Item Open Access URBANIZATION PROCESS AND HOUSING PATTERN IN GWAGWALADA AREA COUNCIL FEDERAL CAPITAL TERRITORY(DEPARTMENT OF SOCIOLOGY, FACULTY OF SOCIAL SCIENCE, NASARAWA STATE UNIVERSITY KEFFI, 2016-05-20) Abdulrahman, YusufUrbanization is a rapidly growing phenomenon in Nigeria. All available evidence seems to indicate that the pace of urbanization is likely to continue to accelerate in the years ahead. In the urban centres in Nigeria and the Federal Capital Territory FCT (Abuja) in particular, the developing council areas such as Gwagwalada has been experiencing rapid urbanization due to immigration and natural increase. This research examined urbanization process and changing landscape pattern in Gwagwalada Area Council FCT Abuja. The study reviews the ecological theory otherwise known as concentric zone theory of urban growth propounded by Professor Burges to explain the process of urbanization and urban growth. The methodology adopted for this study is survey research design: Cluster or area sampling was used to select respondents from AngwanAzara, Kutunku and SDP Road all within Gwagwalada Area Council. The questionnaires methods were the instrument used for data collection. Frequency and simple percentages were used to analyze the data obtained from the respondents. The tables and percentages were further used to arrive at the major findings of the study. The analysis shows the responses of the respondents to the questions asked in relation to urbanization process and changing landscape pattern in Gwagwalada. The finding of this study is that, urbanization brings about congestion in the houses as a result of the high demand and cost of houses in the urban areas, especially to the low income groups particularly in the cities like Abuja due to mass influx of people for better standard of living and education. Consequently, bringing about other social problems in the city like poor transportation system, congestion and overcrowding. To check the problem the study recommends that, government should provide adequate infrastructural facilities and strict adherence to the maintenance culture by the authorities in charge of the resident. Also areas where social amenities such as water, road, electricity, housing, school, drainage and hospital were provided for them they should make it as part of their social obligation to protect and preserve such amenities from further destruction. As a Mechanism to reduce the influx of people from the rural to urban area, the study suggested and recommended that, government should put in place population-environmental policy, to check the wave of rural urban migration through planning for further development and expansion of the area to accommodate the growth of population.Incidence of land use pattern, population explosion, location of industries, establishment of school, parks, health facilities, power supply and other associated amenities that take great deals of available land the study recommended proper planning by the government and authority concerned.
