However, given the vantage position which the employer occupies as against the employee under the principles of freedom of contract, the fate and tenure of an employee in a contract of employment is left exclusively at the mercy of the employer. These unchecked powers to determine the contract of employment by the employer most times result in great injustice to the employee. This situation has led the International Labour Organisation to develop and adopt international standards in the termination of contract of employment as a means of regulating the hitherto unchecked powers of the employer.
