Nasarawa State was created in 1996, having Lafia as its capital but till date it remains a city wit/* slow socio-economic development. The government has employed various development strategies with the aim of attaining a developed status but to no avail. This has been so probably because little or no attention has been given to urban growth as a crucial factor in development process. It is against this background that the need for this research study arose purposely to find out the effects of rapid urban growth on socio-economic development of Lafia Municipal. In order to achieve these goals, the research adopts survey design and questionnaire was used as an instrument for the collection of data. Analysis was done using simple percentages method of data analysis. After careful analysis and interpretation of the data collected, it was found that rapid urban growth has both negative and positive effects on socio-economic development of Lafia Municipal. The urban population growth was discovered to be positively related to the rate of urbanization due to rural - urban migration, which affects access to quality education, employment, health care delivery and healthy environment. The study suggests slowing down population growth and development of human resources as major components of sustainable socio-economic development.en_US
