Item Open Access MEASUREMENT OF AMBIENT BACKGROUND RADIATION IN SOME CONSTRUCTION SITES IN KEFFI(DEPARTMENT OF PHYSICS FACULTY OF NATURAL AND APPLIED SCIENCES NASARAWA STATE UNIVERSITY, KEFFI, 2014-08-02) Gabriel, Joseph IsiborRadiation is a type of dangerous and powerful energy that is produced by radioactive substance which can come from the soil or any other building materials. This work measured and analyzed the outdoor radiation levels of some selected uncompleted building in Keffi towm. The radiation meter used for the investigation inspector alert nuclear radiation Meter (Made by S.E international INC, USA) with a halogen quenched Geiger Muller detector. The radiation meter was used at sea level to measure three locations in each of the houses and readings were taken in count per minute (cpm). Ten (10) different reading were taken in each of the houses and the result shows that the mean radiation level of (lmSv/yr) in all the houses is in line with the (ImSv/annual) given by radiation protection international bodies for both occupational and public exposure. The results showed some variation, such as (1.12mSv/yrf 1.09mSv/yr and LOmSv/yr) in the background radiation level among the house, this is attributed to the type of materials used in building the houses. Cosmic radiation and radiation from building materials have minimum contribution to the background radiation of the area under study and the inhabitant of the area are free from radiation exposure
