Abstract

There are many harmful practices that are still prevalent in our societies today. One of such practices is the Female Genital Mutilation (FGM). FGM has is being condemned mostly by the West as inhuman and degrading treatment on the womenfolk. The practice is more rooted in custom and tradition than religion as it is practiced both by Muslims, Christians, Jews and atheists etc. When women/girls are mutilated they are prone to being attacked by series of infections and health hazards. These ranges from hemorrhage, HIV/AIDS, urinary retention due to excessive pain, and difficulty in delivery, among many. It can also hamper the sexual enjoyment of women/girls. This work examines the forms of FGM and its complications generally. It also analyzes the prevalent practices in the different regions of the country. Lastly the work examines the Islamic position on the issue of FGM.
