Abstract

There has been a growing concern on the increase in the rate of drug abuse among young people in Keffi and that has led to increase in the prevalence of crime. This study examined drug abuse and crime prevention in Keffi Local Government Area of Nasarawa State, Nigeria. Sample survey design was adopted and the population of 36,874 was stratified based on the ten electoral wards. The sample size of 377 was determined using Krejcie & Morgan statistics. Simple random was used to select three wards out of the ten wards and systematic sampling was used to select the target population. A total of 377 questionnaires were administered to the respondents'. Data were analyzed using frequencies and percentages with the help of Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) Windows Version 25.0.Furthermore, findings revealed that drug abuse leads to prevalent and increase in crimes such as violent assault, armed robbery, murder, rape and domestic violence. The study recommends the need to encourage family education on drugs as a core function of social organization to reduce the rate of drug abuse among youths. Considering the nexus between drug abuse and crime, it is imperative for the government and other relevant authorities to establish a criminal justice drug programme which will be vested with the responsibility of detoxification, education, and vocational training of offenders.
