Item Open Access ANALYSIS OF THE IMPACT OF ROAD TRANSPORTATION ON NIGERIAN ECONOMIC GROWTH: 1985-2016(DEPARTMENT OF ECONOMICS FACULTY OF SOCIAL SCIENCES NASARAWA STATE UNIVERSITY, KEFFI, NIGERIA, 2019-10-11) Alaba, Emmanuel AdebayoThis study investigated the impact of road transportation on economic growth in Nigeria from 1985 to 2016. A multivariate regression model was adopted and ordinary least square estimation technique was used in estimating the regression model. Annual time series data were collected from the Central bank of Nigeria and the Nigerian Bureau of Statistics. The empirical findings from the study showed that road transportation had significant impact on economic growth in Nigeria during the period under review. The Granger causality test results showed unidirectional causality between real gross domestic product and government expenditure on road infrastructure. A unidirectional causality was also found between road transport sector output and gross fixed capital formation. However, the Granger causality test showed bidirectional causality between real gross domestic product and gross fixed capital formation. The estimated coefficients of road transport sector output and government expenditure on road infrastructure were statistically significant at 5% level of significance. Also, the Johansen test of Cointegration indicated a long run relationship between road transportation and economic growth in Nigeria. However, the level of government expenditure on road infrastructure had a negative impact on aggregate productivity in the Nigeria economy during the same period. The study therefore recommended among other things that budget allocation to road transport sector should be increased significantly. This is with a view to enhancing the quality of available road infrastructure and also create additional infrastructure in the road transport sector.
