Item Open Access An Appraisal of Women Educational Development in Keffi Local Government Area(Department of Sociology, Nasarawa State University Keff ., 2017-02-08) Mamman, Mathew Samuel; Abdullahi, Bashir IdrisThe right to formal education for all has been an international goal for decades; hence early 1990s is remarked by women's high attendance in the education sector in Nigeria. Several conferences including, the 1994 International Conference on Population and Development, held in Cairo, and lhel995 fourth World Conference on Women in Beijing, placed women issues at the center of development efforts. This paper appraised women educational development in Keffi Local Government of Nasarawa State and examines the relationship between education and women development in Keffi Local Government Area. The study reviewed several literature and adopted conflict theory as theoretical framework. Based on the nature of the research, 400 questionnaires were distributed, 383 retrieved described and analyzed using Tables and simple percentage. The findings revealed that there is a relationship between education and women development as it indicate that development cannot take place without including women in education. The study further discovered that 50.1% of the total population of women in the study area participates in educational development. Furthermore, it was discovered that religion and culture are significant factor that impedes women educational development. Therefore, the paper recommends that Parents should give equal educational opportunity to children irrespective of their gender. Thus, policy makers, government and stakeholders should encourage women education and identify ways through which women could be properly involved in the economic development of their country.Item Open Access CAUSES, FACTORS AND THE SOCIO-ECONOMIC IMPLICATIONS OF HUMAN x TRAFFICKING IN NIGERIA(Department of Sociology, Nasarawa State University Keffi, 2015-01-01) Usman, Alhaji Yusuf; Abdullahi, Bashir Idris; Yahaya, Sabo Sarkin NomaHuman trafficking is largely a form of slavery. The international awareness of the crime has over the years increased. Nigeria is a country of origin, transit and destination for human trafficking. This paper x-rayed the causal factors and socio-economic implications of human trafficking in Nigerian society as one of the most recent and widely spread social menace. The paper used secondary data and factors such as greed, poverty, among others were found to be the major predisposing factors in human trafficking in Nigeria. The phenomenon was discovered to have taken a modernized dimension, thus affecting the full development of human capital in the country. Die objectives of the study are to understand the undercover investigation role in combating crimes in the society, amidst the growing trend of cybercrime, fraud, banditry, kidnapping, and terrorism. This underscore the undercover security trends in the society. The principle of individualized suspicion and the presumption of innocence and also to violates the right to privacy of citizens. Similarly, spying on the people and carrying out cooperate espionage is important because this is the only way treason and felony can be checkmate, and national security of the country can be assured. The research design employed in the study was a descriptive survey. The study provides statistical data as empirical evidence and descriptive analysis for the study. The findings revealed that government should provide facilities for strong weapon to use against anybody. The study recommended that there should be legislation on privacy protection of the privacy of citizenry so as to maintain some level of trust between the government, security agencies and the society. There should be proper programmes in place that carries out background checks of undercover security agents, as well as psychiatric evaluation, so as ascertain their stability, state of mind, and loyalty to the laws of the state. In conclusion, adequate human capacity training for undercover security agents on how to carry out safe undercover investigation and effective operation to curb criminal elements in the society is germane among the security architecture.Item Open Access Effect of Work Ethics on Attitude to Work in Nasarawa State University, Keffi, Nigeria(Department of Sociology, Nasarawa State University Keffi., 2022-09-12) Bilyaminu, Suleiman Muhammed; Abdullahi, Bashir IdrisEffective work ethics in any organization requires the knowledge of the nature of ethical dilemmas that are peculiar to the organization. Within the university system, several ethical dilemmas exist which hinge on unethical benaviuor that could affect attitude to work among staff. This study examined the effect of work ethics and attitude to work in Nasarawa state university, Keffi. Survey design was employed and a population of 291 respondents were sampled and stratified into teaching and non-teaching staff. Data were collected using questionnaires and Key Informant Interview. Secondary data from Journals, books, conference reports and documents from the university were also reviewed. The data were analyzed using simple statistics with the aid of SPSS version 20 showing frequencies and percentages, while Correlation statistic was used to test relationships among variables. The KII responses transcribed and described. The study found that the ethical codes utilized in Nasarawa state university does not affect workers' attitude to work. Also found that the university ethical codes have very positive impact on the 'workers’ attitude to work. The study recommends ethical reorientation; whistle-blowing, quality assurance and Servicom and university wide anti-corruption campaigns for effective institutionalization of work ethics. List consequences for unethical behaviours and should be placed alongside rules at strategic places in the University. Also recommends that swift disciplinary action should be taken for unprofessional conducts and should not be accommodated and irrespective of who breaks the rules and regulations of the University.Item Open Access THE INFLUENCE OF RELIGION ON THE SUSTAINABILITY OF POLITICAL PROCESS IN NASARAWA STATE, NIGERIA(Department of Sociology, Nasarawa State University Keff ., 2019-11-22) Mamman, Mathew Samuel; Abdullahi, Bashir Idris; Bilyaminu, Sulaiman MuhammedReligion plays vital roles in Nigeria Political process and has taken a position of importance. Religion and Political Process are interconnected and intertwined. Religion is a belief in a reality beyond what is perceptible by the sense and the practices associated with the belief. The paper discusses the influence of religion on the sustainability of political process in Nasarawa State, Nigeria. The paper uses secondary data predominantly to explore how religion influenced the sustainability of political process in the area of peace building and harmony in Nasarawa State, Nigeria. The paper concludes that religion has been used and is still being used to achieve political interests which have resulted in stunted growth of the process and its sustainability; it has plausible impact on political process in Nigeria especially on the reorientation of the core values of religion in peace building, National coexistence, credible, free and fair elections. Therefore, the paper recommends that the practice of plurality of religion in Nigeria should be geared towards attaining the sustainability of the process. Sexual Harassment is an unsolicited and unwelcome sexual advance which could be verbal conduct such as sexually suggestive comment, while the non-verbal sexual harassment includes gestures or unwanted physical contact including leering looks, touching, pestering as well as the request for a date or sex. Such behaviour ultimately places the harassed at a disadvantage. The study also examines the nature and trend of Sexual Harassment as well as assessing the perpetration of Sexual Harassment as to who harasses who in Nasarawa State University, Keffi. The study reviewed several literature and adopted Socio-Cultural theory as theoretical framework. Based on the nature of the research, 378 questionnaires were distributed and analyzed using simple percentage. Findings reveal that female students in Nasarawa State University, Keffi experienced sexual harassment than the male which often affect them in pursing academic excellence. The study concludes that Sexual Harassment is a recurring phenomenon in Tertiary Institutions and has affected female students more than the male, in their attempt to access opportunities and facilities on campus. Thus, female students tend to bear the burden and the cost for sexual harassment However, the study recommends that there should be creation of awareness, public anti harassment campaigns and sensitization, to draw attention to the abuse of women's rights by such acts and also that the university should formulate appropriate policy and grievance procedures, with appropriate punishments listed for offendersItem Open Access Reproductive Health and Infant Mortality in Karu Local Government Area of Nasarawa State, Nigeria(Department of Sociology, Nasarawa State University Keff ., 2019-12-23) Mammam, Mathew Samuel; Abdullahi, Bashir Idris; Bilyaminu, Sulaiman MuhammedReproductive health came to the fore against a background of increasing rates of infant mortality in Nigeria with its attendant reproductive health implications for the country. The paper examined the relationship between reproductive health and Infant Mortality in Karu Local Government Area of Nasarawa State, and effects of reproductive health on infant mortality, as well as, the effectiveness of reproductive Health services in combating Maternal and Infant Mortality in Karu Local Government Area of Nasarawa State. The study adopted Health Behavioural Model as the theoretical framework. Survey research design was adopted and questionnaires were administered to 100 respondents but 96 retrieved and analyzed using tables and simple percentage. The fmdings revealed that the available Health Care Services are ineffective in providing the needed reproductive health services. The paper recommended that reproductive health programmes should be intensified by the Government and relevant stakeholders should be encourage to - promote reproductive health education so as to prevent the common causes of infant mortality. Parents especially mothers should be educated and encourage to attend ante-natal and post natal checks in government clinics and maternities as this will reduce ignorance among them. Suicide is death caused by injuring oneself with the intent to die. Suicide is the serious public health problem and the suicide rates increased 30% between 2000-2018, and declined in 2019 and 2020. Suicide refers to the act of taking one's own life (Shankar,2018). Suicide is an analysis of a phenomenon regarding as pathological, intended to throw light on the evil which threatens modern industrial societies. Suicide is an indication of disorganization of both individual and society. Every case of death resulting directly from a positive or negative death performed by the victim. In Nigeria, suicide is a conscious act and the person concerned is fully aware of its consequences. Most people shy away from discussing because of the stigma attached, cultural taboo and a general lack of understanding.Item Open Access TERRORISM IN NIGERIA: IMPLICATION FOR DEVELOPING SOCIAL AND POLITICAL LIFE OF YOUTH IN NORTH EAST(Department of Sociology, Nasarawa State University Keffi., 2016-11-12) Bilyaminu, Suleiman Muhammed; Abdullahi, Bashir IdrisSince 2009, Nigeria has been experiencing terrorism by Boko Haram group against its citizens particularly in the North Eastern States ofAdamawa, Bomo, Yobe and some parts ofBauchi State. The most affected group are the women, children and youth. Though the youth formed the armed vigilante group against Boko Haram terrorism, yet they are vulnerable and easy targets of Boko Haram recruiters. Their strong opinions and beliefs and lack of employment opportunities as a result of bad governance make them vulnerable to the religious movement. The article amines the Boko Haram terror and its implications on the social and political life of youth in north east Nigeria. It find out that young people are the terror agents and recruited based on their poverty and unemployment status, and lack of equal opportunities and tolerance. Their social and political development is backward due to bad governance by the democratic government in place which has not provided better targeted public services, accountability, caring for the youth and access to opportunities for growth and higher standard of living. It concludes that young people are part of social and political world having various dispositions through experience with several specific institutions including Boko Haram movement which may have impact on their behaviours regarding participation in politics towards violence. It recommends the promotion of civic tight awareness that will impact on the development of democratic attitudes and behaviours. Government should develop polity interventions that could enhance the youth feeling of belonging, employment and empowerment programme as well as de-radicali^ation and rehabilitation programme which include medical and psychological support and education to assist formal combatants with reintegration into social and political life.
