Abstract
There are so many cultural practices influenced by beliefs held by members of the society especially against women. These cultural practices among others are responsible for the physical and psychological underdevelopment of women. Such practices include among others, lack of education, early marriage, widowhood practices, spousal abuse, divorce practices, son preference and practices affecting health and reproductive health rights of women folks. The need to transform cultural beliefs that constitutes and perpetuate violence against women can never be over emphasized. Human rights organs and health professionals‟ worldwide struggle with how to address harmful practices. The write up will use empirical sources and available literatures bordering on the issues to underscore the repugnant nature of such practices and also to proffer solutions to the problems at hand. Islam as a complete way of life has provided solution to every problem facing its followers. Proper Islamic knowledge is the only panacea to these problems as education is the key to self realization and liberation. On this basis, this article examine the nature and the Islamic point of view on these harmful traditional practices that seldom have debilitating effects on the health and development of the female folks.
