Abstract

This study examines the socio-demographic determinant of adjustment of prison inmates. Keffi Correctional Service Centre, Nasarawa State. The study adopted cross-sectional survey to elicit information from 125 inmates who were selected through the use of prison record; Participants consisted of 100 male and 25 females with age ranging from 18-65 years. With regards to the length of imprisonment, 47 on short term, 40 on long term and those on awaiting trial were 38 in number. The participants responded to the prisoner adjustment scale. د آ hypotheses were stated and tested. The study employed the use oft-test for independent sample and one-way Anova to analyze the data. The results showed that, there was no significant difference between male and female prison inmates in general (t (123) =1.61 P>.O5, social (t(123) = 1.59, P>.O5 and emotional adjustment (t(123) = 1.34, P>.O5 to the prison environment; and there was also no significant difference between short term, long term and awaiting tried inmates on prison adjustment (F (124) = 0.91, P>.O5) social (F (124) =2.05. P>.O5 and emotional adjustment (F( 124) = 0.25 P>.O5. In conclusion, this study reveals that, other variables other than the socio-demographic variables might account for adjustment of the inmates. Consequently, it was recommended, among others that, prison environment should be made more friendly and conducive for better adjustment of inmates.
