dc.description.abstract | Employment practices in the construction industry had changed dramatically in the past two or three decades from a stable and permanent employment towards flexible arrangements. The aim of the study was investigate flexible labour employment practices in the construction sector of Nigerian economy. This was achieved by examining the contextual factors and industry characteristics responsible for flexible labour employment practices in Nigeria. 25 construction firms registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) and operating in Kaduna and Abuja towns were considered. The population of the study was all construction firms employing up to 25 workers. Primary data was gathered through survey research technique. A total of300 questionnaires were administered to technical and skilled labour in different trade sections of each firm but 236 were returned, representing 72 percent which was considered useable. The responses of this study sample were analyzed using descriptive statistics and analysis of variance. Results obtained from the study shows that both contextual factors and industry characteristics determined flexible labour employment practice in construction sector of Nigeria economy. The study concluded that both contextual factors and industry characteristics significantly determined flexible labour employment practice in construction sector of Nigerian economy. The study recommended a tripartite collaborative initiative by the labour union, employer and government for collective bargaining. | en_US |
