This study examines the effects of vegetation exploitation on the environment in Nasarawa Local Government Area of 'Nasarawa State, Nigeria. In order to attain the objectives of this work, such instruments as questionnaire were used to obtain detailed information on the effects of vegetation exploitation on the environment. The research made, use ! of percentage, Chi square (xl statistics and the test of significance fixed at the level of 0.05. GIS was used to analyse the data collected on vegetation extent within the study area. Two hundred respondents were used for the study. The result showed that there was drastic vegetation reduction of about 2663.82km2 in the study area between 1972 and 2005. The various reasons discovered from the study that are responsible for vegetation exploitation range from’ industrial purposes through domestic energy, medicinal purposes, forest fires, rapid population growth, to lumbering. The study equally shows that land degradation, biodiversity loss, ozone layer depletion and desertification are consequences of vegetation exploitation on the environment. The study reveals the effects of the ozone layer depletion which leads to the concentration of "Green House Gases" (GHGs) .carbon dioxide (C0~ and methane (CH,J which results into climate change, prolonged drought, soil desiccation, land degradation, biota disaster, genetic malformation and other diseases such as skin disease, sight (eye) ’ problems and crop failure. The findings reveal that change in vegetation could result to biodiversity loss which leads to decline in fuel wood, timber availability, among others. The result from the hypotheses tested revealed that there is Significant relationship between vegetatiofi exploitation and environmental changes. This is because of the drastic reduction in the ve'getation cover as a result of the exploitation of vegetation on the environment, the consequences has started manifested on the environment in the study area.. The researcher concluded by recommending that there should be Increase in community participation in forest management and utilization, adoption of protection of forestry development strategies which include afforestation of eroded sites.en_US
