Item Open Access CHALLENGES OF MANAGING EBOLA VIRUS DISEASE IN WEST AFRICA: REFLECTIONS ON THE WEAK HEALTH SYSTEM(Department of Sociology, Nasrawa State University, keffi., 2015-02-11) Adegboyega, KamorudeenThis paper examines the challenges of managing Ebola virus disease in West African countries, with emphasis on Guinea. Sierra Leone and Liberia. The paper argues that the outbreak of the scourge in the affected countries is a reflection of weak health care system. In the context of this paper, the ineffective health care system is seen as health care system that does not respond to emergencies, coupled with poor health care planning, breach of protocol, poor funding, and inadequate attention to control of infectious disease and shortages of qualified health personnel. The pressure on healthcare facilities in the endemic areas has further limited supportive care that can be provided to people in this emergency. The identified variables, among others created opportunities for the outbreak of the deadly disease in the affected countries. The author utilized secondary source with the review of relevant literature to advance the thrust of the paper. The paper concludes that the governments and all the concern stakeholders of the affected countries should put in place effective health care system, capable of curtailing the re occurrence and spread of the deadly disease such as Ebola.
