazards parameters and radiation effective doses to different body organs were evaluated using the measured exposure rates values. The values of radiological hazard paramaters obtained were compared with recommended permissible limits set by International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP) and United Nations Scientific Committee on the effect of Atomic Radiation (UNSCEAR) for hazard evaluation.. The mean values of the outdoor background exposure levels (0.0945 mRh'1), absorbed dose rates (822.44 nGylr1) and excess lifetime cancer risk (3.53.x 10**;) arc higher than the recommended safe limits of 0.013 mRh'1, 84.0 nGyh'1, 0.29xl0'3 respectively .as recommended by UNSCEAR and ICRP. The mean annual effective dose equivalent (1.00 mSvy'1) is within the recommended pennissible limits of 1.00 mSvy*1 for general public exposure and the effective doses to different body organs are all below the recommended limits of 1.0 mSvy'1. The background exposure level in Abzat quaring site is relatively safe with a potential of posing health risk on residence of the area in years to come due to doses accumulated.Item Open Access HEALTH IMPLICATION OF THE ACCUMULATION OF HEAVY METALS CONCENTRATION IN ARA AND LAMINGA WATER SOURCES OF NASARARAWA LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA IN NASARAWA STATE, NIGERIA(Department of Physics, Nasarawa State University Keffi, 2021-01-01) Rilwan, Usman; Kamal, A.M.; Mamman, A.; Idris, M.M.; Ubaidullah, A.; Okara, O.G.O.; Ugwa, E.I.Water is an essential component of life, fresh water constitutes about 3% of the total water on the earth, only 0.01% of this fresh water is available, with two thirds of the earth covered by water and the human body consisting of 75% of it, it is obvious that, water is one of the prime elements responsible for life. Present study aimed at assessing the heavy metals concentration in water sources across Ara and Laminga using Micro Plasma Atomic Emission Spectroscopy (MPAES). The result revealed that, heavy metals for Ara and Laminga in mg/L (Zn (0.35 and 0.2), Cd (0.00 and 0.00), Fe (0.05 and 0.05), Cu (0.02 and 0.01), Pd (0.04 and 0.02), Ni (0.012 and 0.012) and Mn (0.04 and 0.04)) respectively were present in the water. It can be concluded that the mean concentration is insignificant and the area is considered free and the water in those areas is considered as a good water, though, on accumulation, heavy metals may have much impact radiation burden of the populace, hence, gross alpha and beta as well as risk assessment of water in the area is recommended as the concentration may elevate and cause cancer to the populaceItem Open Access Health Risk Assessment of some Cosmetic Products sold in Keffi Markets, Nasarawa State Nigeria(Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Nasarawa State University Keffi, 2019-03-07) Idris, M.M.; Ibrahim, U.; M.D., Maryam; Yusuf, S.D.; Muhammad, Abdullahi UbanaThis study assesses the health risk associated with exposure to heavy metals in various brands of cosmetics sold in Nigeria market using the x-ray fluorescence spectroscopy Analyzer. Eight heavy metals were measured in thirty two cosmetics samples (ten talcum powder, ten pressed powder, six dental powder, four eye shadow, four eye liner, and two hair dye) commonly used in local market and super markets in keffi, Nasarawa state. The concentration of heavy metals such as Cd, Pd, Cr, Zn, Mn, Fe, Cu, Ni was determined. The Systemic exposure dose, Margin of safety, Hazard quotients and Hazardous indices were determined. Results shows that, the range of mean concentrations of metals in the cosmetics sample are Cd (0.216 -1.46 µg/g), Pd (53.628- 267.962 µg/g), Cr (18.571- 30.631 µg/g), Zn (10.443 -315.746 µg/g), Mn (77.693 - 256.319 µg/g), Fe (123.081 - 632.828 µg/g), Cu (9.285 - 36.126 µg/g), and Ni (8.603 – 48.887 µg/g). The hazard quotients were found to be greater than 1,which indicates the risk of carcinogenesis. The systemic exposure dosage (SED) values for these metals acquired from the personal care products were below the WHO limit of 100. The margin of safety values obtained were greater than 100, indicating that the concentrations of metals investigated in these facial cosmetics exert no risk associated with their occurrence in these products. The maximum value of oral cancer risk was detected in Hair dye and the minimum value in eye Liner. Conclusively heavy metal content within the studied cosmetic were ordered as Fe>Pb>Mn> Zn > Cr > Ni > Cu> Cd at all cosmetics. Eye linerhas the highest MOS values which indicate that there is little risk associated with the concentration of metals in eyeliner. HQ value was higher than 1 indicated that the overall risks in both exposure pathways are not within safe level. HI value washigher than 1.Item Open Access Indoor and Outdoor Background Radiation Levels and Radiological Hazard Assessment of Some Modern Houses in Keffi Metropolis, Nasarawa State, Nigeria(Department Of Library And Information Science, Faculty Of Education, Nasarawa State University, Keffi., 2021-06-02) Idris, M.M.; Isah, S.H.; Wada, H.M.In this study, the radiological hazard indices due to radiation exposure of some modern houses in Keffi, Nasarawa State were investigated. An in -situ measurements of the exposure level were made using Radex radiation meter model RD 1212. The radiological hazards indices evaluated were absorbed dose rate (ADR), outdoor annual effective dose rate and the excess cancer lifetime risk. The mean exposure obtained for the modern houses and its surroundings ranged betxveen 0.05 to 0.09 pSv/h and the corresponding calculated ADR ranged between 0.088 to 0.158mSv/yr, while the calculated outdoor AEDR is 6.13 x 10-5 to 1.10 x KNmSv/yr. The estimated excess lifetime cancer risk due to gamma radiation at the modem houses and its environment is ranged between 2.15 x 10-4 to 3.86 x 10-4. The results show that the modern houses and their sunoundings within Keffi metropolis of Nasarawa State cannot pose any risk as the annual effective dose rate is below the acceptable dose limit of lmSv/yr for the public and the excess lifetime cancer risk from the houses was below the 0.3mSv/yr. Tins indicates that the building materials that were used may not pose any significant radiation hazard to the people.
