Abstract

The study investigated the relationship between anxiety disorder and students‟ academic achievement in mathematics among senior secondary schools in Nasarawa state. The study adopted co-relational survey research design. The population of the study comprised of all senior secondary schools (SS1) students totaling 4,520 in Nasarawa West senatorial zone of Nasarawa State, Nigeria. The sample size consisted of 361 students, randomly selected from two randomly selected secondary schools in each of the five local government area. Two instruments were used to collect data in this study. These are the self developed questionnaire tagged Anxiety Disorder Questionnaire (ADQ) and Mathematics Achievement Test (MAT). The findings from this study revealed that there is a significant relationship between anxiety disorder and students‟ academic performance in mathematics, there is a significant relationship between general anxiety disorder and students Mathematics Achievement, there is a significant relationship between social anxiety disorder and students Mathematics Achievement, there is a significant relationship between obsessive-compulsive anxiety disorder and students Mathematics achievement and there is a significant difference between male and female anxiety disorder and students Mathematics Achievement. The work therefore recommend that Teachers should employ different strategies that would reduce anxiety disorder toward students‟ academic achievement in mathematics students-centered and techniques such as frequent testing, assignments to reduce students test anxiety in mathematics test. Teachers should announce every test and give students enough time to prepare so as reduce generalized anxiety disorder both physically and mentally.
