Abstract

This Paper examines issues and challenges of transport policy and development in Federal Capital Territory, Abuja. To achieve this, the decision making approach was adopted as a theoretical underpinning and secondary data was generated for the study. The investigation revealed that the transportation problems in Abuja are the rapid growth in population, particularly in the satellite towns, low standard of efficiency, reliability and safety>, poor enforcement of regulations, shortage of bus shelter and bus stops, poor maintenance culture, challenges are long waiting time, long queue of passengers’ at various bus stops, stampeding due to rush, loss of valuable items as a result ofstrugglingf or buses, lateness to work, loss of man hours., though on - street parking facilities are provided on many routes in Abuja especially in the neighbour hoods, lack of an integrated intermodal transport system for FCT as all movements in the territory' today are road- based for which the existing road infrastructure is unable to cope with, recommended among others that The FCT administration as a matter of urgency should mount pressure on the federal government to rehabilitate all damaged federal roads within the Satellite Towns such as: Gwagwalada, Nyanyan, Kubwa, Kuje, Kwali, Bwari and Suleja. Such areas should equally be provided with enough road signs and traffic lights in order to reduce the rate of accident in the highways.
