Harmony, peace and security which are resources of precious and inestimable value that formerly prevailed in North Eastern Nigeria have become sustainably elusive since 2009, following emergence of Boko Haram terrorism and other associated violent crimes. Consequently, infrastructure have been destroyed, tourism and investors scared away, just as education among others have been truncated, thereby heightening the level of poverty that already existed there. Though, several scholars have ascribed this state of affairs of . factors such as climatic changes, religious cum tribal differences, this paper implicates rising poverty as the strongest factor responsible for promoting violence and lack of sustainable peace and security in North Eastern region of Nigeria. Basic human needs or human security theoiy was employed to guide the investigation, while data thereto were gotten from secondary' sources. Investigations reveal that rising level of poverty among many people in the region provided fertile ground for their easy manipulation to foment trouble therein. It was equally found out that conflict merchants and elites promoted the conflict so as to benefit therefrom. It is then recommended that various policies and programmes designed to alleviate poverty among the people and empower them be introduced by government. Aggressive sensitization of all stakeholders be undertaken to enable them know the dangers associated with conflict and violence.en_US
