Item Open Access EFFECTS OF RAINFALL VARIABILITY ON YAM YIELD IN KARU LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA, NASARAWA STATE, NIGERIA(DEPARTMENT OF GEOGRAPHY FACULTY OF ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCES, NASARAWA STATE UNIVERSITY, KEFFI, 2018-11-12) Abuya, SamsonClimate variability is one of the serious environmental challenges that has received a lot of public attention in most parts of the world due to its consequence on agricultural production and other sectors of national economy and general wellbeing. This study therefore sought to examine the effects of rainfall variability on yam yield in KARU Local Area of Nasarawa State, Nigeria. Rainfall, data were collected for a period of 20 years (1998-2017) from the Nigeria Meteorological Agency and Nasarawa Agricultural Development Programme (NADP), Lafia. The data were analyzed using correlation and time series analysis of the SPSS and the trend function of Microsoft Excel. The result of the study shows R2 = 0.061 in annual variation with an unreliable rainfall distribution over the investigated period (1998-2017), while there is an increase in yam yield of R=9E-06 variation with 2006 and 2010 having the highest yield of 21.69 and 21.56 respectively over the period under investigation. The study identified poor yield at a major negative effect of rainfall variability on yam yield though the yield was at increasing rate of R=9E-06. Rainfall has a nonsignificant positive effect it's, off was not significant on yam yield in the study area over the 20 years period. It was therefore, imperative to recommend that a proper sensitization and extension officers should be deployed to help farmers through routine visits, on variability in rainfall characteristics, use of other farm input and monitoring of yamclimate relationship in the area in other to achieve improved yam yield.
